October 2009 edition

In view of the recently-inaugurated "Unity" government which has been established in Zimbabwe, it was particularly interesting to receive a report-back from a leading member of our movement who has just returned from a trip back to the country - the first such visit for six years.

By all accounts the situation in the country is still very dire - but there are considerable reasons for hope in the future. Most fundamentally the country's hyper-inflation has now ceased - but only because the Zimbabwe Dollar is now to all intents and purposes extinct. The US Dollar is now the main unit of exchange in Mashonaland, with evidently the South African Rand currently being the preferred currency in Matabeleland. How long this dichotomy can continue remains to be seen, but with the South African economy continuing to be very fragile the eventual dominance of the US Dollar seems inevitable. For a country not to have any control over its own currency - or in Zimbabwe's case not even having a currency to control - certainly seems to indicate the most failed of all failed states.

As a result of the acceptance of foreign currencies stores in the Harare (Salisbury) area are once again full however - full of goods that is, but not full of customers. Indeed there seems to be an absence of people everywhere, and this surely is one of the great untold stories by the international media, for it seems obvious that there has been a astronomical unreported death rate under the ZANU-PF regime, particularly during the past decade - from starvation, cholera and other diseases, and downright slaughter by "War Veteran" thugs.

The infrastructure of the country - once the jewel as well as the bread-basket of Africa during the days of Rhodesia - seems to have collapsed along with the currency. Few traffic lights (robots) work any longer in Harare (Salisbury), though somehow traffic miraculously always seems to sort itself out! Most street-lights are no longer working, and many water mains are severed with water gushing out into the streets - though precious little water seems to be flowing into ordinary homes. Pot-holes exist in roads everywhere (though to be fair, the situation in this respect is probably no worse than it was six years ago), and refuge lies uncollected by the sides of roads everywhere, as local councils are only slowly beginning to function once again.

But in spite of all this devastation there are still a few reasons for optimism. The Reps Theatre, for example, still survives and somehow manages to produce a consistently high standard of productions - though alas the collapse of society in general means that it struggles for support and patronage.

The task facing the MDC component in the "Unity" government is therefore massive. It is quite clear therefore that they will not be able to solve all the country's enormous problems on their own, certainly not with one hand tied behind their backs. By some means or another the MDC must try to forge an alliance with the more sensible younger ZANU-PF elements, and to lever out the ZANU-PF old guard. Once this happens then the nettle must be grasped and former Rhodesians welcomed back to the country. Of course history can never be repeated, and the Rhodesia of old is not about to be re-built, but the spirit of Rhodesia - where Black and White lived together in freedom and mutual respect - CAN be re-established, as long as there is enough goodwill on all sides.

As we've said before, symbols are of great importance in this respect, and to distance itself completely from the tyranny of Mugabe and his murderous ZANU-PF regime the ZANU-PF national flag, the Zanu-PF national anthem and even the very name "Zimbabwe" itself must follow the Zimbabwe Dollar into the dustbin of history. Once this comes about and all citizens of the country, Shona and Matabele, Whites and Coloureds, manage to live together once again in peace, harmony and prosperity, then that land between the Zambezi and the Limpopo CAN once again become both the bread-basket and the jewel of the African continent!

SPRINGBOK CLUB/ELC AUTUMN BRAAI

The Springbok Club held a most happy and successful autumn braai last month in the Walthamstow area of east London. For some time the organisation has been trying to find a good regular venue to stage such events in the inner London region, and at last we seem to have done so! Our special thanks are therefore extended to Bert Lintvelt for not only providing such an excellent venue, but also supplying such succulently rich boerewors which was enjoyed by all who attended! Special thanks are also owing to Robin Willow, who once again entertained everyone with some marvellous musical renditions!

Several good new contacts were made as a result of his braai, and it is anticipated that a similar such event will be held at the same venue in Spring of next year.

SPRINGBOK CLUB/ELC AUTUMN EVENT

The Springbok Club/ELC will be staging a most intriguing "Pirates of the London Docks" conducted tour on Saturday 24th October. The guide on this tour will be Dr. John Pope-de Locksley, an expert in the history of this 18th century era, when London served as a magnet for adventurers and pioneers, who were the trail-blazers for the more official British colonial expeditionaries of the following century. The provisional arrangements are to assemble at the main entrance to Tower Hill tube station at approximately 14.00 hrs, but please 'phone: 07711188430 for more definite details. FUTURE SPRINGBOK CLUB/ELC EVENTS

In November the Springbok Club/ELC will be staging their annual UDI Day buffet, at which it is anticipated that Mr. Mark Pilbeam of the RLI Regimental Association will be guest of honour.

In December the Springbok Club/ELC will be holding their annual Day of the Vow commemorations, at which a prominent British politician will be guest of honour.

The 2010 Springbok Club/ELC AGM will be held in January 2010. More precise details about all these activities will be detailed in future editions of the SCN.

SPRINGBOK CLUB/ELC BRANCH NEWS

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club/ELC is planning to hold an informal get-together during the next few months. Full details will be announced in a future edition of the SCN.

The London Branch of the Springbok Club/ELC is planning two events during the next few months. One will involve a trip to the RAF Museum in Hendon, and the other will comprise an informal talk by an expert in Anglo-Saxon archaeology. Again more precise details will be given in future editions of the SCN.

It is hoped to launch a Co.Durham Branch of the Springbok Club in the City of Durham towards the end of November. All members and supporters in Co.Durham will be informed of the precise details in due course, but if you are interested please 'phone: 07711188430.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

The Swinton Circle will shortly be holding a most interesting meeting featuring two important guest speakers, the details of which are as follows :-

[ Mr. McGough is a member of the Council and Management Committee of The Freedom Association (www.tfa.net) and represents that body with the Campaign for an Independent Britain (CIB). A graduate engineer and chartered accountant by profession, he is now retired and so able to devote most of his time to the work of The Freedom Association and the EuroSceptic cause in general. He was originally a member of Sir James Goldsmith's Referendum Party, but subsequently joined UKIP, and has stood as a candidate for that party in European, General, London Assembly, County and District elections.]

SEAL ALERT-SA MEDIA RELEASE

We have recently received the following Media Release from Francois Hugo of "Seal Alert-SA" :-

"It has been some time since my last update to you. I wish to thank you for all your support in various campaigns, petitions and funding. In a way to thank you, I have produced a DVD that details the life of the Cape fur seal as a species, along 3000km [1800 miles] of coastline, spanning two oceans and covers my rescue work and campaigns over the past ten years.

"Since my meeting with the Prime Minister of Namibia to attempt to persuade him to stop the seal culling in 2007, I have secured Namibia's two largest incoming tourist countries, the Netherlands and Germany to introduce a ban on Cape fur seal product imports, and later the whole of the EU. This resulted in not only Cape fur seals, but all 30 species of seals, including the 15 species hunted worldwide involving over 15 million seals, to be included in the EU Seal import ban. An achievement I am most proud of. In addition, I have expanded my existing private seal rescue facilities at Hout Bay harbour and this past season rescued over 60 baby seals pups which required the purchase of over 40 tons of fish to undertake their year long rehabilitation.

"On July 1, 2009 Namibia will become the largest seal hunt in the world, with the slaughter of 91,000 endangered and protected baby Cape fur seals (larger than Canada, who this past year killed 60,000 seals, even though the quota was 280,000 on a seal population - 5 times larger). 90% of Namibia's sealing quota will involve the clubbing to death of baby seals, all still suckling mother's milk.

"The pup sealing quota, does not take into effect the natural mortality of pups (unnatural predation by Jackals and from starvation), pegged by Namibia's own scientists at 44%, prior to the start of the sealing season. Therefore the sealing quota awarded to two sealing companies exceeds the number of seal pups left alive on seal colonies. Each year, Namibia exterminates the total pups born each year.

"Namibian Minister of Fisheries, Abraham Iyambo reply is, 'Namibia to Continue Culling Seals, Says EU Decision "Emotional"' on the 13 May 2009. Even though Namibia's own constitution prevents it from commercially culling wildlife, as by definition a seal cull, reduces a seal population, and its Animal Protection Act finds beating an animal to death a criminal offence.

"Namibia claims its motive for culling seals is based on the consumption of fish seals eat, yet 90% of the sealing quota is baby seal pup based, where the regulations require sealers only to club to death seal pups under one year old. These baby seals, all of which are too young to consume solids or eat fish, and who all vomit up mother's milk in shock when clubbed. In fact, all the fish eating seals of all other age groups are exempt from the clubbing. It is therefore illogical Namibia's claim it is culling seals to protect fish stocks, particularly as Namibia exports 99% of its commercial fisheries to Europe.

"The aim of the DVD is to educate and inform each potential tourist considering visiting Namibia, South Africa or Angola, to make an informed decision before visiting, about its protection of its natural living wildlife, and in particular Cape fur seals.

LATEST FALKLANDS NEWS

We recently received the following interesting report from a pro-Falkland Islands circulation list :-

"Clarin [an Argentine newspaper] has an article this morning reporting Councillor Mike Summers' remarks that Argentina is conducting an 'economic war' against the Falklands by its withdrawal of cooperation over fishing, its refusal to allow charter flights over Argentine airspace from Chile which harms the Falklands tourist industry, and by its opposition to Falklands oil development. Clarin quotes him as saying that Argentina and the Falklands 'do not have good relations'. Clarin states that Mike Summers' remarks were made on the occasion of the celebrations of the 27th anniversary of the Argentine defeat - or Liberation Day for the Islanders."

RHODESIAN LIGHT INFANTRY DVD

The Rhodesian Light Infantry Regimental Association in the UK (part of the world-wide RLI Regimental Association) has recently had a series of films on a single DVD created which tell the story of the Rhodesian Bush War, as seen through the eyes of the men who fought in it. This is a new set of films which are not in anyway related to those that have been around for a number of years, and the proceeds are to be used to maintain our Troopie statue, smuggled out of Zimbabwe, as well as the creation and maintenance of an RLI museum.

THE RE-BIRTH OF DAVID SCOBIE

Award-Winning Rhodesian/Zimbabwean singer, David Scobie, has unveiled his long-awaited website, http://www.davidscobie.org/

He made the announcement via his FaceBook profile recently. "The new web-site is finished and we hope to get some interest in the old music again," says David. The multi-media web-site features David's profile, discography, photos and singles released, among other great features.

Visitors to the site can preview and purchase his best selling 1981 album, "Cleaning Up!" for the first time in 28 years which features hit songs like Gypsey Girl, Taking The Easy Way Home, Maybe Life Don't Care and On The Phone. The CD is also available for download. Other albums will be available to preview and download in due course. These include: Reborn (1983), Photograph (1984) and David Scobie Special Edition (1989). These albums will be re-released on CD and downloads for 2009.

Brogue Music CDs are also available for purchase and download on the site. Brogue is David's new music group (of two people). Born in Dundee, Scotland, UK, David was exposed to traditional Scottish folk music from the age of six. His parents took him to his first live concert held in Dundee where popular folk Duo "The Corries" blew David away. In 1973 the Scobie family moved to Salisbury, Rhodesia. From the age of ten, under the instruction of a close musical family friend, David began learning rudimentary chords on a guitar his parents had bought him. In 1980 David, aged fifteen had a hit-single in Southern Africa called "Gypsey Girl". The single was released in October 1980 and it went to No.1 in Zimbabwe that November, staying there for the next four months. From 1983 to 2004 he endured a fruitful career in advertising jingles, producing and engineering. Over the years David repeatedly earned Zimbabwe Advertising Awards for his efforts. In 1998, he staged two musicals and two comedy theatre productions to full houses around the country.

David has teamed up with Brigitte Rodrigues producing Keltic music and call themselves Brogue, and they are now based near Edinburgh.

WORLD CUP WILLIES

The editorial of a recent edition of "Preparing South Africa for the World" (the official bulletin of "Project 2010", the South Africa 2010 World Cup organising committee) was very revealing. It read as follows :-

 

"With the eyes of the international community now firmly on South Africa for the Confederations Cup - a key curtain raiser for next year's World Cup - it was inevitable that the foreign media would be looking for any excuse to take a swipe at South Africa. And they didn't have to wait long. Sunday's impressive opening ceremony attracted a near capacity crowd at Ellis Park, but this was marred by Spain's opening fixture against New Zealand - a couple of hours later - which attracted about 20 000 spectators. That's less than half of the capacity at the gleaming new Royal Bafokeng Stadium. What was particularly disturbing is that Spain are ranked number one in the world (as evidenced by their 5-0 trouncing of the All Whites) and FIFA President Sepp Blatter said as much: 'The organising committee should have done more to sell tickets and to bring people to the stadium. They could have brought schoolchildren, for example.' The truth is that spectator apathy has long been a problem in South African soccer where top-of-the-table PSL matches attract a handful of supporters. Apart from derby giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, many of the country's top teams still battle to attract supporters. All too often, the finest footballers in the land are strutting their stuff in empty stadiums. One foreign scribe says there is a nonchalance about arriving on time at matches in South Africa 'and it's the kind of attitude that drives FIFA crazy'. The reality is South African fans (and non-fans) need to wake up and recognise the enormity of the Confederations Cup which showcases the champions of every continent. As City Press noted in an editorial this week, 'the time has come to show the world we are in the mood to host the World Cup. Let us be lovely: let us be soccer crazy.' After all, in less than a year, South Africa will be hosting the biggest party on the planet, with or without South Africans."

No.131 :  Mr. SHAUN LEIGHTON of Ulster.

Shaun Leighton first made contact with our movement shortly after we were forced to re-locate from South Africa. A keen and active Ulster Loyalist as well as a strong supporter of the South African cause, he was incarcerated in Long Kesh (for reasons which we never discovered nor enquired about) when he initially wrote to us. He was released as a result of the so-called Good Friday Agreement, but alas all communications from him ceased shortly thereafter. We would however be very keen to learn what became of him.

LITTLE CHILD

Sir,

Many supporters of both the Swinton Circle and the Springbok Club will remember Daniel Wilkinson, who appeared to be an affable and level-headed young man - indeed he was elevated to the Committee of the latter organisation (in retrospect, was there an error of judgement?).

He was of course on the circulation list of the Springbok Cyber Newsletter (a most informative and well-produced circular detailing past and forthcoming events), however he evidently took exception to a couple of lines in the February 2009 edition and has therefore asked to be unsubscribed!

This in our view is an intemperate and childish reaction, corroborated by Mrs. Patricia Lunn.

On a point of fact, we now have proof that Sam Swerling is a member of the BNP ("Searchlight" September 2009) and is therefore persona non grata and barred from Swinton Circle meetings under the constitution - personal grievance had no part in the request to Swerling to leave the meeting of 22nd July 2008 as intimated by Mr. Wilkinson.

ROGUES GALLERY

We have recently been forwarded a most interesting article from a publication called "Fascist Free Zone!" which was evidently published by an organisation called "Anti-Fascist Action". At first view it was a mystery why this article should have been sent to us, as it was published as long ago as 1986 - but then we noted that it concerned someone who has been trying to cause considerable problems for our movement over the past few years, the notorious Mr. Ian Anderson.

Anderson, of course, was a leading member of the now defunct "Conservative Democratic Alliance", an outfit which for no apparent reason vowed that they would "smash" both the Springbok Club and the Swinton Circle on their web-forum a few years ago. Further investigations into this Anderscum character, as revealed in earlier editions of he SCN, exposed the fact that he had actually been Chairman of the far-right National Front during the mid-1980s! Anderscum also started to attend meetings of the Swinton Circle a few years back, though he had never been a member and was only brought along by a sidekick-come-minder named Gary Gillingham, who was a member. Anderscum's performances at Swinton Circle meetings proved most worrying however, as he would ask antagonistic questions of guest speakers which were diametrically opposed to the patriotic principles of the organisation - and furthermore would bring along copies of his controversial privately-produced broadsheet "The Flag" (which had started off life as an official National Front publication!) to distribute at meetings without permission, which upset at least one good and long-standing Swinton Circle member who resigned in protest. As a result the Swinton Circle Committee agreed to delete Gillingham's details from the organisation's circulation list, and that neither he nor Anderscum would be allowed to attend meetings in future. In spite of this decision, however, both of them somehow mysteriously managed to hear about the Swinton Circle meeting of 22nd July 2008, and were two of the five uninvited and unwelcome gatecrashers at this meeting who caused trouble when asked to leave.

The "Fascist Free Zone!" article revealed that Anderscum was not merely Chairman of the National Front during the mid-1980s however, but was also involved with a faction within the party called "The National Front Support Group". And what was this "National Front Support Group" in support of? They evidently supported "unity" and "co-operation" between the National Front and the overtly neo-fascist British National Party (BNP)!

In view of this recent revelation the events of 22nd July 2008 perhaps fit more into place, for all of the other three uninvited gatecrashers at this problematic Swinton Circle meeting - Sam Swerling, Andrew Slade and Gregory Lauder-Frost (the latter never having been a Swinton Circle member, but a well-known neo-fascist sympathiser) - have been exposed as being members of the BNP in the leaked membership list of that organisation (and what a great service those who leaked this list have done for genuine patriotic movements such as our own!).

These connections also seem to give credibility to a rumour which we have heard from a media contact, namely that Anderscum is a leading secret power-behind-the-scenes within the BNP.

We have just learnt that the brother of Bryn Price (the Chairman of the Kent Branch of Rhodesians Worldwide) has been murdered in Johannesburg. At the present moment we do not know the precise details or circumstances, but our sincere condolences are extended to Bryn, Sandra and the rest of their family.
