April 2013 Edition.

SPRINGBOK CYBER NEWSLETTER

April 2013 edition

We have occasionally been criticized – by very few we happily add, though from some who should know better – for our attachment to the real South African flag. These critics state with almost robotic reaction that we should “forget the past” and “accept the current realities”. What these shallow people seem to fail to understand, however, is that the primary concern of our movement is not to hanker over the pre-ANC past, but rather to strive towards the post-ANC future.

The true South African national flag isn’t solely a symbol of the past, it is an eternal symbol of the South African nation in a way which the currently-accepted ANC party-flag can never possibly be. It is a flag of the past yes – but it is also a flag which lives in our hearts today, and a flag which historical dynamics will surely ensure will become the official national flag again in the future.

We have commented in the past about how former national flags which defeatists and “know-alls” previously claimed would never be seen again have been resurrected from apparent oblivion to become the officially recognized flags of their nations once again. The flag of Russia is surely the most obvious and inspirational example, but more recently we have seen the same phoenix-like re-adoptions of the true national flags of both Afghanistan and Libya.

More recently, moreover, we have received a most interesting news report regarding another flag very dear to our hearts which has seemingly been re-born in a somewhat surprising way – namely the real flag of Hong Kong. This news article, which appeared in the South China Morning Post during late January, read in part as follows :-

“The British Council has removed eye-catching train station advertisements bearing the UK flag and the slogan ‘This is GREAT Britain’ amid sensitivity over the growing use of the colonial flag as a symbol of opposition to the Hong Kong government. On FaceBook, one user wrote: ‘Yes! This is Hong Kong, here is Great Britain!’ Another wrote: ‘Great Britain built Great Hong Kong!’ and ‘UK has always seemed to mean less at home than to its own nationals and admirers abroad.’ In recent anti-government rallies, some protesters have waved colonial Hong Kong flags, which have a prominent image of the British flag.”

If the people of Hong Kong realize the importance of such symbols identifying with their infinitely better past then why shouldn’t the people of South Africa – with far closer ethnic links – do so also? We hope that the defeatists and “know-alls” who reject the real South African flag will take note of the positivism and defiance of the loyal Hong Kong people.

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS

The Springbok Club’s planned visit to the Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall at the end of last month unfortunately encountered an unexpected snag. Being planned for a bank holiday weekend it transpired that several pre-arranged parties of tourists were visiting the Rooms on the day of the planned Springbok Club trip, and as a result there were unacceptable queues for admission. It was then decided unanimously by all those present to visit the near-by famous Ship and Shovell hostelry, which is named after Admiral Cloudesley Shovell and which houses a replica of Admiral Shovell’s famous ship HMS Association, whereat Gary Vincent, who is an expert on naval history of this era, was able to give a fascinating informal talk about Admiral Shovell and his era. We apologise to any supporter who turned up late for the planned visit to the Cabinet War Rooms and was not able to join the party at the replacement location.

----------------------------

Because of the clash of dates with the Springbok Club’s Kent Branch’s planned visit to the Rochester Sweeps’ Festival (see “Springbok Club Branch News” section) it has been decided to postpone the organisation’s anticipated trip to Newmarket Races until the autumn.

In early summer the Springbok Club is planning a visit to a scenic garden in Surrey which has strong Rhodesian connections, and in September 2013 will be participating in the “Hoisting of the Flag Ceremony” in Norfolk.

------------------------------------------------------------------

SPRINGBOK CLUB BRANCH NEWS

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club will be organising another trip to the famous Rochester Sweeps’ Festival this year, either on Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th or Monday 6th May, to which all friends and supporters are heartily invited. Details of the exact date and rendezvous arrangements will be notified as soon as they have been finalised.

The London Branch of the Springbok Club is also hoping to organise an event towards the end of May, the precise details of which will included in next month’s SCN.

It is now anticipated that the Hampshire Branch of the Springbok Club will be holding a re-launch meeting during the middle of the year. Again further details will be given in next month’s SCN.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

The Swinton Circle’s March meeting, which was addressed by John Skeffington, the 14th Viscount Massereene & Ferrard, proved a great success. The sizable audience were treated to a highly informative and inspirational speech by Viscount Massereene & Ferrard in which he gave a chronological outline of British history from the Battle of Bosworth until the current day, emphasising how in times of previous national crises men (and women!) of ability, vision and destiny had always arisen to save the nation, and expressed hope that the same would happen today to rescue the nation from EU entanglement and the problems posed by unwanted immigration.

LATEST REPORTS FROM THE ZIMBABWE CONSERVATION TASK FORCE

We have recently received the following informative though worrying reports from the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (ZCTF) :-

“UPDATE ON ELEPHANTS EXPORTED TO CHINA

“Further to our December report on the 4 elephants exported to China, we have received an email from Animals Asia Foundation who claim to have a number of volunteers monitoring the progress of the elephants. They say that the 4 elephants arrived at the end of November 2012. Two went to Taiyuan Zoo, one of which has subsequently died. The other two reportedly went to Xinjiang Tianshan Safari Park. They sent us the photos below of the surviving elephant at Taiyuan Zoo. We are saddened and disgusted that these elephants have been removed from their mothers and the African bush to live alone in a cold unfriendly jail cell in a foreign country. We believe the temperature at the Xinjiang Tianshan Safari Park is less than 20 degrees Celsius below zero. It is highly unlikely the elephants will survive in the cold when they have been accustomed to temperatures of between 30 and 40 degrees.

“There are apparently still another 14 elephants waiting to be exported and we have to try and stop this from happening. Please help us by spreading the word about this cruel and disgusting practice.

“We have been told that a lady by the name of Candy has been involved in the exportation of the elephants. Her phone number is 27 826 768 968.

FOUR RHINOS KILLED BY POACHERS

“On New Years Day, 4 white rhino were killed by poachers on Thetford Estate in the Northern Mazowe District despite the fact that the estate is securely fenced and guarded. The dead rhino were 2 adult males, an adult female and a sub-adult male. Eight horns taken from the carcasses were recovered.”

"P.K. VAN DER BYL - AFRICAN STATESMAN" by Hannes Wessels

ISBN: 978-1-920143-49-7 / paperback / illustrated
Retail price: R250.00, Web-site price: R200.00 + postage

The narrative gives the reader an overview of the history of the White man in southern Africa with detailed emphasis on the Rhodesian story through the life and times of PK van der Byl, one of the major players in a political drama that ended in the accession to power of Robert Mugabe under the auspices of the British government. By his very nature PK was controversial and confrontational. This account is likely to give offence to some because it portrays him as bluntly as he was in real life. Much can be contested about PK van der Byl but few will dispute he was an extremely colourful character with a devilish sense of humour. This memoir covers his life with a full flourish while doing nothing to detract from the seriousness of the international political and military conflict in which he was engaged. The reader will glean new information on a highly controversial subject and emerge with a more sympathetic understanding of what PK van der Byl and his colleagues did and strove for. The human tragedy that has followed the removal from power of Ian Smith and his Rhodesian Front party will almost certainly force the reader to deal with some uncomfortable conclusions, of value to anyone sincere about grappling with the volatile and deeply troubling challenges that confront all Africans today.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

No.173:  Mr. BILL DUNNETT of Durban.

Bill Dunnett was an Orcadian by birth, and indeed participated in the famous Kirkwall Ba’ mass football events during his youth. He emigrated to South Africa during the 1970s however, and was the manager of the St.George’s Hotel in Durban (a popular venue for patriotic movement activists in the city) during the 1980s. An active member of the Royal Natal Yacht Club, he subsequently took over the running of the Club’s bar and dining facilities. He also had a very beautiful daughter whose name we believe was either Victoria or Veronica. It would be very interesting to learn where they both are now.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

MEXICO WAY

Sir,

I might suggest that all the Whites in troubled South Africa be airlifted to Mexico and cross the border illegally into the USA. Have these refugees learn a couple of words of Spanish and they will be part of our welfare state in no time.

Yours etc.,

Dennis McCabe, Weymouth, Massachusetts, USA

SINK STATE

Sir,

I predict that 2013 will be a year of turmoil in South Africa. The country is slipping steadily towards a deep ravine which it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to climb out of.

OBITUARY

BARONESS THATCHER OF KESTEVEN

It would be no exaggeration to state that Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, who sadly died earlier this month, was one of the best British leaders and one of the greatest global forces for good of all time.

Baroness Thatcher’s life story from her humble origins as a grocer’s daughter in Grantham to becoming the most respected leader in the world is well known, so there is therefore no need to details her biography once again. We would however like to remind everyone briefly of her most notable achievements, which brought freedom, opportunity and a better life to not only all in the United Kingdom, but also to so many around the world :-

  • Liberating our kith and kin in the Falkland Islands from enemy aggression
  • Together with President Reagan winning the Cold War and thereby destroying the evil Soviet empire and liberating all the peoples of Eastern Europe
  • Giving all Britons the right and opportunity to purchase their own homes
  • Freeing so many workers from the intimidation of Trade Union subversives
  • Deregulating the Stock Exchange and thereby giving all Britons the opportunity to benefit from the wealth and growth of the national economy
  • Being prepared to oppose terrorism of all varieties around the world in spite of personal risk – as demonstrated by the attempted Brighton Bomb assassination attempt by IRA vermin
  • Quietly but effectively reducing foreign immigration into the United Kingdom

To be sure she made some mistakes during her term in office, the most notable of course being the signing of both the Anglo-Irish Agreement and the Single European Act, and probably the most reprehensible of all the sell-out of Hong Kong. It should always be remembered in this regard, however, that she inherited a Conservative Party dominated by liberal “wets”, and in order to retain her leadership she therefore had to appoint a broad-based cabinet, where alas “wets” tended to dominate the Foreign Office. It should be remembered, furthermore, that she subsequently openly admitted her mistake in signing the Single European Act, and stated that the Anglo-Irish Agreement would be written across her heart as her greatest error.

For those in South Africa she will always of course be remembered as the one Western leader who was prepared openly to declare that the ANC was “just another terrorist organization”, and whereas other Western leaders may have opposed communist-inspired international sanctions against civilized South Africa in private, she was prepared to oppose them openly. She also once welcomed President P.W.Botha to her official country residence at Chequers. Although many in South Africa recognised that P.W.Botha was at heart a sell-out himself, it is important to remember in this context that this wasn’t the perceived impression in the West as a whole, as he was regarded as still representing the preservation of civilized rule. It wasn’t P.W.Botha the man who she welcomed therefore, but the President of a nation which was still part of the West. She also made a very interesting comment after P.W.Botha resigned. The received wisdom was that “Pik” Botha was the leftist candidate, Barend du Plessis was the centrist candidate, and F.W.de Klerk was the candidate most likely to preserve civilized rule – yet she clearly gave her support to Barend du Plessis. Did she know something which we didn’t?

Baroness Thatcher was of course never defeated politically – she was stabbed-in-the-back by her own cabinet of political pigmies. The overwhelming dominance which the Conservative Party enjoyed throughout the 1980s soon dissipated, and under John Major the number of foreign immigrants again increased. The result of course was Tony Blair’s New Labour landslide of 1997 – but here ironically was perhaps Baroness Thatcher’s greatest achievement, for in order to obtain power Blair had to reject so many of the Labour Party’s traditional socialist policies, and few can doubt that bad though the Blair/Brown years proved to be, they were nowhere near as disastrous for the British nation as the Wilson/Callaghan era.

On the wreath carried on Baroness Thatcher’s coffin there was a card from her twin children Sir Mark and Carol Thatcher which read simply “Beloved Mother – Always in our Hearts”. These were not only the sentiments of her biological children; they were the sentiments of a grateful country to the mother of their nation.
