January 2021 edition

As we predicted in last month’s SCN, Joe Biden has now been confirmed as the 46th President of the United States – in spite of the fact that there was substantial evidence of vote-rigging in at least six key states during last year’s Presidential Election..

The Leftist media both in the United States and around the world have predictably been asserting in almost parrot-like fashion that the allegations of vote-rigging have been “fake” and “unsubstantiated”, but this is clearly not the case. There have been thousands of affidavits sworn by those who witnessed the tampering of postal votes, the prevention of accredited observers from watching the counts and by those who were falsely told that they had already voted by post when they turned up to vote in person. More damningly, however, has been the role played by Dominion Voting Systems in the computerised tallying of votes in most of the key states. Although founded and based in Canada, DVS has several sinister foreign connections, including with both the Communist Chinese and the Venezuelan dictatorial regimes. Furthermore DVS machines have been shown to be easily programmable to switch vote numbers from one candidate to another.

All this is not proof that the 2020 Presidential Election was rigged of course, but it was sufficient evidence to require that all allegations were fully investigated before the final result was to be declared and ratified by the Electoral College. The knee-jerk reactions of most of the mainstream media in stating that all of these multitude allegations were “fake” and “unsubstantiated” without investigating all the claims in full must therefore be roundly condemned.

But attempts to rig US Presidential Elections in favour of Democratic Party candidates are not new. In 1960 LBJ was widely believed to have “fixed” the result in Texas in favour of his ticket with JFK, and a number of ballot boxes from Illinois containing votes mainly for Richard Nixon were found dumped in Lake Michigan after the election. The statements by President George W. Bush – a person who we had previously admired greatly – rejecting all the evidence that the 2020 Election was rigged were particularly unfortunate. He should remember that “Donkey Party” agents tried to steal Florida from him in 2000 and Ohio in 2004 – and probably actually succeeded in stealing Pennsylvania from him in 2000!

Viewed against such widescale – and seemingly well-founded – beliefs that the 2020 Election had been stolen from President Donald Trump, the physical protests of so many citizens in Washington DC on 6th January was therefore not only predictable, but was also to be respected, If the authorities and the “Fourth Estate” were not prepared to uphold the rule of law – in the US context this means the Constitution – then it is surely the duty of the people to act? To call those who participated in this active protest against what they honestly believed to be a fraudulent result as “insurrectonists” and “domestic terrorists”, as unfortunately has been the case with so many sections of the media and the Biden team, was not only inaccurate, it was also obscene.

We stated in last month’s edition of the SCN that the stage seemed set for a Second American Civil War. On 6th January 2021 this Second Civil War appears to have begun. The names of Ashli Babbit and those other brave American patriots who were killed whilst demanding that the election of their President should be fair and valid will live in glory for ever.

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS

Although all the Covid-1984 hysteria and “lockdown” lunacy prevented the Springbok Club from organising any Day of the Vow commemoration meeting for 2020, we know that a number of the organisation’s members staged small individual commemorations to mark this important day. Alas all the continuing reprehensible restrictions on our rights and freedoms will mean that the Springbok Club’s AGM will not be able to be held in January as usual in 2021, but it has been decided that all office-holders from 2020 will retain their positions until the 2021 AGM is able to be held.

PATRIOTIC FORUM NEWS

The Patriotic Forum has now made arrangements for a full-scale experimental Zoom meeting. This will be held on Friday 15th January 2021 between 12.00 noon and 13.00 hrs GMT (between 14.00 hrs and 15.00 hrs South African time). All Patriotic Forum members will be informed of the Zoom meeting address and password early this coming week, but if you would also like to become involved please inform the Patriotic Forum at: swinton@netcomuk.co.uk. Being an “experimental” meeting there will not be any special guest speaker, but it is hoped that an American supporter will be able to give information about what is currently happening in the US following last year’s disputed Presidential Election outcome.

REPORT FROM THE NETWORK FOR ANIMALS

We have recently received the following most heart-wrenching report from the Network for Animals organisation, which reads as follows :-

“Bela Bela in South Africa is an impoverished, forgotten community, rampant with crime, drugs and violence. Donkeys there are continuously mistreated, overworked and abused.

“People are so poor they overload donkey carts and use painful, makeshift harnesses that cause the donkeys terrible injuries. Many of the donkeys suffer from lameness, injured hooves, infected wounds and injuries caused by whips and beatings. They get no medical treatment and are worked until they drop.

“Covid has made poor people poorer and angry at the world. And some take it out on donkeys who can’t fight back. Donkeys are being tortured, maimed and left to die agonizing deaths. This is not an exaggeration - remember us telling you about a donkey who had its legs hacked off because it was too weak to pull a cart? Well, that’s the kind of thing we must deal with and that’s why your help is desperately needed to save these gentle and trusting creatures from a life of pain.

“Just the other day, our team was told about a cart that was being pulled by two exhausted and injured donkeys. When we arrived on the scene, we found two donkeys who could barely stand and had numerous injuries. We got there in the nick of time and moved them to safety. We named the pair Will and Grace.

“Township life in Bela Bela is tough and dangerous - human lives mean little, let alone the lives of animals. Most donkey owners don’t even know that animals feel pain and that they need love and care. To them, donkeys exist to serve just one purpose - transportation. They are loaded with cargo from firewood and coal, to household waste and water. They are forced to do more work than their small bodies can cope with.

“Many donkeys have never known a gentle hand or a warm place to lay their heads. With winter in full swing in South Africa, many of these donkeys won’t make it without our help. Through education and empowerment, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of these donkeys.

“We have set up a workshop in Bela Bela to manufacture safe harnesses for donkeys, and are working with a community leader, encouraging him to promote donkey welfare. We are slowly making progress. We vow not to give up.

SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR FARCE

We have commented in the past about the declining standard of the BBC’s annual “Sports Personality of the Year” programme over recent years, as it became the domain of “politically correct” pundits and sexually deviant commentators – but the 2020 event surely hit an all-time low.

To be sure, the cancellation of so many sporting events due to the Covid panic made the 2020 ceremony very difficult to produce – but this was no excuse for not even naming the most obvious candidate for the main “Sports Personality of the Year” award, Tao Geoghegan-Hart, on the short-list for the honour!

Two other awards were plainly ridiculous however. The “World Sports Star of the Year” went to a character named Khabib Nurmagomedov. Never heard of him? We’re not surprised! He’s a cage fighter, and cage fighting isn’t a sport, it’s a branch of the entertainment industry! Then there was the Helen Rollason Memorial Award, which is supposed to given to a sportsman or sportswoman who has displayed outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. Instead this year it was given to Captain Tom Moore, the well-meaning but extremely naïve centenarian military veteran who found fame by traipsing around his garden with a Zimmer-frame in order somehow to raise money for charity. Captain Moore’s actions may have been praiseworthy, but they were NOT sport!

All this of course is a long way from the “Sports Personality of the Year” awards when they were first presented in the 1950s. In those days the awards programme was hosted by that doyen of BBC sports presenters, Peter Dimmock, and the main award was for a British sportsman or sportswoman only, so no West Indian based in Monaco would even have been eligible. In those days the awards programme featured only three awards, all of them totally meaningful: The British Sports Personality of the Year, The British Team of the Year, and the Overseas Sports Personality of the Year. Peter Dimmock presented the ceremony with aplomb and total professionalism – but sickeningly after he retired he seemed to be “airbrushed out of history” by the BBC hierarchy, with regrettably no retrospective programme in his honour being produced after he died in 2015.

The Patriotic Forum has therefore decided to remember Peter Dimmock by initiating an annual set of sports awards to be named after him. There will only be three of these awards, the same three which were presented at the original BBC ceremonies, and for 2020 the winners were :-

British Sports Personality of the Year : Tao Geoghegan-Hart British Team of the Year : Exeter RFC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year : Mikaela Shiffrin

For 2020 these awards were arbitrarily selected by the Chairman of the Patriotic Forum, but in future years all members of the Patriotic Forum and readers of the SCN will be able to vote.

LETTER OF THANKS SENT TO PENNSYLVANIA JUDGE

One of our readers, Professor Jason Jellison, an American currently based in Thailand, has sent us a copy of a letter which he wrote to the Hon. Judge Patricia McCullough of the Pennsylvania Judicial Center [sic] congratulating her on refusing to support certification of the Pennsylvania vote in last year’s Presidential Election because of clear evidence of voting irregularities. Professor Jellison has given us permission to publish this letter which he wrote, which we publish below :-

“To The Honorable Judge Patricia McCullough & Honorable PN Judiciary Center:

“I have no way of knowing if this pleasant & humble message of thanks shall ever reach the Honorable Judge Patricia McCullough, but I wanted to thank both her and the Pennsylvania Judicial Center for taking a courageous step in preserving the sanctity of American elections. I can only imagine the pressure (and hatred) which you must be facing for taking a practical, reasonable and even-handed pause to allow time for reviewing our electoral processes in an era of irrational hatred.

“I fully confess that I am a Trump supporter and I fully confess that I have my biases. However, I have never before really been in the position where I suspected wide-spread fraud or a fundamentally unfair American Presidential election.

“Yet, tens of millions of Americans (including many whom I know that voted for Joe Biden) strongly suspect that this was not a proper election. We might be right, or we might be wrong, but it only makes sense to slow down certification for proper review in such a case like this. We cannot have Democracy unless people have faith in the voting process and our country has simply never seen so many questions or 'red flags' which have arisen after a close election.

“In the past, some of us might have wondered about Florida's hanging chads, or pro-Nixon ballots allegedly floating in Lake Michigan. However, those cases mainly involved only one state or area. In 2020, we are dealing with allegations which are fundamentally different. If they are true, and a false result leads to negation of the will of the people, then we will join our most ancient predecessors as a failure of democracy.

“Time is required for a proper investigation, but in a time when people are engaging in so much unpeaceful protest and blind hatred, I have little doubt that Judge McCullough had to find a lot of courage to do the right thing. As an American living abroad, I simply wanted to thank both her and your Judiciary Center. This was an act of great courage and integrity.

“Regardless of who serves as President, I do believe Judge McCullough and your center will go down as being on the moral, upstanding, and honorable side of history. For whatever it is worth, I commend you and thank you as a fellow countryman. It does not matter who wins; what matters is that people have confidence in all of our electoral processes.

“As a part-time foreign professor, I teach Law & Society to university Freshmen. I discovered my love for law late in life and probably will never see an American law school or formal practice. But, I have brought the love of law into many student hearts and what you did today has impressed many of my students- ...many of whom support Joe Biden, but seriously question this election's integrity and legality. On this side of the world, we can simply say that we question why some poll workers seem to have been given different levels of access and we also question electronic voting machines as they have been suspect in numerous non-American elections.

“I send my fondest prayers to all of you and, regardless of who wins this, Judge McCullough and the PN Judiciary Center did the right thing. You are heroes.

“Please forward my humble thanks to Her Honor, and I wish you all Godspeed.

“If I ever were to be judged in a court of law, I'd certainly hope that Judge McCullough was my judge because she is fair.

Sir,

The ultimate aim of the Democratic Party in the USA and the Labor Party in Australia is to set up a one-party socialist state. Bob Hawke (remember him, that philandering, lying drunkard who was such a good Labor man he destroyed the Pilots’ Federation, ended up a multi-millionaire, and as we have just learned covered up the rape of his own daughter for political purposes) once said "The Labor Party will one day become the natural party of Government". In other words, Australia would be a one-party socialist state. 90% of the American media was against Trump, so it was a wonder he got as many votes as he did. Kevin Rudd wants to get rid of the Murdoch media because they actively oppose the Labor Party and they were the only American media actively to support Trump. If it wasn't for Fox News and the Murdoch media we would be in the same position as the unfortunate citizens of Communist China and the old USSR being brainwashed with one political point of view, in Australia's case the one-sided coverage of Fairfax and the ABC.

There was some good info’ in the November Edition of the SCN. One-third of South Africa has no electric now. Townships refuse to pay-up billions of Rands .The dark ages have come to “Azania”, or one could say darkest Africa has returned as we said it would.

HEALTH CHECK

Sir,

Down here in Devon we have not been affected very much by Covid. In fact the numbers don’t seem to add up. One local large hospital in Torbay has in the last year had about 175 less deaths than the previous year and the registrar said locally they had registered about 300 less deaths. A large undertakers’ firm in Coventry who we know very well is having one of the quietest years ever, and last week we were at a large firm in London and they said they were not over busy. It would be good to get figures under the Freedom of Information Act from registrars of births and deaths to see how many additional deaths have actually occurred.

GETTING DARKER

Africa is not the Western world. All of the leaders cling to power, and if there is the faintest possibility that they will lose it they carry out a coup. I also think Ramaphosa's days are numbered. As in the Zuma case, nothing will happen to Ace Magashule; one delay after another will follow. He is also a big fan/follower of Zuma - and make no mistake, not only little Malema, but all the radicals (ANC and SACP) hate Whites. So, only God can help us in this ugly situation, but it does not mean that we must do nothing. Now with the defeat of Donald Trump (we know there was no justice) we can be sure no help will come from America. With Trump in power, there was hope. So tell your conservative followers to pray for us.

REACTING TO OVER-REACTIONS

Sir,

I am in no doubt that the virus exists and that it can be fatal to older and vulnerable people, but it is certainly nothing like the 1918 Spanish Flu or the Plague. What we have seen has been a massive over-reaction, with the government interfering instead of allowing people to make their own responsible decisions. The closure of churches in particular rankles with me. I see no logic in allowing church choirs to sing and not wear masks, but not allowing congregations to sing even with masks on.

Still, I take heart from the growing rebelliousness of Tory MPs, especially as it's no just the "usual suspects". Boris could force through an extension to the lockdown using Labour votes, but it would make him look very weak.

OBITUARY

CAROL EVESON

It was with great shock and extreme sadness that we learnt of the recent sudden death of Carol Eveson.

Carol was the wife of Dave Eveson, and actively assisted him with the running of History Society Gibraltar. Like Dave, she hailed from the Birmingham/Black Country area of Mid-Mercia, where Dave ran a very successful engineering company, before taking early retirement and moving to Gibraltar, where they both immediately became involved with several pro-Gibraltar organisations. As well as being a mainstay of History Society Gibraltar Carol was also a keen and active member of the Gibraltar Cat Welfare Society.

During trips made to Gibraltar by members of both the Springbok Club and the Patriotic Forum over recent years both Dave and Carol proved good friends and provided excellent knowledge and opportunities to explore the Rock. Carol particularly impressed with her winning smile and genuine friendship. She will be sorely missed. Our heartfelt sympathies are therefore extended to Dave and the rest of their family and fellow-members of History Society Gibraltar – and also, if they were to understand, to their cats.

At the time of writing there seems little chance of the US Electoral College declaring that President Donald Trump has been re-elected as US President – even though there was substantial evidence of vote rigging in several key states during last month’s presidential election.

This however is by no means the disaster that it may at first seem. Two facts are indisputable: firstly the United States is now almost exactly split down the middle, with one half of the electorate consisting almost exclusively of patriotic White Americans and the other mainly of uassimilatable immigrants and ultra-Leftists who hate their own country, and secondly so intense is this division that whichever side the courts declared had lost would be convinced that the presidency had been stolen from them, and would thus be very, very angry. In such a situation it is surely far better to be attacking than on the defensive!

We must also bear in mind another important fact. When Barrack Hussein Obama was elected president in 2008 the Leftist media and other branches of the establishment declared that this had been because the demographic composition of the United States had changed dramatically, and that as a result there would never again be a White president. Donald Trump’s victory in 2016 proved this to be wrong of course, and his de facto victory this year only confirmed this fact. The percentage of non-White residents in the United States has clearly been exaggerated wildly by the ultra-Leftist forces for their own nefarious reasons.

It is difficult to predict exactly how the anger of the masses of Trump supporters convinced that the election had been stolen from them will react, but it is bound to have profound implications. With Donald Trump having won more than half of the popular vote (after all the fake postal votes are discounted) the stage seems set for a Second American Civil War. We must just hope that it won’t prove as bloody as the First Civil War.

The Biden presidency will almost certainly prove to be a complete farce. He himself will be the oldest US President ever to take office, and his stumblings and loss of memory during the presidential debates show clearly that he is not a well man, and when the shady dealings of his son Hunter are also taken into account it seems highly unlikely that he will be able to last four years in office. After that Kamala Harris will undoubtedly prove way out of her depth, and so by 2024 the GOP will be set to resume power to restore order to a crumbling society.

Hopefully, after Donald Trump has shown the light and led the way, the GOP will select a “son of Trump” (or perhaps a “daughter of Trump”) as their candidate in 2024, who will possess both the vision and the will-power to take the drastic steps which will be needed to ensure that never again can an Obama or a Biden assume power. As the late, great John Jewell often said: “The days ahead will inspire us!”.

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS

Alas, the continuing “lockdown” situation in London has meant that the Springbok Club will not be able to organise its traditional Day of the Vow commemorations this year – not even in a limited form. Many Springbok Club members will however be remembering this important date in South African history in their own individual way, as it is hoped that all readers of the SCN will be able to do on 16th December. We are hopeful however that all the Covid-1984 paranoia and “lockdown” lunacy will be over in time for next year’s commemorations, as indeed it is hoped that regular Springbok Club events will be able to be resumed as soon as possible in 2021.

PATRIOTIC FORUM NEWS

The Patriotic Forum is still aiming to hold a series of Zoom meetings in place of “live” meetings whilst the “lockdown” restrictions are still in place. A brief experimental session was held earlier this month, and a larger-scale experiment is being planned for the near future, prior to actual on-line meetings taking place. The organisation recently came across a leaflet which was distributed by activists involved with both the Swinton Circle and New Britain (the component parts of the Patriotic Forum) during the early 1990s, which advocated the replacement of the bust of the terrorist leader Mandela on the London South Bank with a statue to John Chard VC – the hero of Rorke’s Drift. The Patriotic Forum hopes to revive this campaign, and to highlight the heroism of John Card VC next year by staging both a PowerPoint presentation about his life and career, and a return visit to the RE’s Museum in Gillingham.

Edition No.41 of The Imperial Patriot has now been completely written, and should be published before the end of the month. “And that’s a reality we’re getting closer and closer to. Sun bears are incredibly slow to reproduce. Mothers will care for each cub for many years before breeding again, so the species relies on its 25-year lifespan to keep numbers healthy.

“But bushmeat poachers are cutting those lifespans short at a terrifying rate. This isn’t for sustenance - they’re slaughtering these vital animals to feed a demand from social climbers and businessmen vying to gain bogus ‘status’ by eating exotic bushmeat.

“The fact that it’s contributing to their extinction seems - sickeningly - to be more of a motivation to consume them quickly than a turn-off. And it’s not just restricted to sun bears - pangolins, tigers and countless other species from the same habitats are being slaughtered to satisfy this barbaric social fad.

“Loggers are already carelessly cutting their home to pieces and we’re in a situation where we need every ounce of help to have a chance of saving their lives, yet this additional attack is utterly, utterly needless. It needs to end – soon - before the damage is tragically irreversible.

“So, through donations we’re changing behaviours - going directly to the source of the problem in the South-East Asian societies driving the gruesome demand. We’re using a consumer-focused strategy to make sure that anyone who eats a set of severed sun bear paws isn’t seen as a trendsetter, but as a social outcast. That way we can help end this brutal bushmeat trend, and keep these crucial little bears clambering around the wild in peace.”

SOCCER SUPPORTERS RESTORE HONOUR TO THE GAME

When the Association Football authorities in England and elsewhere in the Western World made the disgusting decision to debase themselves and their players by insisting that they perform the “taking of the knee” act of the American Marxist insurrectionists whilst still playing behind closed doors, one of our supporters observed that they would never try this in front of crowds as it would be met with booing and derision. The brave piece of initiative by Jake Hepple in hiring a light aircraft towing a banner reading “White Lives Matter – Burnley” over the Manchester City ground where Burnley were playing was the first sign that this prediction was correct, and now most encouragingly the booing of the “taking the knee” subservients at Millwall and Colchester United has shown this observation to be totally accurate! Already Millwall officials have ensured that this insulting act is discontinued by their players, and an increasing number of sportsmen and women have openly stated their refusal to kow-tow to the forces of darkness in this way. By their actions Jake Hepple and the Millwall and Colchester United supporters have restored some honour to the English game, and furthermore have shown that the up and coming generation possesses more decency and backbone than their parents’ generation ever demonstrated. We salute them all!

HILARIOUS HYSTERIA

Channel 4 recently broadcasted a programme with the unbelievable title of “Is Covid racist?”. Even by Channel 4’s “politically correct” standards this certainly took some beating! It was presented not by a professional broadcaster but by a Negress health worker – and it certainly showed, indeed the entire production seemed of an extremely amateurish standard. Still, it gave everyone a good laugh!

HONOUR RECENT HEROES

A reader has informed us about an apparent dispute which is taking place regarding where a magnificent statue to Margaret Thatcher – looking resplendent in her Baroness’s robes – should be situated. Some wish it to be erected in her home town of Grantham, whereas others believe it should be placed in the Houses of Parliament. To be sure Margaret Thatcher had her faults and made a number of mistakes during her term of office, but she undoubtedly proved a better Prime Minister than any of her five predecessors, and of any of her five successors for that matter, and as the first woman ever to hold Britain’s highest political office she clearly deserves honouring. Why not therefore commission a second identical statue, so that one can be placed in Grantham and another positioned in the Houses of Parliament? Furthermore we would advocate that statues are also commissioned for those two great contemporaries of hers who influenced her policies greatly – Sir Keith Joseph and Professor John Enoch Powell!

No.265 – Mr. JON MORRIS of South Africa, Tower Hamlets, Bournemouth and Wareham.

Jon Morris first made supportive contact with the Springbok Club shortly after the organisation was established during the early 1990s, and also proved to be a keen supporter of Dennis Delderfield’s New Britain organisation at the same time. Although British by birth, he had lived much of his early life in South Africa, though he had returned to the UK and settled in Tower Hamlets in the east end of London. Sadly a relationship with an east end lady turned sour, and he consequently moved to Bournemouth. He had previously worked as a bit-part actor, and it is believed that upon his move he took up acting as a full-time profession, and as a result started to move around frequently. He is known to have moved to Wareham in Dorset, but alas correspondence sent to his last known address there was returned as he had evidently moved on yet again. Jon Morris was an extremely friendly, talented and loyal person, and several former colleagues would very much like to re-make contact with him. “Old Anchorian” was not completely correct in his letter published in your October edition. Andy Cowie’s sister Margaret was not nicknamed “Let me entertain you” because she looked like Natalie Wood (although I do admit that there was a passing resemblance), but rather because of her performances of burlesque dance routines at youth club sessions. In short she was a total flirt who loved to tease every male she was in contact with. She had a penchant for older men however, and was once caught in a passionate embrace with a youth club leader some 30 years older than her! One public-spirited person tried to warn her parents about the dangers of her licentious behaviour by anonymous letter (believed to be the youth club leader’s wife), but alas instead of heeding these warnings all hell broke loose. Shortly after this one of her younger sisters did fall pregnant whilst only in her mid-teens. They should have listened to the warnings rather than causing a fuss!

SOL KERZNER: The Miniature Minotaur

Following the death of Sol Kerzner earlier this year, the following article written by the acclaimed journalist Jani Allan makes fascinating reading :-

RATHER as is the case of a banana-peel victim, a scuffle at a bus-stop or an altercation at a lighted window, the doings of Southern Sun Hotels’ chief, Sol Kerzner, make for compulsive viewing.

Whether he’s looking for a ”Mary Poppins” to mind his children, collecting the Pope’s autograph, marrying an ex-Miss World or planning a modest R25 million addition to Sun City, Sol pounds the headlines with the repetition – and delicacy - of a sledgehammer.

Who is this miniature minotaur with the college-boy grin, who opens up hotels the way other people open up boxes or winegums? If you be seeking a 40-minute interview with Sol, better you be unhampered by anything akin to sensitivity … and best you be blithely indifferent to the numerous interrogations and several brush-offs that will follow the request. The man, often running, frequently jumping, and seldom standing still, evidently finds personal interviews slightly less appealing than the bubonic plague. I am asked, albeit very politely, not to be late. I’d rather be late for the Last Judgement!

But when I DO get to see him, he is polite and helpful. If a little remote and … bored? He pumps an unsmiling ‘Hi, nice to see you!’ into my hands and then lights up the first six centimetres of the two-and-a-half metres of cigarettes that he will have smoked by the end of the day. A glance at our pocket-sized conquering hero reveals what the women’s blads are wont to call ‘a craggily good-looking face with piercing grey eyes’. Dress? If he has a relationship with a tailor it must be merely a nodding acquaintance. He once admitted to being mistaken for a maintenance man in his own Beverly Hills Hotel, where he used to wander around in a pair of short and old takkies. ‘I pretty much don’t care what the papers say about me’ he drawls in his Bez Valley-Bronx accent. Er … well, the interview must go on as they say in the business.

Was he an ambitious child? I ask him, by now my voice a panic-stricken soprano. A faint grin creases the sandblasted-sensual features. ‘Naah. When I was at school I wanted to be a motor mechanic. That was about the extent of my ambition. It was when I matriculated at Damelin College and my academic results started looking pretty good that I decided to do a CA at Wits.’

In 1953 his father bought the Minora Private Hotel in Durban so Sol moved down to Durbs to help out in the hotel.

At that stage the hotel industry was in the doldrums. There were few a la carte restaurants and no night-clubs to speak of. The only diversion, it seemed, to most hotel residents, being to watch the nocturnal antics of the dread Durban cockroaches. Even the mice, it was rumoured, wore overalls. The gap was as wide as the proverbial barn door – and the Kerzners took it. In 1958 Morris Kerzner (Sol Senior) bought the Palace Hotel (which was licensed) and thus it came to be that Sollie the K found himself playing the role of barman. He nightly served up black eyes with Bloody Mary’s to Runyonesque characters like Harry the Horse and Nick the Greek. ‘I got good bouncing experience there!’ he smiles wryly.

Soon afterwards, with what was to become his accustomed speed (something between that of a Lamborghini and a Lear Jet), he bought-the-Astra-Hotel-threw-in-accountancy-opened-the-Talk-of-the-Town-bought-the-site-of-the-old-Torquay-Hotel-and-built-the-Umgeni-Hotel. Meanwhile out lady’s talents were not going unobserved. South African Breweries made him an offer that he couldn’t refuse: ‘Come into partnership with us and put together a chain of hotels.’

The year was 1969. Southern Sun now has an impressive 28 hotels forming its Herculean five-star links. Sol’s currency is dedication, enthusiasm and commitment. This, coupled with an incisive mind ever at the ready with a fast judgement and decision, makes him the prime force behind the Southern African tourism industry. ‘Good tourism will follow good hotels – and what could be better for our country?’ he explains, briefly flashing (white) porcelains and (orange, white and blue) patriotism.

Perhaps the ultimate monument to Sol’s vision and drive is Sun City. Sobriquet’s include ‘Solcatraz’, ‘Sin City’, ‘Sol City’. ‘Sol’s Pilansberg Palace’, etc. The R30-million Phase One of the mammoth project was completed in 17 months, CF, his accustomed speed. The Sun Palace is people-impacted: by last December, far more than a million visitors had tugged the recalcitrant one-armed bandits, squeezed into the casino and gaped at the wall-to-wall flesh montage that is the lavishly-mounted Extravaganza stage-show. To promote this Sybarite City, Sol staged a R3-million world heavyweight title fight (for 86 000 local fans in the stadium, 3-million on SATV and 500-million on international TV links), between Gerrie Coetzee and John Tate in October 1979. And if you may be forgiven for thinking that THAT might be a hard act to follow, for Sun City’s first anniversary , he staged a second world-title fight at the resort (aimed at 500 million world TV viewers), between Gerrie Coetzee and Mike Weaver.

Nothing on this scale, with this level of success, has been done before anywhere in the world. ‘You take a chance’, Sol grins. ‘Calculate the odds, research the international market properly, establish the Southern Africans’ taste, style, appetite and enjoyment, aim at giving them a good time at the best quality that they can afford – then go for it!’ ‘So far it works. It is clear to even the most casual observer that to have achieved what he has, on a personal, commercial, political and international level requires something more than the mentality of a merry innkeeper with a view to making a quick buck. If Sol has one major point of ego, it’s in the measure of his own concepts. If you say nothing else to him about Sun City, tell him it is unique.

The Americans, in the equivalent resort-chains of Las Vegas and Atlantic City say it. Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, George Benson, Jack Jones, Leo Sayer, Gloria Gaynor, Mike Weaver, John Tate, Telly Savalas, Lee Trevino and Gary Player, to name just a few, have said so. Sol, who is most at ease in the US-styled computer-talk developed from NASA, Kissinger and latterly Alexander Haig, would say: ‘In a highly competitive international marketing situation, estimating the viability of a tourism game-plan operation against Vegas and Noo Jersey, you shape your back-up from the leaders of the world’s entertainment, sport, convention and holiday-making bases. Which, roughly translated. means that whatever the giants of the hotel industry are doing in Vegas and New Jersey, Sol will do better.

‘Maybe I’m too much of a perfectionist!’ he concedes, finally, drawing deeply on a cigarette.

A man who works 18-odd hours a day, he doesn’t consider his work any less fun than a game of mega-Monopoly. ‘I make a good point of enjoying each day,’ he says, ‘and I certainly believe that you get out of life just as much as you put into it!’

Another simple, but severely applied principle, is ruthless honesty – at all times and at all costs.

‘Life’s too short to worry about anything being exposed’, he frowns. ‘I’m not afraid of growing old. I’m not sure that I’ll ever be an old man. Maybe in the chronological sense – but that’s all.’ His is a household name, along with those of his showbiz buddies: Joanna Lumley, William Smith, Peter Falk, Sean Connery – you name them, he knows them, wines and dines them, brunches and lunches them. But he will sharply point out that he is not a member of the ‘jet set’ or even the ‘Peacock set’.

‘I love people, I love my friends, but most people would be surprised to know that I stay home five nights a week with Anneline and the kids.’

Where to now, Sol, after zooming to the throne-room (bed-and-breakfast included) at the top of the international high-rise? No doubt the explosive dynamism that keeps the Southern Sol constantly in orbit around the globe will continue to generate the audacious and innovative ideas that spring from the mind of this – yes, he deserves to be called it – unique man. A man with his stubby million-rand finger perennially prodding the public’s pulse, his eyes constantly roving the horizons of the future, Kerzner has the power of a Prometheus unbound.

Although the international media would have everyone believe that Joe Biden has definitely been elected as the next President of the United States, and that President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede defeat is nonsensical, reports which we have been receiving from many people based in the US paint a very different picture. These reports, we hasten to add, have been both numerous and have come from several independent sources, and have emanated both from social media and via personal e-mails.

It seems crystal clear that many irregularities took place in both the casting and the counting of postal votes in this year’s US Presidential Election, particularly in several of the key states. Reports have been made, backed-up by sworn testimonies, of boxes of postal votes turning up mysteriously and late, all containing votes for the Biden/Kamala Harris ticket, votes being registered for dead and non-existent people, and of GOP vote observers not being allowed to witness the count of postal ballots taking place. If such reports only involved small numbers of votes, or if these irregularities only occurred in a single or a couple of states then it would not be a matter of serious concern – but if claims are to be believed these cases of vote-rigging were both massive and systematic. Quite clearly something stinks here, and until full investigations and court decisions take place then the result of the election should not be called.

But 2020 was not the first case of a US Presidential Election being rigged. In 1960 JFK only won by 84 electoral college votes, but it was subsequently acknowledged that the votes in two states which were controlled by powerful Donkey Party big-wigs, Illinois (with its then 27 electoral college votes) where Dick Daley, the Chicago “big city boss”, had overwhelming influence over the electoral process, and Texas (with its then 24 electoral college votes) where Kennedy’s Veep running-mate, Lyndon Johnson, had almost complete control over the state’s administration. If both states had been declared for the Nixon/Lodge ticket, as in reality was almost certainly the case, then Richard Nixon would have been the 35th rather than the 37th POTUS. Alas Nixon proved to be not so much “Tricky Dickie” as “cowardly Dickie”, and didn’t possess the backbone to challenge the rigged votes. As a result not only was the US subjected to eight years of Kennedy/Johnson liberal social policies, but the example of how easy it was to rig a Presidential Election served as an awful precedent for a similar Donkey Party steal 60 years later. It is of course also interesting to note that the Donkey Party candidates at both these controversial elections were devout Roman Catholics with strong Irish nationalist backgrounds, who harboured extreme anti-British sentiments.

It is surely important that not only should the US electoral process be free and fair, but that it should be seen to be free and fair – and that most certainly is not the case at present. At the time of writing the State of Georgia has already announced that there will be a full re-count after the astonishing result there, and the bare minimum which should be demanded is that similar re-counts should take place in all the states where the result was close and there have been substantiated claims of irregularities. In those states where the most damning accusations of vote riggings have been made then all postal votes should be examined to confirm their validity, and if this proves to be impossible then a complete re-run of that state’s election should take place, with no postal votes being allowed except in the most exceptional and authentic cases.

There are those of course who argue that the stipulations of the US constitution state that the dates for Electoral College voting and the Presidential Inauguration are “set in stone”, and that there therefore isn’t time to stage any re-runs – but this is not the case. Up until 1933 the dates of the Electoral College votes were chosen independently each electoral cycle, and the Presidential Inauguration took place on 4th March (or the day after) every time. It was only in 1937 that the date was pushed forward to 20th January (or the day after). There is therefore nothing unacceptable in pushing the Presidential Inauguration back again until 4th March so that the necessary re-runs can take place. If the US authorities fail to do this and allow the controversial Biden/Kamala Harris ticket to take office following an election result which substantial numbers of people are convinced was fraudulent, then the United States would become the laughing stock of the Western World, and respect for the US worldwide would diminish substantially accordingly.

Alas, the continuing “lockdown” lunacy in the UK has meant that the Springbok Club was not able to celebrate UDI Day as usual this year, although several individual members managed to celebrate this important date in their own way.

Provisional plans are however being taken to celebrate the Day of the Vow in London during December, though this alas still depends upon all the draconian “lockdown” regulations being lifted by then. The Springbok Club is furthermore already working on an exciting itinerary of events for 2021.

“Our team was alerted by South Africa’s Animal Welfare Society (AWS) to this appalling evil. It's heartbreaking, but it seems some people are taking their corona lockdown frustration out on street dogs, and that some individuals find it easier to bury a dog alive then get the poor creature proper care. It may sound incredible, but we deal with things like this every day.

“In one case, a brindle pit-bull had its back deliberately broken and was then buried alive. The dog, who we named Rex, was waist-deep in sand, crying out in fear and pain as he tried and failed to free himself.

“The team carefully dug Rex out and noticed the dog was unable to stand. Rex was given emergency medical treatment, but his spine was completely severed. HOISTED BY HIS OWN PETARD!

On 9th November Greg Clarke resigned as Chairman of the Football Association following controversy over certain remarks which he made to the Parliamentary Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee. The remarks which were objected to, apparently by other FA officials, all seemed to be totally innocuous however, and included 1) referring to “Coloured footballers” (for those ignoramuses who are unaware the term “Coloured” is the grammatically correct term for a person of mixed White and Negro blood, and so as a high proportion of foreign soccer players currently playing in the English game do have mixed White and Negro blood Clarke was therefore quite correct in making this observation), 2) saying that South Asians and “Afro-Caribbean people” have “different career interests” (what’s wrong in that?) and 3) stating that being homosexual was a life-choice (isn’t this true?).

Before we start to feel too sorry for Greg Clarke however, let us remember that it was under his watch that some of the most diabolical manifestations of leftist “political correctness” were imposed upon English Association Football. The most disgusting example of this was of course the insistence that all Premier League players bear the highly objectionable “Black Lives Matter” slogan of the US Marxist rioters and looters on the backs of their shirts. Clarke’s term of office also involved a period when it seemed to be the intention of English FA management to select as many non-English players to play for the England national teams as possible. All that has happened now is that Clarke has been hoisted by his own “politically correct” petard. He deserves no sympathy whatsoever.

The leader of the Democratic Alliance in “Gauteng” (the Pretoria, Witwatersrand, Vaal Triangle area) John Moodey dramatically resigned his post recently, claiming that the current dominant faction within the party was trying to create another apartheid regime. If true then many South Africans of all races would of course rejoice, but it is worth remembering that the Democratic Alliance was formed by a merger between the ultra-Leftist Progressive Federal Party and the sell-out National Party – the former being fanatically opposed to the policy of separate development (apartheid) and the latter which abolished this policy! Moodey’s claim is therefore bizarre in the extreme, but simply seems to confirm that the “new” South Africa has now descended from chaos and disaster into total farce.

A number of our supporters have informed us that they seemed to observe that HM The Queen was wearing a broach to attach her poppies on Remembrance Sunday this year which bore the Rhodesian Flame-Lily design. Was this just a chance selection by Her Majesty’s dresser who was unaware of the significance we wonder, or was Her Majesty trying to send a subliminal message? Her own Mother was of course a strong though circumspect supporter of the Hon. I’ve just spotted your July edition and your request for information about Deborah “Debbie” Toms. I’m afraid I have some bad news for you.

I believe that you knew Debbie Toms when she and the rest of her family, as well as me, were heavily involved with the Save Rhodesia Campaign during the late 1970s. Although I don’t know where she is now, I’m afraid that by the early 1980s she had become involved with a really nasty crowd of druggies, homosexuals – and yes, satanists.

Apparently she was introduced to this crowd by a woman who she worked with at Isaacs Geshin, whose brother was the leading presence of this set-up. I never knew her real name, but she was always known as “Pinocchio” because of her long pointed nose. She looked like a witch, and probably was a witch!

THE “NEW” SOUTH AFRICA AS IT REALLY IS

Sir,

A couple of days ago I came across a video entitled ‘Australian Patriot Warns of Planned Genocide in South Africa’ (https://youtu.be/PehxRBI4_bA). It was dated two weeks ago and warned that there was soon going to be mass murder and genocide of the Whites in South Africa. All communication would be cut including the Internet, meaning that victims would be unable to summon help - if there was any, knowing how corrupt and useless the Police are. My friend Patrick who runs a charity, Farmers Aid tells me that the savages will be going through the Provinces and that they are starting to ‘’clean up’ the Free State first. It’s an utterly horrific scenario.

I have forwarded the video with a covering email to the mainstream media here (6 newspapers plus the BBC Newsdesk). I have also sent it to the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and to Dan Crenshaw an aide to Donald Trump. I’m not holding out any hopes of success but I cannot just sit and do nothing.

Patrick also sent me a photograph and details of a farm attack which I was able to post on Facebook. I’m hoping that he will send more. They come from News24 - I was subscribed to it at one time but somehow my subscription lapsed. I must try to put that right.

I shall continue to do everything in my power to make the world aware of what is happening in South Africa

OBITUARY

JOHN “J.J.” WILLIAMS

It was with much sadness that we learnt of the recent death of John James Williams – known universally simply as “J.J.Williams” - at the age of only 72.

J.J.Williams was born near Maesteg and excelled at school, particularly in sports. He first competed internationally at Athletics, representing Wales in all the sprint events at the 1970 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. But it was in Rugby Union that he found his international fame.

He first played for Bridgend, before moving to Llanelli in order to be with the legendry coach Carwyn James. Almost immediately after this move he came to the notice of the Welsh selectors and won his first international cap in 1973. From then onwards his rise was meteoric. Because of his electric speed he proved a natural wing three-quarter, but was also renowned for chipping the ball over oncoming opponents to avoid being tackled, then collecting the ball to score uncontested tries. He played a total of 30 internationals for Wales – which included participating in four Five Nations triumphs and two Grand Slam titles – scoring 12 tries. He was also selected for the famous 1974 British Lions Tour of South Africa, where he played in all four Tests and scored four tries, and for the 1977 British Lions Tour of New Zealand where he played in three Tests.

It should be remembered that at the time of the 1974 British Lions tour South Africa still enjoyed civilised rule, and as a result all players were subjected to severe intimidation and pressure by Left-wing subversives to withdraw from the tour, this being particularly the case in south Wales with its unfortunate tradition of depressive socialism. In the end only one played refused to go on the tour, with the overwhelming majority of Welsh players, including J.J.Williams, bravely defying the Left-wing threats. As a result of this happy and successful tour most players formed lasting friendships with many of their South African kith and kin who they both met and played against, and this was evidently particularly the case with J.J.Williams.

After retirement J.J.Williams showed his rejection of socialism in another way, for he became a highly successful entrepreneur. He founded his own commercial and industrial painting company, and with a group of other former Welsh internationals formed a consortium who took a stake in the Millennium (now Principality) Stadium in Cardiff. All of J.J.Williams’s three children happily inherited his own sporting genes, with all of them representing Wales at various Athletic events, and one, Rhys Williams, going on to represent Great Britain where inter alia he won the Gold Medal in the 400 Meters Hurdles at the 2012 European Championships.

J.J.Williams was a great Welshman and a Great Briton, whose memory will live on to inspire other British sports men and women for generations to come. Our sincere condolences are expressed to all members of his great family.

On 5th October, after returning to the White House fit and fully recovered following barely two days in hospital, and only four days after being tested positive for Covid-19 (Wuhan Flu), President Donald J. Trump told the world “Don’t be afraid of Covid”. In a subsequent tweet he stated: “Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the vaccine, die from the Flu. Are we going to close down our country? No, we have learned to live with it just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!”. Surely there have been no more sensible comments made by a world leader since all the Covid-19 hysteria began. Rarely has a more statesmanlike statement been uttered.

After making these enlightened comments President Trump stood on the White House balcony and nonchalantly removed his facemask, folded it, and placed it in his pocket. This poignant image has already achieved iconic status, and is destined to become an enduring vision of these current sorry times in years to come, inspiring all those who actively oppose the present draconian restrictions of our right and liberties. Our one criticism of President Trump in this regard is that we believe he should have taken the stupid object onto the White House lawn and ceremoniously burnt it – encouraging all about him to do likewise!

But it is not only for not over-reacting to all the Wuhan Flu paranoia that President Trump must be praised. A rarity among politicians, he has lived up to his campaign pledges, and has certainly started to make America great again. He has ensured the building of an effective wall across the Mexican border, he has presided over an upturn in the US economy, thus creating more jobs, and perhaps most importantly of all he took decisive action against the “enemy within” by deploying the National Guard to confront the Marxist insurrectionists who have organised co-ordinated riots and lootings across the country. To be sure, President Trump’s record has not been perfect, particularly as we have commentated about previously by not deploying US forces sufficiently in Syria in order to end that country’s civil war and thereby to stop the swarm of unwanted refugees entering Europe. He also dismissed a number of the most able members of his administration for seemingly no reason, most regrettably John Bolton, and furthermore made some most unacceptable comments about the late, great Senator John McCain of Arizona, which has made him many unnecessary enemies – but overall President Trumps record has been exemplary, and he will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

Compare this to the alternative. Joe Biden is of Irish Republican Roman Catholic ancestry, and as a result seems to be sympathetic towards the SF/IRA terrorists. Not surprisingly he thereby tends to be fanatically anti-British, which is confirmed by his recent assertion that he would not accept any trade agreement with the post-Brexit UK. Far-Left though he is in his policies, he doesn’t seem to be Left-wing enough for his Veep running-mate, Kamala Harris, who has attacked him in the past for his alleged associations with conservative congressmen. Somehow the United States managed to survive both the Clinton and the Obama years, but the prospect of a Biden/Kamala Harris administration – who both obscenely showed sympathy with domestic subversives by publically “taking the knee” - is truly frightening! American voters must therefore remember that they are not only electing a President of their country, but also the leader of the Free World – and that only a continuing Trump Presidency is acceptable to patriots and freedom-lovers throughout the Western world!

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS

The Springbok Club managed to fulfill its promise to the late and great Peter Sladden last month by maintaining the “Raising of the Flag” tradition. Unfortunately, because of all the draconian “lockdown” restrictions in force across the country, this event could only be enacted symbolically this year, and was actually more of a “flag unfurling” than a “flag raising”, but even so the important thing was that Peter Sladden’s great tradition continued. This year’s ceremony was held at Hythe on the south Kent coast – an area which was known as “Hellfire Corner” during the Battle of Britain, which as Peter Sladden served in the RAF during WW2 seemed particularly appropriate, and indeed a couple of participants at this year’s event passed by the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne near Folkestone en route to Hythe!

As soon as all the “lockdown” lunacy is over the Springbok Club will of course be resuming its regular monthly activities, and full details of these with be given in future editions of the SCN.

“Because on the very next island along, with the very next sub-species of tiger, exactly the same thing is happening again.

“There are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left, and that number’s going down. Despite an unrelenting effort from conservation teams, there are still not enough areas protected to stop poachers seeping through and setting their deadly snares.

“The tigers themselves have no idea. They’ve not witnessed every single Javan and Balinese tiger dying. They’ve no clue about the hundreds of their kin who’ve had their legs needlessly shredded by snares before their skull was blasted by a bullet. They can't avert the slaughter they don't see coming.

COUNTY CRICKET UNDER ATTACK BY FOREIGNERS

Over recent weeks former Asian players from both Yorkshire CCC and Glamorgan CCC have made allegations that their previous county cricket clubs were “institutionally racist” (whatever that curious phrase means). These claims were both made by former players who clearly have “chips on their shoulders” because their contracts had not been renewed by the clubs in question, almost certainly because their playing abilities had not proved up to standard. Their allegations were further shown to be unfounded by the fact that other Asian players on the Yorkshire staff asserted that they were total nonsense.

With the advent of the franchise T20 competition in England and Wales – in which players from around the world are open for selection – we believe that the traditional county structure of cricket in England and Wales should be open for British players and players of British ethnic origin only. If Asian players wish to play first-class cricket – and indeed other sports at the highest level - then they should play in their own Asian countries.

ENCOURAGING LOCAL OPPOSITION TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Whilst en route to the “Raising of the Flag” event in Hythe a couple of Springbok Club members happened to meet a person on the bus who was proudly wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan “British Lives Matter”. During resulting encouraging conversation it turned out that the person wearing this t-shirt was a member of a group in Folkestone who were actively monitoring and opposing the housing of illegal immigrants in the town – and were placing videos of what they found on YouTube. These videos can be accessed simply by “googling” the phrase “Frontier House Folkestone” on YouTube, and we therefore encourage all readers to try to view some of these and to add comments of support to this group where appropriate.

Very interesting to see reference to Imperial Road in Gillingham in last month’s SCN. Imperial Road was once home to three generations of the Cowie family. Really marvellous people; pillars of the local community and real credits to the British race.

I went to school with the son, Andy Cowie. He was splendidly talented, and produced a schoolboy newspaper called The Daily Sexpress – quite some achievement in the days before DTPs and the Internet! This got him into trouble with the school authorities because of its cheeky nature – but it was bloody funny!

Andy had three sisters, though one I believe was adopted. The eldest sister, Margaret, was the spitting image of Natalie Wood – a real stunner – who gained the seemingly inevitable nickname of Maggie “Let Me Entertain You” Cowie. I wonder what has happened to them all?

I would like to say that I have appreciated the obituary and for your effort contacting people that my Uncle James knew.

To mention a little more about my Uncle, as his niece growing up: I found that he made the effort to talk to us when we had the chance to see him. I remember the special occasions that we were together, this including Uncle James and Aunty Anne and family. Us kids loved fudge and of course you know the Scottish are fantastic at making fudge. I, and my sisters, Elaine, Natalie and Lisel, encouraged my Dad, George, and my Uncle James to have a competition as to who would make the better fudge. It was great fun, especially licking out the fudge pot, and feeling it crumble in our mouths.

The two Dads, were great fun, challenging each other and we had loads of laughs. Of course I felt my Dad's fudge was the best, and Uncle James's kids felt their Dad's fudge was the best. To be honest they were both excellent. It was the comments and the baiter between the two brothers that was great fun to.

The quality of personality that I loved about my Uncle James was that he showed interest in us and made the effort to talk to us. You see we hardly ever saw my Dad and Uncle James and family because my Mum and Dad divorced when we was very young. However when we did see my Uncle James he showed interest and had a particularly lovely caring relationship with my sister Elaine. He adored my sister and my sister felt that he was very much a second Dad to her. He was a good, kind and generous man, who took great care of his family and was generous to others as well. He's one of those Uncles that you just don't come across these days. He cared and kept in touch with people that meant a great deal to him. He is sorely missed by many.

VICTORIAN DISASTER

Sir,

Nn doubt you have heard about our State of Victoria, Premiered by a Marxist, Daniel Andrews. The man is quite mad; indeed, I believe he has mental problems. He has become a dictator and has locked down the whole state, which produces 25 per cent of the nation's economy. He is now planning to extend the lock down for another 12-18 months. He's enjoying the power. Parliament is not meeting as he has the power, under the circumstances, to prevent it from doing so. There are legal moves to have him removed and even to have him arrested for causing the deaths of so many in aged care because of his laxness, but he blames the people of Victoria rather than he and his useless, corrupt government. This is a real problem. It is unbelievable that this is happening in Australia. Quite frankly our State Premiers have all been proved to be wanting and our Prime Minister weak.

Andrews is hated, but his Marxist supporters and those on the Left love him, regardless of the fact he is a repulsive figure.

HONOURING A FORGOTTEN IMPERIAL HERO

Although the main purpose of the Springbok Club’s visit to Chatham in August was to pay respects at the the Royal Naval War Memorial, particularly to the memory of Sub.Lieut. Charles van der Byl (see September 2020 SCN), the organisation did however inadvertently discover much about another important historical figure during this trip. This was Thomas Waghorn, the 19th century naval hero, Imperial pioneer and entrepreneur.

A statue to Thomas Wagthorn was erected near to the Chatham Railway Station in 1888, but until recently very few people in the locality knew the name of the person who this statue commemorates, let alone his achievements. The most notable of these achievements was his mapping and establishment of an overland route between Cairo and Suez which, prior to the construction of the Suez Canal, cut the journey time between the UK and India considerably. Alas in more recent years this statue has been best known in the area for being inevitably topped by a traffic cone at New Year and during other festivities!

Thomas Waghorn had been born at a residence in Chatham High Street in 1800, and at the age of only 12, being precociously intelligent, joined the Royal Navy at Chatham Dockyard as a junior midshipman. His early RN career saw his sailing to the Indian Station, but cut-backs in naval expenditure following the end of the Napoleonic Wars meant that his RN career was stymied, and as a result he resigned his commission and joined the Bengal Pilot Service of the East India Company at Calcutta

He soon found himself enlisted for service in the First Burmese War of 1824 where he fought with great distinction, mounting a 12-pounder gun on a rocky island in the Arakan River, which was subsequently named Waghorn’s Rock in his honour. But his interests were soon focused elsewhere, specifically on the advent of steam ships and his accurate prediction that they would soon take the place of sailing ships, and the possibilities which this development would present.

He knew well the long length of time that the sea journey to India via the Cape of Good Hope took, and when once ordered to return to India at haste via Egypt he pre-empted the idea of constructing a Suez Canal by having the foresight to propose the establishing of an overland route between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. With no initial support coming from the East India Company for this visionary plan he resigned from the company’s service, and with the support of the Pasha of Egypt he put his ideas into practice. The original plan was to construct the overland route between Alexandria and Suez, but the coming of the steam ships meant that navigation down the Nile Delta became far easier, and so an even shorter overland route was then mapped and established between Cairo and Suez. Although his claim that this route would cut the journey time between the UK and India in half was an exaggeration, it did even so reduce the journey time considerably. This overland route, which entailed camel and pack-horse trains travelling between one ship at Cairo to another on the Gulf of Suez, was of course not suitable for heavy cargo, or for any but the most intrepid traveller, but it came into its own when it came to postage, particularly for important papers sent between officials in London and India!

Waghorn’s visionary plan was therefore quickly a great success – so much so that after only a few years in operation the operation was bought-out by a combination of the P.& O. steamship company and the Pasha of Egypt. By now quite a wealthy man Waghorn did not sit back on his laurels, but expanded his business, by then based in Cornhill in the City of London, to establish speedy postal services across Europe – an enterprise assisted considerably by the advent of continental railway systems.

Alas Thomas Waghorn died prematurely aged only 49 in January 1850, and is buried at All Saint’s Church in Snodland (his ancestral home). He was remembered fondly and well throughout the rest of the 19th century however, and not only was the surviving statue to him in Chatham erected, but Ferdinand de Lessops, being so impressed by his earlier achievements, had a statue of him erected at Suez when the Suez Canal was constructed. Alas, in an earlier version of the current Marxist co-ordinated vandalism of statues to our great Western historical heroes, the Egyptian tyrant and thief Nasser had this statue destroyed when he illegally seized the Suez Canal in 1956.

Although the arival of the Suez Canal meant that Thomas Waghorn and his achievements were largely ignored throughout the 20th century, as the Springbok Club discovered during its visit to Chatham in August, interest in him has recently been revived in the locality – mainly thanks to the Wetherspoon’s pub chain, who have named their Chatham outlet “The Thomas Waghorn” in his honour (with Waghorn’s statue helpfully seeming to point in the direction of the pub!) – and furthermore Wetherspoons must be greatly congratulated upon naming to many of the pubs in their chain after local historical heroes! The Springbok Club will of course continue to honour and remind people about Imperial heroes of our past such as Thomas Waghorn – and hopefully one day we will be able to witness his statue once again rising again at Suez!
