SPRINGBOK CYBER NEWSLETTER
July 2002 edition
The recent visit by Nelson Mandela to Barlinnie Jail in Glasgow in order to see the Libyan inmate Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi who is imprisoned there received widescale publicity in the international media.
Al-Megrahi, of course, was convicted of planning and planting the bomb which destroyed the Pan Am Flight 103 airliner over Lockerbie, in which all the passengers were slaughtered, along with dozens of other innocent people on the ground. It was the most heinous case of mass-murder ever to be perpetrated on British soil. Al-Megrahi was tried and convicted at a Court in the Netherlands under Scottish law. His trial and subsequent appeal took place in a blaze of international publicity. There can therefore be no doubt whatsoever about its fairness and the validity of the verdict.
Mandela, however, has now called for a further appeal to be granted to al-Megrahi, and for him to be transferred to a prison in a North African Muslim country. His unwarranted intervention is this case has been condemned by many in authority in Britain, and has been viewed as an insensitive insult by those who lost loved ones in the Lockerbie atrocity.
But should Mandela's callous intervention in this regard come as such a surprise? Mandela himself, after all, is a convicted terrorist criminal, who received a life sentence in 1963 for his part in a terrorism campaign which included the bombing of Johannesburg Railway Station, in which many innocent civilians were killed and badly injured. He was caught red-handed at a house in Rivonia with enough arms and explosives to blow up half of Johannesburg. The death sentence was then still in force in South Africa, and Mandela should have been sentenced to be hanged according to the gravity of the case against him. Only the existence of a liberal judiciary in South Africa at that time prevented this punishment from being imposed. Is it any wonder therefore that he should now be finding common cause with his fellow-terrorist al-Megrahi?
The authorities must stand fast in this case and not allow al-Magrahi to be moved to any other country where his terrorist activities might be viewed with more sympathy. Better still, in view of his apparent admiration for al-Megrahi, perhaps it might be a good idea for Mandela to be accommodated alongside him in Barlinnie Jail - and thereby to serve the rest of the life imprisonment to which he was justly sentenced in 1963, and from which he should never have been released.

SPRINGBOK CLUB KENT BRANCH SUMMER BRAAI
The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club recently held their annual summer braai, which turned out to be a successful and highly enjoyable event.
Held in the scenic village of Old Wives Lees, it is the same venue used regularly by the Kent Branch of Rhodesians Worldwide, and indeed it was the braai facilities constructed by the local branch of RW which were utilised for this event. The Springbok Club is therefore most grateful both to the Old Wives Lees Village Hall Committee and to the Kent Branch of RW for their help in making this such a splendid occasion.
The guest of honour was Mr. Stuart Millson, the editor of the publication "Kent Writers" and a regular contributor to the magazine "This England", who gave a most interesting key-note speech on the nature of Englishness, and how this was now being threatened - as South Africa and Rhodesia had been destroyed earlier - by the forces of international liberalism. Unfortunately the numbers in attendence were somewhat disappointing, due undoubtedly, as several people observed, to the World Cup Final taking place on the same day. Even so all those who did attend had a marvellous time, and were highly impressed by Mr. Millson's talk.
It is hoped that the Kent Branch of the Springbok Club will be able to use the same picturesque venue in future years for their annual summer braais - but in the meantime will continue to hold their regular informal "pub evening" gatherings.

JOINT SPRINGBOK CLUB/LONDON SWINTON CIRCLE MEETING
The Springbok Club will shortly be joining forces with the London Swinton Circle to hold an important joint meeting under the banner of the Patriotic Forum. The details are as follows:-
Date : Monday 8th July 2002
Time : 18.45 hrs for 19.00 hrs.
Venue : The House of Lords - Committee Room 3a
Guest Speaker : Mr. MAURICE XIBERRAS
Maurice Xiberras was Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Labour of Gibraltar from 1969 to 1972, serving in the Integration With Britain Government of Mr. (now Sir) Bob Peliza. He subsequently served as the Leader of the Opposition in Gibraltar from 1972 to 1979. He will be speaking on the current situation in Gibraltar, and how the effective and imaginative protest campaigns staged by the Government and people of Gibraltar have been able to thwart recent attempts by the Blair Government to surrender sovereignty of the Rock to Spain.
[This meeting is being hosted by Lord Stoddart of Swindon, in whose name the Committee Room has been booked. For those unfamiliar with attending meetings in the Houses of Parliament the procedure is as follows: Enter by the St.Stephen's entrance, but do not wait in the queue for the Strangers Gallery. Once you pass through security ask to be directed by the police or other officials in Central Lobby. It is possible (though unlikely) that the Committee Room could be changed at the last minute, so ask for the Committee Room which has been booked in the name of Lord Stoddart, rather than its number or the name of any organisation.]

LONDON SWINTON CIRCLE MEETING
The London Swinton Circle recently held a well-attended meeting at Portcullis House in London which was addressed by David Burnside, the UUP MP for South Antrim.
Mr. Burnside was forthright in his comments and answered questions robustly. He commented on a wide range of issues, and the key points which he made were: 1) that a united Unionist Party was vital, 2) the current "peace process" was dead, and that attempts should be made to end power-sharing with Sinn Fein/IRA, and 3) any future deal with the Conservative Party would need to involve a commitment to restore the RUC name and symbols.

S.A.PATRIOT-IN-EXILE
It is now some two-and-a-half-years since the latest edition (No.35) of S.A.Patriot-in-Exile was published, and many subscribers - quite naturally - have been enquiring about what has happened to the magazine which they have already paid for.
There has been more than sufficient material to publish issue No.36 for some time now, but alas the only thing preventing this from happening has been the lack of finance. Magazines such as S.A.Patriot-in-Exile with limited advertising revenue always rely upon contributions from supporters who are in a position to give a little extra to survive. If anyone is in a position to help us with any such donations then we would be most grateful.
All contributions should be made payable to "Patriotic Press" and sent to: S.A.Patriot-in-Exile, BCM SAPAT, London WC1N 3XX, U.K.

BOOK OFFERS
COVOS BOOKS of South Africa are specialist publishers of Africana, and offer a wide range of most interesting and illuminating books which will appeal to many of our supporters. Amongst the titles which they stock are:-
MAFEKING! by Malcolm Flower-Smith and Edmund Yorke
Psychologically affected by the fact that it was from Mafeking that the Jameson Raid was launched, the Boers determined to regain this key town. The exceptional military leadership, indomitable spirit and personal charisma of Col. Baden-Powell made him the ideal officer for the British defence - the source of inspiration for the defenders of Mafeking during the epic 7 month seize. By March 1900, the garrison was famished; death and destruction had become daily fare. When, in May, Mafeking was finally relieved, the British nation was swept by a wave of patriotic hysteria, unequalled since. Softback, 222x152mm, 214 pages, 50 b/w illustrations. R100.00.
HOW WE KEPT THE FLAG FLYING, by Donald MacDonald. Hard cover, 213 x 137 mm., 303 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations and various diagrams. This enduring story of the Siege of Ladysmith is the first in a series of Anglo-Boer War reprints. Price R169.95.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?
No.44 : Mr. ALAN BURGESS of Durban.
Alan Burgess worked as a systems analyst for the Unilever company in Durban, and was last known to be employed at their SAWS (South African Wharehousing Services) subsidiary. He was a sincere and dedicated patriot (though alas his employment position meant that he could not be as active as he would have liked), and was also a keen handgun shooter. He was an excellent host, always full of bonhomie, and the braais which he staged at his various homes were always marvellous events, and provided excellent opportunities for his more active political colleagues to "unwind". It is believed that he has now left South Africa, but we don't know where to. If anyone can help us relocate this good friend and colleague then we would be most grateful.

ROGUES GALLERY
We would like to thank all those supporters who have supplied us with information about the various malcontents who have caused us problems over the Internet during the past few months. It would appear that these trouble-makers are probably simply sick rather than being deliberate agents provocateurs. Happily we can now report that all their infantile attacks and hate-campaigns against us have seemingly ceased.
One individual who caused us considerable problems during the 1980s has been in the news again recently however, and is evidently currently finding himself in very hot water. Renier Schoeman was the Natal Provincial Secretary on the National Party during the P.W.Botha and F.W.de Klerk years, and so great was his influence within the party at the time that he was often referred to as the "sinister grey eminence". Rather than attacking the Left in the form of the PFP, however, Schoeman seemed to reserve his main venom for the parties of the patriotic Right - the HNP and the Conservative Party. In his vindictive antagonism against the forces of patriotism he proved himself to be something of a coward however. He informed the Durban Parliament (a completely neutral debating society where members of all political parties regularly participated) that he would have no further dealings with the organisation - simply because he had seen some other members of the society actively campaigning for the CP during the Umlazi by-election of 1990! (In this action he was weirdly supported by Henry Dawson, who at that time allegedly sat on the CP benches! The turncoat Dawson subsequently defected to Inkatha). There was much speculation at this time that Schoeman was a secret sympathiser of the ANC terrorists - reports which were even passed onto us from sources within the National Party.
Now comes news that this same Renier Scoeman is a keen advocate of the alliance between the so-called "New" National Party and the ANC terrorists. In so doing he has even been unwise enough to call Tony Leon, the leader of the Democratic Alliance, a "political swindler" - a slanderous remark which has evidently left him facing a R1 million lawsuit for defamation. All we can say now is "we told you so".
-------------------------------------------------------------------
EDDIE BARLOW
It has recently been reported that Eddie Barlow, the great South African cricketer, has fallen upon hard times, both medically and financially, and that a dinner will shortly be held in London to raise funds for his well-being. He is now evidently confined to a wheelchair, and has moved with his British wife to her native Wales, so as to be able to take advantage of the first-world health-care services of the UK, which alas are no longer available in South Africa.
"Bunter" Barlow first became famous in the UK during Pieter van der Merwe's tour of 1965, when the whole side were "hero-worshipped" by all British patriots and supporters, mainly because of the disruptive antics of the communist extremists who sought to halt this sporting tour by their kith-and-kin.
Alas, however, in spite of all this adoration from overseas supporters of the South African cause, "Bunter" incredibly agreed to stand as candidate for the anti-White South African PFP in the Simonstown by-election of 1980. What caused this aberration cannot be understood, but it soon became known that he was not ideologically attuned with PFP policy, and rapidly fell out with the PFP hierarchy. Famously he did not even turn up for the count at the by-election! But by even being prepared to stand as a PFP candidate Barlow lost himself many friends. As was stated in "S.A.Patriot" No.3, "Bunter's stand brought much sadness to his many friends and admirers around the world. By identifying himself with a party which has been continuously rejected at the polls, and which advocates an ideology which has proven a disastrous failure in all other equivalent societies where it has been adopted, he brought only misgivings on himself, his Western Province Union, and the game of cricket in South Africa."
All this was far different from his days a few years earlier when "Bunter" played as Derbyshire's overseas player, and when he became a firm favourite of the White working-class miners of the region. Again as reported in "S.A.Patriot" No.3, "By all accounts he was very wont, during these days, to frequent the working-man's clubs of Derby and Chesterfield where he shared in many a raucous 'ethnic' joke."
During these sad times we choose to remember the Eddie Barlow of the 1965 tour and his subsequent days playing for Derbyshire, rather than the aberration of his bizarre 1980 PFP candidature. We wish him well.
