SPRINGBOK CYBER NEWSLETTER

November 2011 edition

We know that we have often been criticised in the past for commenting upon issues which are not of direct Southern African significance. We believe even so, however, that the economic crisis which is currently engulfing the "Eurozone" (and by implication the whole of the EU) is of such fundamental global importance that we cannot let it pass without comment.

There have been many, including ourselves from a distance, who have always maintained that the so-called "European Project" is not so much a "European project", but rather a GERMAN project! Through the establishment of first the European Common Market, then the European Community, and eventually the European Union, the German driving force behind the whole spectre has simply been trying to achieve through "peaceful" means what they failed to achieve through more violent methods twice during the 20th Century - namely forceful domination over the entire European continent, if not the world.

The past few weeks, however, have shown that their entire knavish plans are rapidly starting to unravel. Long established and proud European nation-states such as Greece, Portugal - and now even Italy - are being driven into austerity and decline, all because these countries were hoodwinked into adopting the German-engineered Euro single currency. Now even their democratically elected governments - imperfect though they may have been - are being removed at the behest of the German autocrats who control the EU.

If we are to delve back into history we must ask why at the Treaty of Versailles Germany wasn't divided up into its component parts in a similar manner as the dividing up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. If so then undoubtedly there would never have been a Second World War and the needless deaths of an estimated 20 million Europeans. Even more reprehensible is what happened after WWII however, when rather than adopting the proposed Morganthau Plan for the disintegration of Germany the German-sycophantic Democratic Administration in the United States instead initiated the Marshall plan - whereby the initiators of the global conflict and those which surrendered to it were financially rewarded, whereas those Commonwealth countries who nobly and steadfastly opposed German aggression received nothing. This surely was an obscenity unparalleled in human history.

But whereas in 1918 the German Junker class over-extended themselves, and in 1941 the Nazi invasion of Russia marked and sealed their demise, so history will probably look back on 2011 as the year when the German EU project finally met its point of no return and Armageddon.

The single EU currency has now all but collapsed, and the whole EU is rapidly disintegrating with it. We are living in interesting times indeed. Out of the rubble of the EU collapse a revived and rejuvenated Europe of independent and globally-aware European nation-states is bound to re-surface however. The days ahead will inspire us.

SPRINGBOK CLUB KENT BRANCH GATHERING

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club held a most pleasant and enjoyable branch gathering at Canterbury last month, to which a number of supporters from London came down and made several good new contacts as a result. The branch aims to hold another similar get-together in early spring 2012, and it is hoped that supporters in other parts of the country will shortly be initiating branch events as well.

SPRINGBOK CLUB NOVEMBER ACTIVITY

The Springbok Club's November activity will be somewhat more solemn than normal, as the organisation will be attending the Rhodesian Army Association's annual Service of Remembrance in London, something which has been an aim for many years now.

This event will take place on Sunday 13th November at plot 83 outside the northern side of Westminster Abbey, towards St. Margaret's Church. The service itself will commence at 10.40 hrs, and will include the nation's two minute's silence at 11.00 hrs. All those attending are however asked to try to be in place between 10.00 hrs and 10.30 hrs.

Although organised by the Rhodesian Army Association members of both the Rhodesian Air Force Association and the BSAP Regimental Association will be taking part in this ceremony, and all those who support the Rhodesian cause are welcome to attend and observe. The purpose of this service is to remember specifically all those Rhodesians, of all races, who made the supreme sacrifice in two World Wars, the Korean War and the early War against Terror fighting the ZANLA and ZIPRA terrorists in the Rhodesian Bush.

Following the service and a brief chance to exchange greetings with old friends, the Springbok Club party will then take part in a mini walking tour of Westminster conducted by Susan Gordon. This will include a walk down the Victoria Embankment to view the many statues of British heroes situated there, including a number with specific Southern African connections. At the conclusion of this walk the party will adjourn to a near-by family-friendly pub for lunch and a convivial afternoon.

FUTURE SPRINGBOK CLUB EVENTS

In December the Springbok Club will be holding a special meeting to commemorate the Day of the Vow, at which it is hoped that a special guest speaker will be present.

The Springbok Club's 2012 AGM will be held in January 2012 at a location in central London. Later during 2012 the Springbok Club is planning to hold other meetings featuring interesting guest speakers, as well as further trips, excursions and braais.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

The Swinton Circle held its 2011 AGM last month, which proved to be a good success. A slimmed-down Executive Committee was elected for 2011/12, and it is hoped that a reduction in number from seven to five members will enable the organisation to function more fluidly. Two motions were proposed at this meeting, which read :-

"That the Swinton Circle should contact all those Conservative MPs who voted in favour of a Referendum on EU membership and congratulate them on their stance."

and

"That the Swinton Circle should give its full support to a united Great Britain Association Football side taking part in the 2012 London Olympic Games, and should publicise our stance on this matter as widely as possible."

The first of these motions was passed unanimously, and the second was passed with one abstention and none against.

At the conclusion of the business side of this meeting the members present were joined by a number of other supporters to listen to a talk given by Mr. Robin Willow (who had earlier been re-elected as Treasurer of the organisation) entitled "China Today". Mr. Willow, who visits China regularly where he performs as a professional singer and musician, gave a fascinating overview about his experiences and opinions regarding current developments in China, and his views on the country's position in the world. As well as giving his talk, which he illustrated with a number of photographs from his travels, Mr. Willow also entertained the audience with several of his songs with Chinese themes, which were greatly appreciated by all present.

AN APOLOGY

In last month's SCN we reported about how we had recently experienced some computer troubles, but confirmed that these problems had all been successfully overcome through the generousity of two of our members. Although our new computer system is now fully up and running, and although we have successfully rescued about 95% of our data, it has unfortunately been discovered that a batch of e-mails sent to us over the past couple of months appear to have been lost. If you have sent us any e-mails over the past few months which have not been answered then let us apologise for this failure, and request that if possible you re-forward them to us.

KLEINFONTEIN BOEREBELANGE KOöPERATIEF BEPERK

Kleinfontein is a community of approximately 1000 members of the Afrikaner people. We have established a settlement on property owned, controlled and managed by its members with a view to promote their identity in a safe and economically viable environment. OLYMPIC FEVER

It has been suggested that it would be a good idea if real South African and Rhodesian flags could be displayed by as many as possible who attend the various Olympic and Paralympic events - both by those who have tickets to attend the major stadiums, and by those standing by the roadside watching the "free" events. With a global audience in the millions watching the world's premier sporting tournament this is bound to generate huge international interest - and will also of course act as a great morale-booster for our kith and kin still trapped in those beleaguered countries.

If you plan to attend any of the Olympic and/or Paralympic events please try your best to carry and display real South African and Rhodesian flags therefore. WHY WE REJECT THE NAME 'ZIMBABWE'

In the past we have been criticised for not embracing the name 'Zimbabwe' for that sorry land lying between the Zambezi and the Limpopo. For a movement such as ours which can trace its lineage back to the 'Save Rhodesia Campaign' of South Africa during the late 1970s the reason is surely obvious, but for those who still do not understand perhaps words recently written by Peter Petter-Bowyer of the Rhodesian Air Force Association in the 'Rhodesians Worldwide' magazine (Vol.26 No.3) might explain our position better. Peter writes :-

"Today the world may realise why Rhodesia opposed NIBMAR and why surviving Rhodesians refuse to participate as Zimbabweans in London's Remembrance Sunday. It is not the fact that the name Zimbabwe replaced that of Rhodesia, but rather what that name has come to represent. When we hear the name Zimbabwe we think of Mugabe's wholesale greed, corruption and extensive murders that have caused the majority of the gentle population to either flee their country or suffer every imaginable depravity."

We couldn't have put it better ourselves - though we know many people who would have used far stronger terms!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

No.156 : Mr. Philip Powell of Pietermaritzburg.

Philip Powell was a leading member of the University of Natal Pietermaritzburg's chapter of the government funded "National Students Federation" during the early 1980s. After leaving University he disappeared from the political scene, but re-emerged during the late 1980s as a leading official in the Inkatha movement, in which position he evidently became a close associate of Bruce Anderson, who sadly died in September (see obituary in the October 2011 SCN). Like Bruce Anderson he was rumoured to have moved to London following the handover of South Africa to the ANC and the consequent eclipse of Inkatha, but no more specific information about his whereabouts has come to light. Prior to and at Bruce's funeral many colleagues were asking about him, and wondered whether he was even aware of Bruce's untimely death. Any information about where he can now be contacted would therefore be most appreciated, so that it can be ensured that he knows of the sad news.

With reference to the latest SCN, I think your dislike for the "new" South Africa has clouded your judgement. The following article, coming from an Australian, makes it all the more significant -

"Limiting the Power of the whistle.

"There are no doubt a lot of Australian rugby supporters celebrating our victory over the Springboks yesterday. There are also a number of us that are wondering how on earth we managed to pull it off against a side that dominated possession and territory and lineouts. Now, I don’t want to take anything away from the Australian victory – our boys did perform superbly but on the day the Springboks were, we have to admit, the better side. The Boks, as always were magnanimous in defeat with a somewhat pragmatic approach to the result. I wonder what our boys would have said faced with the same situation of blatant incompetence by Mr Bryce Lawrence.

"I support Australia and always will but for those of us that believe in fair play this was a hollow victory. This was very much like fighting a worthy opponent with one arm strapped behind his back – it leaves a bad taste. There were rumours about Mr Lawrence’s impartiality before kick-off from a lot of ex pat South Africans now living in Australia but we tend to dismiss these conspiracy theories with a grin. Certainly, Mr Lawrence’s performance on the field did nothing to dispel those theories. His performance was nothing short of abysmal. He did not award the Bok try because of a dubious forward pass. I have looked and looked and to me, anyway, it did not look forward. Minutes later when the Boks once again breached our defences and were well on the way to scoring another try, he called them back for a forward pass. If the first call was contentious, there certainly was nothing wrong with the second one. Here, I must ask – why not use the 'eye in the sky'? An impressive expensive piece of equipment that should be used for such decisions.

"He failed to penalise Pocock for slowing the ball down. If we had played like that against the All Blacks, they would not have been so quiet about it – and rightly so. In the dying minutes of the game he was in full view of at least 2 high tackles by our boys that went unpunished. Any of these transgressions, if properly acted on, would have surely given the game to the Boks with their advantage over territory. To rub salt in the South African wounds, he awarded a high tackle to the Wallabies for a chest high tackle.

"We won, but did we really? Our sport has always been regarded as a 'hooligans game played by gentlemen' – If we do not want rugby union to degenerate into a farce that soccer can become we need to make sure that our refs are of suitable calibre. They need to be trustworthy gentlemen.

"Mr Lawrence, I would advise against any planned holidays to South Africa for a couple of years.

OBITUARIES

MARION BROOM

We were very sad to read in the latest Rhodesia Christian Group newsletter about the unexpected death of Marion Broom, who worked for over 29 years in the offices of the RCG and the other patriotic organisations run by Mr. Denis Walker. We first came into contact with Marion Broom when Mr. Walker was guest of honour at the Springbok Club's 2003 UDI Day Dinner. She proved to be a most friendly, helpful and efficient person to deal with when organising this meeting, and when we told Mr. Walker how impressed we were with her he smiled and intimated that she was indeed someone very special. Having read the obituary to her in the latest RCG newsletter we realise that she was a great lady indeed, and we only regret that we didn't have the opportunity to get to know her better. Our sincerest condolences are extended to Marion's family and to all who she was close to.

RADCLYFFE CADMAN

Radclyffe Cadman, who died last month aged 87, was the scion of an ONF (Old Natal Family) who were sugar-cane farmers in Zululand. A brilliant scholar who won a place at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he studied Law, he subsequently practiced as a successful advocate in Durban. It was however as a politician that he became best known. Unfortunately, however, he proved to be neither a very astute nor a very successful politician. A loyal member of the United Party of Jan Christiaan Smuts and Sir de Villiers Graaff, it was his misfortune to reach his political zenith at a time when the UP was in terminal decline, and split by a weird dichotomy between mainly Afrikaner liberals who opposed the NP and mainly English-speaking conservatives who rejected the Progressive Party's left-wing stance. As successive factions from the liberal wing of the UP left to merge with the Progs, forming firstly the PRP and then the PFP, Rad Cadman, as newly installed leader, made a terrible mistake in 1977 by re-branding the party as the "New Republic Party" and shifting its centre-of-gravity to the left rather than to the right. By so doing he alienated its grass-roots English-speaking conservative base, the majority of whom subsequently defected to join the right-of-centre Conservative Party when it was launched in 1982. The NRP rapidly thereafter disappeared into obscurity. This present writer had the pleasure of working for Rad Cadman at the 1977 General Election when, having lost his Zululand seat at the previous General Election, he stood in the Musgrave Constituency of Durban. Here he faced the ultra-Prog Ray Swart, who he should have defeated by a mile if he'd been able to sweep up all the NP and HNP votes - as neither party stood for this seat that year. Instead Cadman's left-leaning stance simply meant that most NP and HNP supporters stayed at home, and he simply couldn't "out Prog" Swart to win votes from the left. He was defeated ignominiously, and resigned the NRP leadership almost immediately thereafter, handing over to Vause Raw. His final political post was to be appointed as Administrator of Natal by PW Botha's sellout NP government, in which position he foolishly attempted to initiate the "ZwaZulu-Natal Indaba" which aimed to establish a non-starter joint Zulu/White administration over Natal and KwaZulu. Rad Cadman was however a most avuncular, friendly and charming character, who undoubtedly at heart was a genuine South African patriot. He was alas also extremely politically naive - almost to a point of childishness (probably due to a very happy childhood growing up amongst the traditional subservient Zulus in northern Natal). We prefer to remember the best of Rad Cadman however, a basically good and patriotic man who was way out of his depth in the South African political maelstrom of the 1970s. He also encapsulated the best in the pioneer colonial spirit, arising from pioneer farming stock to win a place at one of the greatest universities in the world, before embarking upon a very successful legal career (albeit at the same time embarking upon a disastrous political career!), before finally returning to his sugar-cane farming roots, in which same farm he was eventually to die.

October 2011 edition
Most people have acknowledged that this year's Rugby World Cup has been one of the most successful ever, and from a distance we wouldn't disagree with this assessment at all.

New Zealand must certainly be congratulated upon not only winning the competition (and of course they didn't have to resort to poisoning the food of their final opponents in order to do this!) but also upon staging such a well-run and orderly tournament. If we have one criticism, however, it regards the over-emphasis given to Maori culture, which stretched from initial tournament publicity and logos to the strange performance of Maoris with a pipe-like contraption before each match. The "Haka" has always been a tradition before the start of All-Black matches of course, but in the past it was always treated as a bit of a laugh - poking fun at the primitive Maoris if anything. More recently however, with the advent of Maoris entering All-Black teams, it suddenly seems to have been taken more seriously. In this regard it should also be remembered that it wasn't until 1970 that the first Non-White was selected for an All-Black side - and that was Bryan Williams, a half-Samoan, not a Maori!

New Zealand - the real New Zealand - has a wonderful and honourable history. Although first discovered by Abel Tasman in 1642, it wasn't until Capt. James Cook re-discovered the islands in 1769 that large-scale Western (almost exclusively British) immigration commenced. Following the Maori Wars and the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, when the Maori tribes finally recognised British rule and the advantages of Western civilisation, New Zealand quickly developed a noble and enterprising culture of its own throughout the 19th century, somewhat distinct from its Australian neighbour. Settlers to New Zealand tended to come mainly from the south and west of England, from Scotland and from Ireland. In this regard it is interesting to note that North Ireland was once known as New Ulster, South Island as New Leinster and Stewart Island as New Munster. (It would be nice if these former names could be re-introduced!) In spite of the development of this distinct culture New Zealanders never forsook their British heritage however, and remained and remain an integral part of the British family of nations - as confirmed by the New Zealand flag and their commitment to the monarchy. New Zealanders fought side by side with their British, Australian, South African, Rhodesian and Canadian kith and kin during two World Wars, in Korea and indeed in the War against Terror today. It should also be remembered that New Zealand was the only country which gave Britain any direct military assistance during the Falklands War, taking over the patrolling of the Pacific from RN ships and thus releasing more RN resources for the liberation of the Falkland Islands. With such a proud and glorious history it is therefore wondered why true New Zealand culture couldn't have been central to the Rugby World Cup trimmings, rather than that of a small and primitive section of the population?

On the field itself, however, the tournament produced many memorable moments - several exciting and close matches, a couple of surprise results and the re-emergence of Wales as a Rugby world power. Unfortunately, however, we hear that there has been much griping in the "new" South Africa about the refereeing of Bryce Lawrence in the quarter-final game against Australia. To be sure, Bryce Lawrence tends to be a very lenient referee, but in this match he was clearly consistent - he was lenient to both sides. What is it that most spectators want - a lenient referee like Bryce Lawrence who lets the game flow, or over-strict referees like, say, Alain Rolland and Wayne Barnes who create nothing but stop-start matches by over-literal interpretation of the rules. We believe the former. The truth of the matter is that the Australian defence was rock-solid, and it is very doubtful whether "new" South Africa would have been able to snatch victory no matter who refereed the match. They were extremely fortunate to beat Wales and almost lost to tiny Samoa. They were certainly not worthy to be world champions, and all the subsequent wailing from "new" South Africans only stinks of sour grapes.

As it is the next Rugby World Cup will take place in England in 2015, and we can't wait. If the "new" South African officials can't accept the decisions of world-standard referees then they should stay at home.

The Springbok Club staged a most pleasant event in September, which began with a conducted sight-seeing walk from Euston Station, through St.Pancras and Camden to Regent's Canal, and from there along the banks of the canal to the venue for the autumn braai, "The Constitution". Special thanks are extended to Susan Gordon for arranging and conducting the sight-seeing walk, to Robin Willow for providing excellent musical entertainment, and to John Pope for performing some absolutely mesmerising magical tricks!

SPRINGBOK CLUB KENT BRANCH GATHERING

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club will be holding an informal pub gathering in Canterbury shortly, to which all members and supporters are given a warm invitation to attend. The details of this get-together are as follows :-

Time : Throughout the afternoon and early evening. Turn-up at any time from 12.30/13.00 hrs onwards.
Venue: "The Bat & Ball", 163 Old Dover Road, Canterbury, Kent (opposite the St.Lawrence Cricket Ground)

This event will take place in the outdoors beer garden if the weather is fine, but in an indoors alcove of the pub if not. The venue provides a wide range of beers and other drinks, as well as serving excellent food selections both at lunchtime and in the evening.

FUTURE SPRINGBOK CLUB EVENTS

In November the Springbok Club plans to attend the annual Rhodesian Remembrance Day Service outside Westminster Abbey. This is a solemn event which the organisation has long planned to partake in, and will be held on Remembrance Sunday itself - which will give everyone the opportunity to attend the National Remembrance ceremony at the near-by Cenotaph as well. Afterwards there is planned to be a conducted walk through the Victoria Embankment Gardens to view the many statues of national heroes situated there, some of which honour those with specific South African connections.

In December the Springbok Club will be holding a special meeting to commemorate the Day of the Vow, at which it is hoped that a special guest speaker will be present.

The Springbok Club's 2012 AGM will be held in January 2012 at a location in central London.

As many supporters may be aware, we experienced some severe computer problems last month which caused considerable disruption to our activities. This was entirely due to the age of our equipment we hasten to add, and not to any malicious interference. Happily we can report that all these set-backs have now been overcome, so that we are once again fully on the road again. In this regard we have two people to thank most sincerely: firstly Mr. Guy Levi who kindly donated us with a complete new computer, and secondly Mr. David Williams who financed the purchase of some necessary new peripheries. With dedicated supporters of our movement such as these we do not doubt that increasing success will be achieved in the days ahead.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

The Swinton Circle will be holding its 2011 AGM later this month, and the details are as follows :-

Date : Wednesday 26th October 2011

Time : Assemble from 18.30 hrs onwards, proceedings to commence at 19.00 hrs.

Venue: HENNESSY'S (the upstairs function room), 36 Jewry Street, London EC3N 2ET. (The nearest tube station is Aldgate [on the Circle Line]. Cross over Aldgate High Street in front of Aldgate Station main exit, turn right and then take the second major turning on the left into Jewry Street. Hennessy's is then on the left).

Only fully paid-up members of the Swinton Circle will be allowed to participate in the business section of this meeting (though annual subscriptions may be paid on the day). All supporters will however be welcome to attend and to witness proceedings. All nominations for office in the Swinton Circle for 2011/12 and motions for debate (all of which must be proposed and seconded by fully paid-up members of the organisation) must be forwarded by e-mail (to swinton@netcomuk.co.uk) to arrive not later than 48 hours prior to the commencement of this meeting.

After the completion of the business side of the meeting there will be a talk given by Mr. Robin Willow entitled "China Today". Robin Willow is a retired civil servant and is also a song-writer, guitarist and singer with several albums completed and released. He has degrees in Mathematics, Management (NVQ) and Fraud Investigation (ACFS), as well as an IOSH Certificate. He has travelled many times to China and speaks, writes and sings in Mandarin. Robin performed his song "Bridge of Swallows" and a Taiwanese song "999 Roses" at the recent "China 60" celebrations in the Westminster Central Hall. This was later broadcast on Phoenix Television in China. As well as giving a talk on his experiences of current-day China, Robin will also be singing a number of his compositions at this meeting.

LATEST DISTURBING REPORT FROM THE ZIMBABWE CONSERVATION TASK FORCE

We have recently received the following most disturbing reports from the ZCTF :-

"Further to the August ZCTF report, the situation in Chiredzi River Conservancy is worsening. The Chiredzi River Conservancy, part of the Trans-Frontier Conservation Area, is an internationally renowned wildlife conservancy in the South-Eastern Lowveld of Zimbabwe. It is being overrun by destructive invaders and its elephant and wildlife population is in severe danger of being wiped out. Reports indicate that the destruction of its fragile ecosystem has reached such serious proportions that its very survival is under threat. Appeals for the government to intervene before the destruction of the environment in the conservancy, and in all areas of Zimbabwe becomes irreversible, are falling on deaf ears. The conservancy is situated in an area classified as Region 5, meaning that it is arid and unsuitable for agriculture. Despite this, invaders have destroyed large areas by burning trees and vegetation in their efforts to grow crops and graze their cattle. Although there is funding available to help them move to areas more suitable for farming, the government turns a blind eye to the problem. Game scouts are employed to patrol the area but their jobs are extremely dangerous and they live under constant threat from poachers, politicians and invaders. They are continually assaulted and abused. In an effort to protect the elephants, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Francis Nhema was approached and asked if the elephants could be moved to a safer area but he was adamant that they stay in the conservancy. Whilst he acknowledged that the invaders were there illegally, he has made no attempt to have them removed.

"We have received reports recently of South African hunters allegedly being given permission by National Parks to shoot buffalo in the Kariba area - apparently for rations. It is thought that two have already been shot and a third is being hunted. The reports say that a buffalo was shot and taken to the weigh bay in the NAU Charara fishing camp where it was skinned. It was then hung in the cold room in the camp - all this apparently with the permission of the Acting Manager of the NAU (National Anglers' Union). The part that doesn't make sense is that normally, when animals are shot for rations, they are taken to Nyanana and not to the NAU fishing camp. We were always under the impression that NAU Charara site was a fishing camp - not a hunting camp. If any tourists were present at the time, they would probably have been quite distressed to see a buffalo being skinned in the weigh bay. The other disturbing factor is that there are only about 32 buffalo left out of an original herd of 650.

"We have received reports of poachers poisoning waterholes in some of the biggest game reserves in the country such as Gonarezhou, Mana Pools, Zambezi, Matusadona, Charara and Hwange. In Hwange National Park, 7 waterholes have allegedly been poisoned. The poison used is known as 'Two Step', apparently because the animals that consume it take two steps and then die. This is an extremely serious problem because when an animal dies after consuming the poison, the scavengers that feed off the carcass, such as hyena and vultures, also die. The only way to get rid of the poison would be to drain the water holes and then dig them up and dispose of the soil in an area where it won't be a danger to any animals or humans.

"We have been informed that National Parks have authorized the shooting of leopard in Matopas National Park, a protected wildlife area. It is extremely distressing to note that the guardians of our wildlife appear to be partially responsible for its demise."

Kleinfontein is a community of approximately 1000 members of the Afrikaner people. No.155 : Mr. Tam McLennon of Durban.

Tam McLennon (his name may have been spelt MacLennon) was a keen and active member of the Durban Branch of the Rangers FC Supporters Association. Originally from Glasgow, he was evidently a keen side-drummer with a Loyalist flute band in the city before he and his family emigrated to South Africa. Some time ago we heard that he had returned to his hometown of Glasgow, but alas we have been unsuccessful in re-establishing contact with him there. All we will add, however, is that he hails from the Finaghy district of south Belfast, traditionally regarded as a staunch Unionist area. If his hatred of the capital city of his country (and coming from a Unionist area we would presume that he regards London as his capital) and his opposition to his own country gaining the prestige and financial advantages of staging the 2012 Olympic Games reflects the official policy of the so-called 'B'NP, then it only confirms once again the total phoniness of this organisation! - Ed.]

OBITUARIES

BRUCE ANDERSON

It was with great regret that we recently learnt of the death of Mr. Bruce Anderson at the tragically early age of only 64. Born in Co.Durham, Bruce was a true and dedicated British global patriot. An active member of the Conservative Party during his younger days, he moved to Rhodesia during the early 1970s and quickly established contact with the ruling RF Government. He was a good friend of the Hon. Ian Douglas Smith, and was tasked to act as adviser to the Rev. Ndabaningi Sithole during the negotiations to form a Transitional Government during the late 1970s. Following he fall of Rhodesia he moved south to South Africa, where he quickly became an influential figure within the Inkatha movement. In this position he was a close adviser to Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, met with President Ronald Reagan on behalf of the organisation, and gave "pep-talks" to Zulus in hostels around Durban regarding the dangers posed to them by the ANC. Shortly before the ANC were handed power he was accused by the dying NP government of organising the transfer of arms from RENAMO in Mozambique to Inkatha, and was deported from the country with only 24 hours notice. Once re-established in the UK he co-founded a very successful company specialising in short-term leases for properties in central London. He also resumed his patriotic activities, becoming active in both the Conservative Monday Club and the Swinton Circle, as well as becoming a Life Member of the Springbok Club. Alas his business suffered severely as a result of the recession during the late 2000s, a situation made worse by some shady dealings undertaken by his business partner (which he was in no way involved with). These severe problems alas affected his personal life greatly, and were probably the underlying reason for his premature death. Our sincerest condolences are extended to his daughter Felicity, his son-in-law Rob Ferguson, his three grandchildren, and members of his second family.

GUSTY SPENCE

It was also of course with much sadness that we learnt of the recent death of Augustus Andrew "Gusty" Spence at the age of 78. A controversial character, but a sincere and dedicated Ulster Loyalist, Gusty Spence was born in the Shankill Road and joined the Military Police after leaving school, serving with both the BAOR and in Cyprus. Being forced to leave the army early because of ill-health he returned home to west Belfast to find Ulster under sustained attack from the Provisional IRA during the early days of the enigmatically named "Troubles". His grandfather had been a leading member of Sir Edward Carson's UVF which had fought to preserve the Union during the early years of the 20th century, and together with other Loyalist colleagues he re-constituted the UVF in 1966. Observing correctly that the Wilson Labour Government of the time were not prepared to protect Ulster's place within the Union the new UVF realised that they must therefore fight the IRA's fire with fire. As a leading member of the paramilitary he was accused of several specific murders of innocent Catholics - all of which he denied until his dying day - and received long-term prison sentences in Long Kesh as a result. During his time of incarceration, however, he came to realise that Ulster's struggle could be won by political activism as well as by paramilitary means. Together with the late David Ervine and Billy Hutchinson he helped found the Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) which appealed particularly to working-class Unionists. He was one of the first to realise that the SF/IRA ceasefire of the late 1990s did not indicate a position of strength, but rather was a sign of weakness. He was chosen to make the joint UVF/UDA announcement of an unconditional ceasefire in response, and won many plaudits for expressing "remorse" for the deaths of all the innocent Nationalists who had been killed in the conflict (a term which SF/IRA has never used in any way). He was criticised by many more hard-line Loyalists for some of his actions during his later life, but the fact remains that in spite of many sickening concessions having been made to the Nationalists the Union still remains secure, and Northern Ireland has prospered as a result. Gusty Spence therefore deserves to be remembered not only for his paramilitary bravery, but also for his expert political analysis which pointed a new direction towards success. Our sincere condolences are extended to all his family and close associates.

South African news has recently been dominated by the actions and statements of Julius Malema, the firebrand leader of the ANC's Youth League, his subsequent court conviction for "hate speech", and attempts to expel him from the ruling ANC.

In spite of much apparent surprise and condemnation on the part of the South African liberal elite, the emergence of Malema and his significant grassroots support would seem to have been inevitable. Indeed the most surprising aspect is that it has taken so long after the ANC were handed power in the early 1990s for someone as extreme and hate-filled as Malema to emerge.

Malema, with his calls for the seizure of White-owned land and the nationalisation of the mines, is simply echoing Mandela's Marxist-inspired rhetoric - and of course we all know the standing which the convicted terrorist Mandela enjoys among ANC hardliners and their apologists. As we've observed previously in these columns, the succession of Mbeki to Mandela proved to be an unexpected improvement, as he was intelligent enough to realise that it was the capitalist system, not communist ideology, which offered the best means for the improvement in conditions for all of

South Africa

's people. This of course is why Mbeki became such a béte noire for the ANC fanatics, and why he therefore had to be removed. Judging from the equally venomous insults currently being levelled towards Zuma by Malema's supporters it would appear that, for all his obnoxious nature, even he hasn't proved extreme enough for the ANC hardcore. The whole history of Black Africa has of course confirmed that right from the beginnings of anti-colonial terrorism it is always the most extreme and the most blood-thirsty leader who emerges to the top. Far longer than expected though it may have been, the emergence of Malema - or perhaps someone even more extreme - has always been just a matter of time.

We have consistently urged all Whites still living in ANC-ruled South Africa to leave the country for the sake of their families and children as soon as possible and by whatever means possible. With almost 4,000 White farmers (let alone a far larger number of White urban dwellers) having been slaughtered in the ANC's de facto genocide campaign, our advice certainly appears to have been well founded - though confirmed in a manner which we never wanted to see. With ZANU-PF style land seizures now looming large there is surely now no excuse whatsoever for Whites who are able to get out of the country to remain in that decaying land.

But apart from the White farming community there is another section of society which has great reason to fear the ascendancy of Malema and his cronies. The threat to nationalise the mines means that the Randlords are now in the sights of the ANC thieves. Often demonised as the "Oppenheimer Empire" by the more conspiratorial-minded, the big mining-houses gave their tacit support to "majority rule" many years ago. Whether this was because of their personal liberal idealism, or whether they naively believed that a Black ANC government would be more malleable is uncertain. All that is clear is that by backing and financing the sell-out NP and the crypto-socialist PP/PFP/DP rather than the pro-capitalist HNP and CP they made a very, very bad long-term business mistake. But of course world affairs are littered by "what may have beens"!

BRANCH GATHERING

Alas it must be reported that last month's gathering of the Northern Ireland Branch of the Springbok Club proved a very problematic occasion. We have been asked not to name the trouble-maker who wrecked this get-together, but must emphasise that he was not and never has been a member of the Springbok Club. We think it goes without saying that the Springbok Club is by nature far more orientated towards the Unionist section of the

Northern Ireland

population, and it was certainly initially believed that the individual in question was a staunch Unionist. In the event, however, he turned out to be a Nationalist with an apparent deep-seated hatred for England, and London in particular (which he constantly dismissed as "finished", without ever explaining what he meant by this curious term!). Even more sickening, however, was his irrational opposition to the 2012 London Olympics - his stated reason being the bizarre and totally unsubstantiated claim that all those involved in organising and constructing the Olympic infrastructure were "foreigners"! When told that in view of his apparent obsession with "foreigners" it would probably be best if he was to move to a foreign country he became animated, and a nasty scene ensued. Those in charge of the Northern Ireland Branch of the Springbok Club must ensure that neither this particular jaundiced individual, nor anyone else who doesn't agree with the basic aims and objectives of the movement, are ever invited to branch functions again.

SPRINGBOK CLUB'S SEPTEMBER BRAAI OUTING

The Springbok Club will be staging its annual Autumn Braai on Saturday 24th September 2011.

There will be two rendezvous arrangements, either: 1) assemble by the statue to Robert Stevenson outside Euston Station at approx. 12.00 noon, after which there will be a conducted sight-seeing walk to the venue (for part of the way along the banks of the Regent's Canal), or: 2) rendezvous at the venue itself, "The Constitution", 42 St. Pancras Way, Camden, London NW1 0QT, any time from 13.30 hrs onwards.

All food and braaing facilities will be provided at the venue, and the cost will be approx. £6.00 per head.

FUTURE SPRINGBOK CLUB EVENTS

The Springbok Club anticipates welcoming a special guest speaker in October, and will be holding a special event to mark UDI Day in November, as well as a Day of the Vow commemoration meeting in December. Further details about all these activities will of course be given in future editions of the SCN.

It is also hoped that a get-together to re-establish the Hampshire Branch of the Springbok Club will be staged shortly.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

The Swinton Circle were very honoured to be able to welcome Mr. Brian Danes as guest speaker last month, for a meeting which proved to be a good success. Mr. Danes, a well-known and highly-respected Conservative activist of many years standing, is currently involved in the establishment of the new "343 Group", a grouping that will look after the interests of those Conservatives who do not currently have a Conservative MP. In his speech Mr. Danes outlined something about the thinking and plans behind this new organisation, and the Swinton Circle pledged its full support for this initiative - indeed the Swinton Circle's September activity will be to help co-ordinate the official launch of this new grouping.

In October the Swinton Circle will be holding its 2011 AGM, which will take the form of a buffet in the City of London. After the business side of the AGM has been concluded the organisation's current Treasurer, Mr. Robin Willow, will be giving a talk entitled "China Today", in which he will outline some of his personal experiences during his recent professional trips to

DOLPHIN RESCUE VIDEO

We have recently been sent the following video recording by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which illustrates something about the excellent work which the organisation's Marine Mammal Rescue Team is doing at Cape Cod in Massachusetts in responding to hundreds of calls about dolphins in trouble. It seems Cape Cod's shallow water and extreme tides can be especially difficult for dolphins to navigate.

As this video shows, rescuers are often faced with treacherous conditions: frigid water, whipping wind, and waist-deep mud. The highly trained team has developed strategies to rescue animals in virtually any situation, and their video can be accessed at :-

This scholarship allows them to study for two years at Oxford University. A great monument was erected to Rhodes at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town. So why did he not succeed? See Rhodes ran into some good Christian Whites called Afrikaners up north, who did not understand or agree with his vision. These Afrikaner farmers called "Boers" halted his visionary plans in the most expensive war

SWEET PROBLEM

Sir,

It was very interesting to see mention of Reg Sweet's two daughters - Pam and Pippa - in your obituary to him in last month's SCN. I knew both Pam and Pippa well through first the National Forum and then the White Rhino Club. Pam had been married four times (twice to the same man!), but when I knew her she was married to a certain Alan Richards, who turned out to be a rather controversial character. Richards was a fantastically wealthy man (rumoured to be a Dollar Millionaire), but the source of his wealth was unknown and he only seemed to operate from a one-man office in Durban's CBD - but significantly he never donated anything substantial to White Rhino Club funds.

Almost immediately that the White Rhino Club was founded in 1980 we became aware there was clearly a spy within our ranks, as detailed information about the formation appeared in the local press. Ian Long had a contact in the SAP special branch who was sympathetic to our aims, and he evidently informed Ian that the spy was Alan Richards. When he heard this Richards threatened to sue Ian's contact, but in the end nothing ever happened. The White Rhino Club of course collapsed less than 18 months after its formation because of serious personality clashes and policy disagreements, and I think it is fair to say that Richards was heavily involved in these.

Nothing further was heard about Richards for several years, until the press reported that "prominent local businessman" Alan Richards had spoken at a meeting of Brendan Willmer's factional "Civic Action League". Willmer, who died of AIDS in 1999, was of course an overt homosexual and an exposed asset of the NP government. Undoubtedly the information provided by Ian Long's contact was therefore correct.

OBITUARY

GEN. MAGNUS MALAN

Gen. Magnus Malan, who died last month, was the one person who could possibly - just maybe - have saved

South Africa

A skilled and distinguished soldier, like all good generals he realised that the availability of logistics was even more important than tactics on the battlefield in order to achieve military success. For this reason he gave great emphasis to the establishment and expansion of Armscor, and through it ensured that

South Africa

became a military superpower. Under his leadership the SADF crushed the Soviet-backed Cuban forces in

Angola

, and came within a whisker of taking Luanda - only withdrawing following demands from he Democratic-controlled Congress in the

United States

and weakness displayed by the South African NP government. Once forced back behind the SWA/Angolan border by political masters, Malan's SADF soon established complete supremacy over the SWAPO terrorists in SWA, so that the ANC terrorists in

South Africa

itself stood no chance of causing more than the occasional disruption.

In spite of all Malan's brilliance in military strategy, he alas lacked even the most elementary political acumen. He attached himself to sell-out South African State President P.W.Botha like a leech, supporting him in surrender after surrender and sell-out after sell-out - even becoming an NP MP after his retirement from the military, and taking over the Defence portfolio from Botha himself.

It was whilst in this position that he was evidently encouraged by former military colleagues to organise an internal coup to depose the sell-out Botha, but alas, in spite of all his military bravery, he seemed to lack the political courage for such an act of daring. Had he done so then he would undoubtedly have enjoyed the support of not only the parties of the Right, but also significant sections of NP grassroots membership, and also that of ex-Servicemen from all parties (and of all races) who had admired and respected his leadership of the SADF. Had he done so then, with Soviet-backed forces already soundly defeated in Angola and SWAPO on the run in SWA, and with closet sympathetic support from both the US and UK administrations of the time, there is no reason to believe that civilised rule in South Africa could not only have been preserved, but would also have prospered.

As it was Malan's failure to act resulted in dire consequences not only for his country, but also for Malan himself. Following the handover of power to the ANC regime Malan was hauled in front of their tame courts for alleged "war crimes" because of his effective military command during the Total Onslaught against the terrorist threat to the country. Although he was never found guilty of any of the trumped-up charges levelled against him his continuous harassment by the courts undoubtedly had a catastrophic effect upon his health, thus resulting in his premature death.

Malan's failure to act to save his country when he was in a unique position to provide leadership will always remain a complete mystery - and also an absolute tragedy.
