January 2005 Edition.

SPRINGBOK CYBER NEWSLETTER

January 2005 edition

Much publicity has recently been given to the signing of the "peace accord" between the Islamic Sudan government and the Negro southern Sudanese rebels. What has mainly been overlooked, however, is the fact that although the civil war in the south of Sudan has been halted, the conflict in the western region of the country - Darfur - has meanwhile intensified.

But "peace accords" throughout Africa invariably mean that fighting has merely been suspended rather than stopped, only to be resumed again a short while later. This has certainly been the case in Angola, Somalia and the Ivory Coast, and probably also in Mozambique, Liberia and Sierra Leone as well.

Furthermore, it was recently revealed that in spite of all the international media attention on the Dafur region of Sudan, the almost unreported civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has actually claimed far more lives during the past decade - over 2 million estimated to have been killed, making it the most deathly armed conflict since WWII. It is much the same concerning media reporting in southern Africa; although much coverage has been given to Mugabe's terror campaign against the farming community in Zimbabwe, little if any publicity is given by the world's media to the far more horrific and genocidal farm murder campaign under Mandela/Mbeki in South Africa.

There is actually hardly a country in Africa which is not currently infected by civil war or other forms of chaos and lawlessness. From the Islamic terrorism of Algeria and Egypt to the farm and urban murder campaigns of South Africa; from the civil wars of Liberia and Sierra Leone to the total anarchy of Somalia. Everywhere it is much the same picture.

But the situation hasn't always been the same. Prior to the post-WWII abdication of colonial responsibilty by the great European powers and the meek surrender of South Africa by the NP administration, the African continent had become a well-governed and increasingly civilised place. Now alas it has all become the "Dark Continent" once again.

In an obituary to Wilfred Thesiger which appeared in the "Daily Telegraph" of August 11, 2004, it revealed that whilst he was District Commissioner of Northern Dafur from 1935 to 1937 he maintained order in the region with only one other Briton and 24 Sudanese Mounted Policemen. If it's been done before then it can be done again. Not only in order to defend the native populations, but also in order to protect the precious wildlife and environment of the African continent, the Western powers must again resume their duties and responsibilities - and, in the words of Kipling, "Take up the White Man's burden" once more!

SPRINGBOK CLUB DAY OF THE VOW COMMEMORATIONS

The Springbok Club marked the Day of the Vow in 2004 by holding its annual commemoration meeting at the famous Red Lion hostelry in Westminster. This turned out to be a well-attended gathering, and was addressed by Mr. Raymond Simpson (the Deputy Chairman of the Springbok Club) who has made extensive studies of the Battle of Blood River and the significance of the Day of the Vow. In his most informative and enthralling speech - which was well illustrated by leaflets containing pictures and diagrams of the event - Mr. Simpson detailed the history of the build-up to the Battle of Blood River, the importance of the Vow which was taken prior to the confrontation, and how the anniversary of the taking of the Vow came to be regarded as holy in South Africa.

Although this meeting took place on the 9th December - a week prior to the official Day of the Vow - Mr. Simpson also reminded everyone that the Vow was actually taken on each day for a week in 1838 prior to the Battle itself, so was therefore first taken on 9th December!

The gathering proved to be a most happy and successful event, and was concluded with a splendid array of buffet snacks.

------------------------------------------------------------------

FUTURE SPRINGBOK CLUB ACTIVITIES

Mr. Tony Waller, a founding member of the Springbok Club and a former member of its executive Committee, will be visiting New Zealand during late January and early February, where he anticipates meeting several patriotic and expatriate southern African organisations and individuals, as well as a number of other prominent personalities. Tony will be giving a report-back on this visit at a Springbok Club meeting to be held in central London on Friday 25th February, and full details will be given in next month's SCN.

The Springbok Club's trip to the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol has now been finalised for Sunday 10th April. Again fuller details will be given in future editions of the SCN.

SPRINGBOK CLUB BRANCH NEWS

The Northern Ireland Branch of the Springbok Club held two important meetings towards the end of the 2004. In November, in order to celebrate UDI Day, they were addressed by Mr. Jim Dixon, the president of the Ely Centre (an organisation which cares for the victims of terrorism), and in December, in order to commemorate the Day of the Vow, the guest speaker was Mr. Wesley Mitchell, a leading member of the branch who has recently undetaken missionary visits to both South Africa and Korea. The Northern Ireland Branch's AGM will take place on Saturday 26th February, and at the conclusion of the business side of affairs they will be addressed by Mr. Chris Richards of the Bedford-based "Protestant Alliance". All current members of the branch will be informed of the precise details of this event in due course.

The London Branch of the Springbok Club are planning a trip to the University Boat Race on Sunday 27th March, which will be followed by their Spring Braai. Full details will be announced as soon as arrangements have been finalised.

The Chilterns Branch of the Springbok Club are co-ordinating a trip to the planned match between Saracens and the Golden Lions (Transvaal) at Vicarage Road, Watford. Alas complications beyond our control means that the precise date of this game has still to be finalised, but hopefully full details can be given in next month's SCN.

PUTTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

We are delighted to be able to report that the excellent letter written by Robert Shipley (the Chairman of the Kent Branch of the Springbok Club) defending the display of the real South African at rugby matches etc. was published in a recent edition of the "South African Times", and indeed received much favourable reaction in subsequent correspondence to the same publication.

BIRD & GAME SANCTUARY IN NEED OF SUPPORT

Sarah Carter and Kate Kaye-Eddie from the Bally Vaughan Bird & Game Sanctuary in Zimbabwe write as follows :-

"Animals are starving as the amount of food is decreasing for the demand that is needed. Recently we have been reduced to feeding the predators other animals that have died in the game park such as the matriarch elephant, sable, impala and the list goes on.

"Please, we desperately need your help in the feeding and caring for the large number of animals in our care. Animals are being sent to our
Sanctuary almost weekly, with the cost of everything going up almost daily, we are in desperate need of some assistance. All the animals
within the sanctuary are there for a reason - they are orphaned, injured, former pets or problem animals and cannot be released back into
the wild.

"They are relying on us. All these animals require food, housing and veterinary care.

"Veterinary costs continue to increase on a monthly basis and basic flea and tick control is rapidly becoming beyond our means. Our major source of food for the herbivores is no longer operating at full capacity which means we are receiving less than half the amount of waste vegetables that we need.

"We have in the past been relying on donations of horses and livestock to feed our predators and this source is shrinking as the economic
situation worsens.

"We do have a sponsorship scheme in place for very lucky individual animals, however these only cover the cost of that one specific animal.
We still need to cover the cost of the other animals. We have put together a 'list' of essentials that we desperately need for the well-being of our animals.

"FRONTLINE (Spray or Spot-on - for Rolf the Cheetah) DOG DIP, FLEA POWDER, POULTRY DUSTING POWDER NAILS, WIRE, POLES DOG KENNELS, CRATES
(for shelters during the Rains)

"A SPONSOR FOR 3 ORPHANED PIGLETS - they require 2 litres of goats milk/day which we have sourced at $4000/lt

"A SPONSOR FOR 2 ORPHANED CALVES - they require 2 litres of cows milk per day which we have sourced at $3500/lt

"WASTE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES FERTILIZER LUCERNE AND MAIZE SEED WHEELBARROW, SHOVELS, HOES MOLASSES AND HAY AND LASTLY, BUT MOST
IMPORTANTLY - YOUR SUPPORT! Just by visiting our sanctuary on the Shamva Road you are helping us. We are only half an hour from Harare
and open every day except Mondays."

If you can help the Bally Vaughan Sanctuary in any way please contact them at : kkaye-eddie@origen.co.zw

"OF RICE AND MEN", by Jimmy Walker

111 pages. Illustrated. With excellent cartoons by Fusilier Norman Lambert, produced whilst in captivity. Softback £5.00 (cover price £10.00)

An irreverent, left of centre, look at life as a POW by Jimmy Walker, who was captured by the Japanese following the fall of Singapore in 1942. Jimmy takes us through incarceration at the notorious Changi jail, forced labour on the railroad, and deportation to Japan, where the Japanese exploited the mining skills of the boys from Northumberland. Norman Lambert’s sketches are both amusing and frightening at the same time. Through the bitterness and resentment, and physical trauma of captivity shines the humour and the indomitable spirit of the British soldier. An enjoyable and educational read, with a surprise ending.

Prices include p+p. Payment can be made by credit or debit card. To order on line, log on to www.paypal.com and enter postmaster@gcartwright.demon.co.uk as payment destination.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL

The Battle of Britian memorial is being set up by a group, headed by Lord Tebbit, that wants to put up a memorial to all those who lost their lives in the Battle of Britian. It will be opened by H.M The Queen on the Embankment, and will list the names of large donors. It is shocking to learn that there was previously no memorial to this great event. The memorial will list the names and nationaliites of those who gave their lives, and will recognise the sacrifice of Rhodesians and South Africans who died to keep these islands free. Help spread the word to all associate groups you may be in contact with, as the memorial is also there for Aussies and Kiwis and all the others members of the large Imperial family. People who wish to donate something should make the cheque out to 'Battle of Britian Memorial' and send it to Lord Tebbit at the House of Lords, London, SW1A 0AA.

CAN U HELP?

Julie Semin writes as follows :-

"I am a South African teacher in England. I wonder if you could help me at all?

"I am looking for work in London, a caring, supportive environment at present. I wonder if you know of anyone who would know of how to get hold of church schools, perhaps on the Internet? I would work part-time or at a reduced salary to start off with, again in teaching in London. Extra lessons or church youth-work with youngsters or holiday clubs might be a good idea.

"I have not yet found somewhere to stay. I can pay £450 a month, but need someone who has a garden for my cat. I would prefer a self-contained studio with a washing-machine to lodging in a double-room in a house. I have some furniture, i.e. need storage space, and parking space for my car. All this is a bit complicated. I am battling to find letting agents, to know which is a decent borough on a low budget. I have a British Passport. I seem to need lots of practical advice."

Unfortunately Julie does not appear to have an e-mail address, but she can be contacted either by post at : 25 Redwood Grove, Bedford, Bedfordshire, MK42 9NQ, or by 'phone on : 01234-344429.

Viv James writes as follows :-

"I am enquiring on behalf of my father if there is anyone around who served with 'C' Sqdn of the 6th South African Armoured Division in Italy during 1943. He also served with the Rhodesian Reg. in North Africa. My father would love to make contact. His name is Bob Stanbury."

MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN MONARCHIST LEAGUE

One of the greatest tragedies of modern-day Australia is the re-writing of factual history to accord to political correctness.

It is thus that the magnificent achievements of our Colonial pioneers are brushed aside in favour of a varnished yarn of a foul bushranger, but nowhere has political correctness been more active than in wrongly portraying and exploiting the tragedy that was the Eureka Stockade.

Eureka has nothing to do with a republic or anti-British sentiment. Rather it is the story of chaos and confusion caused by man's greed for gold. It is the story of the settlers' fear and the inability of an immature administration to cope with a massive influx of migrants. It is the story of the collapse of law and order, but above all, however, it is the story of how British law and justice eventually prevailed for the good of the whole against the mighty wills of individuals in a developing democracy.

The leaflet entitled "EUREKA - Be not misled! The Eureka Stockade has nothing to do with a republic or the Labor Party, but everything to do with the ultimate supremacy of law and justice under The Crown." It can be obtained from : secretary@monarchist.org.au

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

No.74 : Mr. ROGER SERVICE of Gillitts

Roger Service, from Gillitts near Hillcrest in Natal, was an early subscriber to S.A.Patriot. Born in the UK, he emigrated to South Africa at a young age, and after a successful career as a hotelier transferred to the thespian profession with SABC radio, starring in such acclaimed comedy series's as "The Navy Lark " and "The Men from the Ministry" produced at SABC's Durban studios. Married with a son and two daughters, he was a firm conservative, though alas his fatalistic attitude seemed to predict the fall of South Africa long before it came about. He talked seriously about re-emigrating to Australia during the mid-1980s, though it is somehow doubted whether this actually took place. Several of his former friends and acquaintances would be very keen to learn where he can be contacted now.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

HAIN IN THE BACKSIDE

Sir,

Just a line to say how sad I am that the British government stands idly by and watches Rhodesia slip away, but when you have idiots in power like Peter Hain then that says it all. Good Luck Rhodesia

Yours etc.,

Robert Campbell McAllister, U.K.

------------------------

MacARTHUR DOCTRINE

Sir,

May I take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate receiving your SCN's, and may the Springbok Club go from strength to strength.

The almost universal conspiracy of silence is maddening, but if it is confirmed that al-Qa'eda are secretly being given succour in South Africa, then something will have to be done.

Yours etc.,

Dr. Calum MacArthur, Essex, U.K.

CAPE CRUSADER

Sir,

Recently I sent an e-mail outlining the reasons we decided to leave South Africa, and my views on what seems to be happening there. This got me thinking about my family still living there and I made a few calls. What followed had both my wife and I in tears.

My younger brother went fishing with a longtime family friend Kobus Malherbe and his son a few months ago when they were attacked by 4 armed Black men. The men shot Kobus at point blank for not producing his car keys fast enough. His son, Gert, stepped in to catch his father's body and was pistol whipped. The next 2 hours saw the 2 of them beaten, kicked in the face and groin until the men were disturbed by more cars arriving at the river. They left but not before taking a few shots at them as they were driving off. They both consider themselves lucky???

My younger sister has been burgled several times in the past months and finally decided to install an alarm/panic button linked to a security firm in the area, even though she cannot afford it. Two days later she was woken by a sound in the house. Her husband is a fireman and was working nights and she was alone with her 3 year old son. She went to investigate and was shocked to find 2 Blacks in her house. One of them was armed with a machete the other had a pipe or crowbar. They told her they would kill her if she made a sound and told her to sit on the floor. They tied her hands and gagged her and she believes that they would have raped her if they had not been disturbed and eventually caught by members of the local neighborhood watch. It turned out later that they had been given the access codes for her security system by one of their friends working at the company that installed it. In fact, he was the person to install it!!!

Now, if so much has happened to our family, I can only begin to understand how bad things must be there for everyone else. I am starting to make preparations to move as many family members & friends out of that hell-hole as will come. I am going on a crusade to let people in the UK know what is going on and try to drum up support to help the people who, because of their beliefs, finances, or any other reason can not or will not leave the country.

Yours etc.,

Wilhelm van Tonder, Co.Durham, U.K.

------------------------

UNITY IS STRENGTH

Sir,

There are just horrible things going on all over the world. Do not lose it, fight it. That is all we have - the fight that we have within us. We are all the animals have. We must all stick together, help each other, and grow in strength and numbers. In addition to that, we must get the word out about all that is going on in Zimbabwe and South Africa. I am just stunned at the amount of people that have no idea of what is going on over there.

Yours etc.,

Gayle Hoenig, Colorado, U.S.A.

------------------------

TOP WOGS

Sir,

Of the 195 African Heads of State that were removed from their "thrones" since 1960, only 19 were done so by democratic political election. And the other 176? Through violent uprising!! That seems to be the "rule of thumb" in Africa where the indigenous people only understand one "language": Violence, kill or be killed - the law of the jungle. Once you are at the top, beat everyone else into submission, because if you don't they will gather their strength and kill you.

Yours etc.,

Johann Marx, Randburg, Transvaal

OBITUARY

It was with great sadness that we recently learnt of the death of Clem Tholet, the famed Rhodesian singer-songwriter.

Clem Tholet was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia, in 1945, and starting song-writing whilst studying in Durban. Upon moving back to Rhodesia he started singing at Rhodesia's first folk venue, "The Troubadour" in Salisbury's Angwa Street, where he formed a trio called "The Kinfolk". Later, after moving to Jo'burg, he formed another folk group called "The Legend Trio".

Clem Tholet married Jean Smith - the daughter of Ian Douglas Smith - in 1967, and at the same time began his solo singing career. He did a series of shows for RTV, and also presented a radio programme called "Folk on the Rocks" - the name coming from the folk club he ran at the "Beverley Rocks", where he played to packed audiences alongside such famous visiting stars as Spike Milligan and Jeremy Taylor. He also became a popular star of the annual "Bless 'em All" troop shows. Clem's first album, "Songs of Love and War", which he wrote and produced himself, was awarded a Gold Disk, and his second album, "Two Sides to Every Story" also proved a great success. In addition he also wrote and recorded the soundtracks to several popular Rhodesian films of the time, including "What a Time" and "Tsanga".

Clem Tholet served in the Rhodesian Intelligence Corps during the Bush War against terrorism, and it was during this period that he recorded his most famous number, "Rhodesians Never Die", which of course became the anthem of Rhodesian defiance.

After the fall of Rhodesia he moved to Cape Town, but his love and devotion to his country of birth never faltered to his dying day. He became an active supporter of the Flame Lily Foundation, and also contributed generously to charities supporting the plight of Rhodesian pensioners around the world.

Clem Tholet's continuing dedication to the Rhodesian cause right up until his death must therefore be an inspiration to us all. His memory should never be forgotten.
