February 2009 Edition.

SPRINGBOK CYBER NEWSLETTER

February 2009 edition
Southern Cross Africa News recently carried a very alarming report about the plight of that great South African patriot, Clive Derby-Lewis. It read as follows :-

"Clive Derby-Lewis has taken his battle to be set free to court, following the "New" South African prison service's about-turn on his parole.  The relevant parole board officially found Derby-Lewis to be eligible for parole, and even set a release date - but then suddenly held back when the Communist Party, part of the ruling regime, interfered and raised objections. Now Hani's widow, Limpho Hani, and her so-called right to lodge objections to his release, is cited as reason why the normal release process, applicable to any prisoner with Derby-Lewis's penal profile and age, must be delayed. No other case in South Africa's prison history is known of a prisoner's due release being made dependent on a widow's say-so. Derby-Lewis, now 72, was sentenced to life behind bars for the killing of the South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani, who, as leader of the ANC terrorist wing MK, was responsible for numerous terror attacks on innocent civilians in White-ruled South Africa.  The former Conservative Party politician Derby-Lewis, together with the younger Janusz Walus who pulled the trigger, has served 15 years of his sentence."

It should always be remembered that Clive Derby-Lewis was never charged with the actual murder of the terrorist Hani - simply that he allegedly provided the gun which Janusz Walus used to eliminate him. The evidence presented in court to convict Derby-Lewis was furthermore very dubious - to say the least - and consisted of little more than the fact that he knew Walus, and that Walus 'phoned him afterwards to boast about what he had done. His case wasn't helped either by the fact that his lawyers advised him not to give evidence in his own defence, and that someone else originally charged in connection with the killing, a certain Arthur Kemp, decided to turn State's Evidence, whereupon all charges against him were dropped!

[Bizarrely Kemp is now resident in the UK where he is evidently a leading official of the neo-fascist "British National Party" (BNP) - which surely says all that needs to be said about this highly sinister and unsavoury organisation!]

Clive Derby-Lewis was of course a leading office-holder in the Conservative Party, an MP, and the most articulate and charismatic English-language spokesman for the patriotic cause in South Africa. As such he posed a great threat to the ANC regime, and had to be silenced. There were many articulate Afrikaans-language spokesmen at the time who were galvanising the Afrikaner section of the White population to resist, but this the ANC knew they could handle - though if the English-speaking section were also prodded out of their apathy then it would be a completely different matter. This was why Clive Derby-Lewis was feared so much, and why the ANC concocted a plan to place him behind bars.

Shortly after Clive's incarceration - during the mid-1990s - our own movement decided to launch a "Release Clive Derby-Lewis Campaign" to try to influence the powers-that-be in the West to press the ANC regime to free this innocent man. We were however asked to abandon this campaign by a member of Clive's family who thought it could have a detrimental effect upon other attempts to procure his release through the "new" South African courts. We of course immediately shelved this campaign as requested by Clive's family, but now alas - over a decade later, and with the great man still languishing in prison - we fear that we may have made a mistake.

Judging from the report in Southern Cross Africa News the omens do not look bright for Clive's early release. We can only hope and pray therefore that somehow the ANC-regime can be pressurised into releasing this great patriot soon, so that he can see out his days in the freedom which he so richly deserves.

SPRINGBOK CLUB/ELC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Springbok Club/Empire Loyalist Club held a very successful 2009 AGM last month. There was a good turnout, reports by the Organiser, Treasurer and Branch Development Officer were presented (though the latter was alas not as comprehensive as hoped), and a new Executive Committee and other office holders for 2009 were elected unopposed. Once the business side of affairs was concluded Mr. Gary Cartwright gave a most illuminating talk about the current situation at the European Parliament in Brussels, and about the EuroSceptic cause in general. Although the accounts which he gave about the current state of the UK EuroSceptic movement was somewhat discouraging, developments reported from other EU nations seemed a lot more hopeful, particularly as a result of the successful "No" campaign in the Republic of Ireland.

SPRINGBOK CLUB/ELC TRIP TO GIBRALTAR

The Springbok Club/ELC has been invited to visit Gibraltar in order to witness the Freedom of the Rock being granted to the Royal Marines on Saturday 28th February. Although it is now alas too late to make a booking for this trip, we are happy to be able to report that a small party of SC/ELC members will be going, and that a full account of this visit will be appearing in next month's SCN.

------------------------------------------------------------------

FUTURE SPRINGBOK CLUB/ELC EVENTS

In Saturday 21st March 2009 the Springbok Club/ELC will be staging a meeting to be addressed by a prominent soldier who fought with both the RLI during the Rhodesian Bush War and subsequently with the SADF. Full details of this event will be given in next month's SCN.

In early April 2009 the Springbok Club/ELC will be holding a special buffet in order to celebrate Van Riebeeck's Day. The Guest of Honour at this event will be the UK representative of the PRAAG (Pro-Afrikaans Action Group) organisation.

In late May 2009 the Springbok Club/ELC will be holding their annual Empire Day celebrations, at which a prominent personality with strong Imperial connections will be Guest of Honour.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

The London Swinton Circle held their long-awaited Emergency General Meeting last month, which proved to be a highly successful and well-attended event. A new and full Executive Committee was elected, and an important motion was proposed and passed unanimously making it unambiguous that members of extremist political parties were neither allowed to become members of the LSC nor to attend LSC events uninvited. A discussion then took place concerning the position of Mr. Allan Robertson, the erstwhile Organiser of the LSC who had caused great problems for the organisation over recent months by a number of unfortunate unilateral and unconstitutional actions. As a result of these discussions it was agreed that Mr. Robertson should be expelled from the London Swinton Circle - though given 30 days to appeal against this decision. It was also agreed that two other LSC members who had been openly siding with Mr. Robertson's factionalism should be written to and given 30 days to explain their stance, after which it would be decided what further action should be taken against them - if any.

Once these problems had all been dealt with the meeting moved on to far happier matters. A provisional itinerary of high-profile guest speakers for the rest of the year was agreed upon, and more importantly the LSC accepted an invitation to attend a "Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Expression" event in Brussels.
This function, which is being staged by EuroSceptic members of the European Parliament, will take place on Thursday 19th February, and will feature both talks and musical items. Needless to say, it is a very great honour for the London Swinton Circle to be invited to such an important event, and confirms that in spite of all the problems which the organisation experienced last year as a result of attempts by extremist trouble-makers to infiltrate and wreck the movement its reputation has remained intact. Short notice though it now might alas be, if anyone is interested in attending this function please 'phone 07711188430.

NEW BRITAIN NEWS

New Britain staged a most successful Australia/New Zealand Festival to celebrate Australia and New Zealand Days last month. The festivities started at the statue of Admiral Arthur Phillip (the founder of Sydney and the first Governor of Australia) in the City of London where a wreath was laid and the Australian National Anthem sung. A large procession of over 100 (including 3 knights of the realm!) then proceeded through the City of London, led by the Cinque Ports Corps of Drums and flag-bearers carrying the flags of Australia and New Zealand, and including standard-bearers from the Royal British Legion, pearly kings and queens and "Britannia" with her escorts, to the ancient church of St. Katharine Cree in Leadenhall Street, where as service conducted by the Rt.Rev. David Farrer (an Australian who was Archdeacon of Melbourne and for 10 years the Bishop of Wangaratta) took place. This was followed by a reception in the adjacent hall, when a personal message from His Excellency John Dauth, High Commissioner of Australia, was read out. Alderman Sir David Brewer CMG, the 2006 Lord Mayor of London, and Lady Brewer were present, and Alderman Sir Michael Savory, the 2005 Lord Mayor of London and Chairman of the Admiral Phillip Memorial Trust, spoke about Admiral Phillip, and Sir Teddy Taylor, holder of the New Zealand Medal presented to him by the New Zealand Government, spoke about Captain Cook.

In order to celebrate St.David's Day (Sunday 1st March) the National Chairman of New Britain, Mr. Dennis Delderfield, will be visiting Cardiff on that day to place a wreath at the Welsh National War Memorial. After this solemn event a reception will be held at the near-by St.Mary's Church Hall. For more information please 'phone: 0207-2472524.

It has just been announced that the speaker at New Britain's 2009 Goldsmith Lecture will be Mr. Simon Heffer, the Daily Telegraph columnist. This event, which will be chaired by Sir Teddy Taylor, will be held on Thursday 10th September. Further details will appear in future editions of the SCN.

WORLD CUP WILLIES

A latest report which we have received from "Preparing South Africa for the World" (the official newsletter of the 2010 Soccer World Cup organising committee) is most revealing. Surely it is not too late to relocate the 2010 Soccer World Cup to somewhere safer? The report reads as follows :-

"The hideous attack on the Indian city of Mumbai [Bombay] has once again demonstrated that terrorism has no boundaries. And with the spotlight now shifting to South Africa as the hosts of the next mega global sporting event, concerns over this country's security have been raised. The Sunday Times warns that we must be vigilant: 'The 2010 World Cup will attract attention like no event in this country's history. We must be aware that international criminal syndicates and terrorist organisations have very likely factored us into their business plans.' There are, of course, no guarantees that South Africa will not become a target, but the South African Police Services deserve some credit for the initiatives that have been launched to help secure the host country - and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who are expected. Over the past couple of years, the SAPS has actively engaged with some of the top international law enforcement agencies, including Interpol and the FBI, to address issues like border control, terrorism and crowd control. The SAPS has budgeted R1.3 billion to safeguard the Confederation Cup and 2010 World Cup. Of this, some R660 million is being used to pay for new equipment including six Robinson R44 Raven II light helicopters, one Israeli water cannon, mobile command vehicles, 300 mobile cameras, 54 BMW patrol vehicles and French body armour. In addition, an estimated 40,000 new policemen will be on the streets within the next year to help secure all the host cities. There are also moves to facilitate the recruitment and training of crime prevention volunteers to assist the police during the tournament. In KwaZulu-Natal [sic], more than 3,000 volunteers have been recruited and trained as a community policing mechanism to help secure the province."

DIRECT ACTION AGAINST JAPANESE WHALE SLAUGHTER

We have recently been sent the following encouraging report from Gayle Hoenig from Colorado in the United States :-

"The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin departed the Port of Brisbane today with an international volunteer crew of 48.
"The crew includes 33 men and 15 women. 14 of the crew are from Australia and 4 from New Zealand with the rest of the crew hailing from Japan, Canada, Great Britain, the USA, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, Hungary, and Bermuda. 8 of the crew are representing Animal Planet for the documenting of the 2nd season of the series Whale Wars. The other 40 crew-members make up the crew for Operation Musashi. 23 of the crew are returning veterans and for the remaining 25, this is their first time on a Sea Shepherd campaign.

"Included in the crew that departed from Brisbane is Daryl Hanna, a long-time dedicated environmental activist and actor whose films include Blade Runner, Kill Bill, Roxanne and Splash.

"The Steve Irwin will make a brief stop for fuel before proceeding to the Ross Sea to intercept the Japanese whaling fleet. The Japanese whaling fleet is targeting 935 threatened Piked Whales plus 50 endangered Fin Whales in an established Whale Sanctuary in violation of a global moratorium on commercial whaling.

"'Our objective is to sink the Japanese whaling fleet - economically.' said Captain Paul Watson.

"The whales do not have time to wait until awareness is changed in Japan. The killing must be ended now and the key to success is to interfere with profits. Sea Shepherd intends to make sure that the financial losses of the Japanese fleet exceed their profits. This is the only language that the whalers understand.

"Musashi wrote of the 'two-fold way of pen and sword' and that means that confrontation plus communication is the strategy to be followed this year. Sea Shepherd will physically block the Japanese harpoons and we will be producing a dramatic television series to communicate the problem and our solution to the world.

"All Sea Shepherd tactics are designed not to cause bodily injury. Last year, the whalers accused Sea Shepherd crew of throwing 'acid' on them. While technically rotten butter is butyric acid, it is less acidic than beer or orange juice. But it does stink very bad and thus interferes with their work.

"The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society expects the Japanese to be more aggressive this year. They are losing money and their image as whale butchers is becoming a growing embarrassment. Last year the whalers threw concussion grenades and fired live shots at the crew of the Steve Irwin. We expect they will be more hostile facing another year of losses."

CAN YOU HELP?

We have recently received the following most intriguing message from the ORAFs cyber newsletter :-

"Penny Philip writes via Gary Albyn:-

"I'm working on finding out as much info' as I can on my reprobate great Grandmother 'French Marie' (Marie Victoire Baines/neé Lemestre), who was married in Umtali. This is an excerpt from an article I found on the internet:-

"MRS. MARIE VICTOIRE BAINES, 1893

"Neé Lemestre. Well-known as 'French Marie'. Was married in Umtali when the 1896 Rebellion broke out, but walked with several others to Salisbury laager, carrying her baby. Her first husband was Jack Baines, who died in World War I. Later she married C.F.Green, divorced him, and re-assumed her first husband's name.

"I'd be really grateful for any info' on this 'walk to Salisbury' (?!) and any clues on how to try to track down a possible marriage certificate - also any other info' anyone may have on her, or if you know anyone who may know!

"For those who do know of her, please don't worry about possibly offending my very delicate sensibilities - I KNOW she ran a number of brothels (which she oversaw with a sjambok), was the only woman in Gwelo allowed to drink in bars, gambled, was a good shot and an excellent horse-woman." [Sounds like my type of woman - Ed.]

"BETRAYAL IN HIGH PLACES" by James Mackay.
271 pages, some illustrations. Soft-back £5.00 including p&p. (r.r.p. £10.00)

The compelling story of what really happened in a defeated Japan following the end of World War II. Merchant seaman James Mackay, whilst travelling in the east, started to hear stories of massacres and other atrocities committed by Japanese forces, not just against enemy troops, but against innocent civilian populations. His subsequent investigations revealed reluctance amongst Allied governments to discuss these incidents that seemed to amount almost to a cover-up. Why would the Allies want to overlook the crimes of a former enemy, especially when the leadership of another former enemy was being liquidated at Nuremburg? Using his own research, as well as material prepared by Australian Army war crimes investigator Capt. J.G. Goodwin, Mackay exposes the cover-up and names the guilty. Not only were the Japanese keen to sweep the past under the carpet, but the US government of the time also had its own reasons for preserving the political and industrial elite in Japan. A provocative book, which calls into question the morality of US policy towards Japan after WWII.

The vivid and human details of her experiences, of her impressions and memories of the irascible and loveable war hero, take up the story of Churchill’s life at No. 10 where the BBC’s impressive drama, 'The Gathering Storm', leaves off — when Churchill took over the reins of Government at the outset of the war. Finally, the author, Elizabeth Nel, at 90 years of age and just before she died, looks back across the years.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

SOUR KRAUT

Sir,

It was unbelievable to read in last month's SCN how the notorious Arthur Kemp had evidently claimed that his father's family hailed from Gillingham in Kent. This was a lie on his part - or else he lied constantly during his period in South Africa, when he always claimed that his father was German who emigrated to Southern Rhodesia during the period between the World Wars, but who Anglisised his name during WWII in order to deflect any suspicions of pro-Nazi sympathies.

But why would Kemp claim that his ancestors came from Gillingham, of all places? Could the explanation be that he knew that one of his main bete noires and revealers of his phoniness was brought up in that town?

Yours etc.,

O. van der Westhuizen, Natal, South Africa.

ANOTHER ANDREW

Sir,

Andrew Slade [as mentioned in the "Meet the Fascists" column of the January 2009 edition of the SCN] - was that the bearded bloke in the row in front of me? Always struck me as a fruitcake.

COMET OVER THE CHILTERNS

Sir,

Thanks for the latest SCN.

The Comet Hotel is just down the road from my house. The large scale model of the red twin piston engine aircraft on the pole in front of the hotel is indeed a de Havilland aircraft "The Comet", and not a de Havilland Dove. The original Comet came out of the era of piston engine racing aircraft competing for amongst others, The Schlesinger Trophy, in the 1930s. I stand corrected, but I think this aircraft at one time held the trophy and the world speed record for aircraft. For a number of years a full scale replica of this aircraft was suspended from the steel arches of The Galleria shopping centre across the road from the hotel. The replica was recently removed and I do not know where it has ended up - probably in an aviation museum somewhere in the country. It is correct that the world's first commercial jet airliner was manufactured at the de Havilland factory across the road. The name Comet was resurrected for the airliner and came from the red piston engine racer commemorated by the hotel. The de Havilland factory in Hatfield no longer exists. de Havilland became part of the Vickers group which then became British Aerospace. As recently as the 1990s they were manufacturing the wings of one of the Airbus models at the plant. When the cold war ended in the early 1990s, British Aerospace rationalised their operations. Manufacturing and the airfield at Hatfield were shut down. The airfield has been sold off as a business park, a campus for the University of Hertfordshire, housing and vacant land which is hired out to the film industry down the road at Elstree studios. The sets of Band of Brothers and saving Private Ryan were built on this land. Many scenes were shot there and the sets were later dismantled. The only remaining buildings from the old aircraft works that can be seen are the local Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet which was once the gatehouse to the factory. The old drawing office has been incorporated into the new Hatfield Police Station HQ. Both these are listed buildings dating from the 1930s. A newer building, a large hanger and control tower, has been re-cycled into the Second Generation Health Club and Hotel.

Yours etc.,

ABD, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, U.K.

THE CURSE OF SPRINGBOK

It was with much delight that we recently learnt that the so-called "Conservative Democratic Alliance" outfit had been closed down.

As the anti-fascist magazine "Searchlight" once observed, the so-called CDA was neither Conservative nor Democratic, and it was often referred to as "the BNP without the jack-boots".

For some obscure and inexplicable reason those behind the CDA developed an irrational hatred for our movement, and indeed threatened to sue us for libel twice. Furthermore, three of the five unwelcome and uninvited attendees who gate-crashed and disrupted the London Swinton Circle meeting of 22nd July 2008, thus precipitating a crisis in the organisation, were known supporters of the CDA.

Needless to say, the champagne corks popped when we heard this glorious news - but our only regret is that we will now never know the reason why this obscure outfit developed such an inexplicable hatred of us.

OBITUARY

HELEN SUZMAN

Helen Suzman, who died last month, was one of the most controversial figures in post-WWII South African politics.

Born into a Jewish South African family, she alas succumbed to the regrettable knee-jerk reaction of so many Jews around the Western World following the Holocaust by viewing all "Right-wing" advancement as being "neo-Nazi" and therefore anti-Semitic.

In spite of this failing, however, as eventually the only PP/PFP MP in the South African Parliament, she somehow developed a curious mutual-respect relationship with Dr.Hendrick Verwoerd - in spite of their vast ideological differences. Even more strangely it was widely acknowledged that she treated her Black servants far more strictly than any NP cabinet minister would ever dare to do!

Had this obituary been written a decade ago then undoubtedly it would have been entirely negative. During the final few years of her life, however, Helen Suzman came to realise just how disastrous ANC rule had turned out to be - and was not afraid to say so. It is just a tragedy that she didn't comprehend the true nature of the ANC far earlier during her life, when perhaps - just perhaps - her strange mutual respect for Dr.Verwoerd may have helped preserve a civilised South Africa to the advantage of all its peoples.
