It is not often that we have cause to praise a French president – certainly not when he heads a socialist administration – but the recent action of President Francois Hollande in sending French troops to confront the threatening al-Qa’eda-aligned terrorists in Mali must be applauded.

There can surely be little doubt that expansionist fundamental Islam poses the greatest danger to Western civilization today. This threat may have been removed from Iraq (although perhaps only temporarily) and is currently being contained in Afghanistan, but the threat globally still remains – and Mali of course is nearer to the European heartland than either of these other places. For this reason urgent action was essential, and unlikely though it may have seemed, President Hollande proved up to the task.

But it is not only President Hollande who should be praised in this regard. David Cameron also proved willing to assist the French operation in a small way (though this most praiseworthy action seems to sit uneasily with Cameron’s apparent reprehensible determination to reduce British Defence spending at the same time!). Apart from Britain no other European nation gave any active support to France however, and more significantly no support whatsoever came from the EU as an entity. This surely confirms yet again that it is the great nation-states of Europe which still count in this world, and that the artificial European Union remains irrelevant on the global stage. The sooner it is consigned to the dustbin of history the better!

Also of great significance was the fact that – in spite of President Hollande’s silly comparison of the War against Islamic Terror with the post-WWII anti-colonial campaigns in Africa – the bulk of the Malian people regarded the French forces as liberators (despite them being a “neo-colonial” force to all intents and purposes!). This backing for Western intervention of course seems very similar to the support which British “neo-colonial” troops received from the Sierra Leonean people about a decade earlier.

It seems obvious therefore that the great European nation-states must increasingly be prepared to “take up the White Man’s burden” once again, not only in order to defend their own homelands against the renewed expansionist Islamic threat, but also in order to protect the well-being of the native peoples in their former spheres of influence. For France this means preparedness to intervene in all their former West African colonies. Britain, on the other hand, must look immediately towards its former colonies on either side of the entrance to the Red Sea – Aden and British Somaliland - where successionist movements from Yemen and Somalia respectively enjoy increasing support. Both these breakaway states should be recognized and Protectorate status given. Britain should also become more pro-active in Egypt, and likewise Italy in its former colonies of Libya and Somalia, and Spain should keep a watchful eye over Morocco.

But it is not sufficient for Western nations to confront expansionist Islam away from their own borders. Already there are frightening numbers of Muslims resident in Europe itself. Incredibly there are estimated to be over three million Muslims in France, over one million in the UK – and percentagewise even more in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, the Republic of Ireland and Spain! These people are all potential “Fifth Columnists” – as the 7/7, Madrid and Paris Metro atrocities committed by “home-grown” terrorists all confirm.

Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi may have been overthrown, and al-Qa’eda and the Taliban contained in Mali and Afghanistan, but all the time large numbers of Muslims remain in Europe then the War against Islamic Terror will not have been completely won. They must all be removed – bag and baggage.

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS

The Springbok Club’s 2013 AGM was held last month, and proved a most successful occasion. After the Organiser’s report and the Treasurer’s statement for 2012 were read Mr. Cliff Moore took over as temporary Chairman of the meeting, and the current Executive Committee were re-elected en bloc for 2013. There then followed some most interesting and fruitful discussions about the future direction and activities of the organisation.

Following the business side of affairs Mr. Gary Vincent gave another of his fascinating illustrated talks about the Battle of Rorke’s Drift. Following on from last year’s talk when he concentrated upon the part taken by Private George Comberton in the battle, this year he gave a detailed account of the fighting around the hospital – once again illustrating actions of the engagement with some well-constructed “war gaming” models. He also pointed out a number of historical inaccuracies contained in the otherwise brilliant film “Zulu”.

During the next few moths the Springbok Club is planning to stage a meeting to be addressed by a most interesting guest speaker, a day trip to a race meeting, and a visit to a picturesque private garden in Surrey. More details will be given in future editions of the SCN.

SPRINGBOK CLUB BRANCH NEWS

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club will be holding an informal social get-together shortly, the details of which are as follows :-

Date  :   Saturday 23^rd February 2013

Times : Throughout the afternoon and early evening (turn up at any time from approx. 13.00 hrs onwards)

Venue : THE BAT & BALL, 163 Old Dover Road, Canterbury (opposite the St.Lawrence Cricket Ground).

This informal gathering will give members and supporters the opportunity to meet up in a convivial atmosphere to chat and to plan future branch activities. It must be emphasised, however, that this get-together won’t be restricted to members and supporters from Kent, but that all supporters of the Springbok Club and their friends from around the country who can make the trip will be more than welcome. We have also arranged for the day’s Six-Nation Rugby matches to be shown on the big screens in the bar during the afternoon.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

During January the Swinton Circle participated in some special Australia Day activities organized by New Britain, and likewise in early February joined forces with New Britain in order to celebrate New Zealand Day. Full details are included in the “New Britain News” column.

On Tuesday 19th March the Swinton Circle will be addressed by a prominent hereditary peer, and on Tueday 23^rd April (St.George’s Day) by a famous national newspaper journalist. Later during the year the organisation will welcome as guest speakers a current DUP MP, a current UKIP MEP, a leading national security expert, a former prominent Conservative MP and leading officials from both a well-known EuroSceptic organization and a traditional cultural movement. More precise details will be given in future editions of the SCN.

NEW BRITAIN NEWS

New Britain’s Australia Day celebrations held on Saturday 26^th January proved a great and inspiring success. Commencing at the statue to Admiral Arthur Phillip (the founder of Sydney and the first Governor of New South Wales) in the City of London behind St.Paul’s Cathedral, a large contingent of supporters and expatriate Australians gathered to witness a short ceremony at which the Australian National Anthem was sung, a solemn prayer for Australia said, and wreaths laid on behalf of New Britain, the Swinton Circle and the Freedom Association. After the ceremony the Band of the Cinque Ports Corps of Drums led a march through the streets of the City of London to the Church of St.Sepulchre, followed by flag-holders bearing the flags of Australia and New Zealand, a contingent of Royal British Legion standard-bearers and the Pearly King and Prince of Finsbury, who marched off to the rousing strains of “Waltzing Matilda”! Once at the Church of St.Sepulchre an Australian reception was held at which the guest speaker was Mr. Rory Broomfield of the Freedom Association (who emphasized why Australia and the Commonwealth in general offered a far more logical and viable trading partnership than the artificial EU, and also told how Australia was one of the few countries in the world which had managed to withstand the global recession), and where the Australian National Anthem was again sung, and letters of friendship were signed to be sent to both the Australian Prime Minister and the Australian High Commissioner in London.

On Wednesday 6^th February New Britain held a similar day’s activities in order to celebrate New Zealand Day, at which the Swinton Circle was again asked to participate. The day’s activities started with a short march from Admiralty Arch down The Mall headed by a flag-holder bearing the New Zealand flag to the statue of Captain James Cook, where a solemn ceremony took place at which the New Zealand National Anthem was sung (English verse only!) and a wreath laid on behalf of New Britain. This was followed by lunch at the restaurant in the crypt of near-by St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and in the evening by a New Zealand reception at the Church of St.Sepulchre. At this reception an account of the life and career of Captain James Cook was read by Mr. Robin Willow of the Swinton Circle, New Zealand wine was drunk, the New Zealand National Anthem again sung and letters of friendship signed to be sent to both the New Zealand Prime Minister and the New Zealand High Commissioner in London. The guest speaker at this reception was Sir Teddy Taylor, the former Conservative MP for Glasgow Cathcart and Southend-on-Sea East, and a former minister in the Government of Margaret Thatcher, who also holds the New Zealand Medal for his services in fostering British-New Zealand friendship and trade whilst in Parliament. Sir Teddy gave a powerful and inspiring speech, in which he emphasized the links of heritage with New Zealand, and reminded everyone about how New Zealand had consistently supported and fought alongside the UK in every conflict during the nation’s history.

REPORT FROM THE ZIMBABWE CONSERVATION TASK FORCE

We have recently received the following very informative, though quite disturbing, report from the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (ZCTF) :-

“Whether it is due to greed, carelessness or just plain ignorance, the Zimbabwean authorities seem to turn a blind eye to the destruction of every aspect of the natural environment. Over 60% of our wildlife has been eliminated, millions of acres of trees have been chopped down, dry river beds have been damaged by gold panners and now, one by one, our precious wetlands are falling victim to this destruction.

“Harare's wetlands play a very vital role in providing the City's water source. Everybody is aware of the severe water shortages we have been facing and this is made worse by the destruction of the wetlands.

“Harare's major water source originates from the vleis and open green spaces around the city, many of which are now being destroyed by development, pollution and informal urban agriculture. A vlei is am important type of wetland. It is a low-lying, marshy grassland, covered with water during the rainy season, and even though it may seem to be dry during the winter season and droughts, it is actually storing water under the ground which it releases slowly into the streams and rivers.  

“The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources is apparently fully aware of the vital role of wetlands for Harare's future survival because the minister declared 26 of these areas protected. This was gazetted on 27th July 2012.

“Mr Ken Sharpe Jnr was contracted to build a new highway leading to Harare International Airport. The construction of the highway has been ongoing for quite some time now but the authorities are unable to pay Mr Sharpe for the work he has done. In lieu of payment, he has been given Warren Hills Golf Course where it is alleged that he plans to build a 5 star hotel. He has also been given the wetlands which constitutes about 21 hectares of land at the corner of Princes Road and Sherwood Drive in Meyrick Park. This has caused a huge outcry among conservationists because in conjunction with an International Christian Ministry and Kentucky Fried Chicken, he intends to build a conference facility and theme park. The servicing of this land will destroy the vital wetland. The conference facility will have a seating capacity of up to 10 000 and will include offices, a recording studio, bookshop and library. A sporting facility will also be constructed to provide recreational activities. Construction activities are confined to 3,6 hectares but the balance of the land, approximately 18 hectares will be converted to a theme park.

“In addition to this, Mr Sharpe has also been given the wetlands in Borrowdale behind Dandaro Village where it is alleged that he plans to build the biggest shopping mall in Africa in partnership with the International Christian Ministry and Kentucky Fried Chicken. 

“If these projects are allowed to proceed, it will mean the destruction of these very vital wetlands which supply precious water to Lakes Chivero and Manyame - in other words our drinking water. In addition to this, the wetlands support a wide range of organisms from aquatic invertebrates to fish, birds, reptiles and mammals. As usual, it is all about making money. If the Christian Ministry has enough money to partake in this construction, we wonder why they don't put their money to better use and help to feed the millions of Zimbabweans who are starving or improve their medical and educational facilities.

“Although the go-ahead for these projects has already been granted, the general public is quite entitled to object to this development taking place and we would like to encourage as many people as possible to email their objections to the Environmental Management Agency - ema@ema.co.zw. We need to guard any existing wetlands jealously because if these are destroyed, it will be a case of ‘no wetlands - no water.’ Let's all work together to keep our wetlands intact.”

Pauline Parker, originally from Cape Town, lived at Parsons’ Green in London during the early 1970’s. where she was a leading member of the expatriate South African community and a regular patron of the Zambezi Club in Earl’s Court. An extremely beautiful woman, she was in a relationship with an Afrikaner named Marais, though it is not known whether she ever married him, nor indeed whether she ever returned to South Africa. An old friend would be very keen to learn where she is now however.

HOLE IN THE DYKE

 

Sir,

I see from a letter published in “The Sunday Telegraph” of 3^rd February that Nikki Sinclaire MEP claims she will be fielding a slate of candidates for her “We Demand a Referendum Party” at the next Euro Elections.

Nikki Sinclaire was elected to the Euro Parliament in 2009 as a UKIP candidate for the West Midlands, yet within 12 months she had abandoned the UKIP whip and was subsequently expelled from UKIP following numerous complaints from members of UKIP’s West Midlands voluntary sector.

If she does succeed in fielding a slate of candidates for her ego-tripping “We Demand a Referendum Party” (a ridiculous name for a party, especially now that David Cameron has agreed to a Referendum!) out of personal pique against the UKIP leadership, then all she will do is to divide the anti-EU vote and allow more pro-EU candidates to be elected.

Clever, isn’t she.

CHINESE WHISPERS

Sir,

Interesting to learn that you too have suffered at the hands of the part-Chinese Mark “Chi Chi” Cotterill [January 2013 SCN - Ed.]. Don’t know anything about the American trouble-maker who you mentioned he was connected to, but I too suffered at the hands of this two-faced rat when he surfaced here in Blackburn a few years ago. No party would touch him because of his reputation, so he founded his own tinpot “England’s First Party” which I supported for a while. He got elected a councilor with Michael Johnson (part West Indian), but resigned a few months later as the job was beyond him, putting all the blame on Johnson and his other election workers. He then made lots of threats before being driven out of Blackburn to Preston. Incredibly he’s now tried to stand for Preston Council a couple of times, though failing miserably. Preston ain’t far from Blackburn, and news about what a two-faced rat he is travels fast.

OBITUARY

PETER VAN DER MERWE

It was with much sadness that we recently learnt of the death of Peter van der Merwe, the former Springbok Cricket captain, at Port Elizabeth aged 75.

Peter van der Merwe is best remembered as the captain of the 1965 South African side which toured England and who defeated England 1-0 in the three-match series. This was the last South African cricket tour of England during the era of civilized rule, and so therefore the final occasion when the tourists proudly bore the name of Springboks. The tourists were subjected to the early rumblings of left-wing kill-joy demonstrations, and as a result they gained heroic-status among British patriotic circles – with Peter van der Merwe himself becoming something of a cult-hero.

Peter van der Merwe, who was born at Paarl in the Boland, was primarily a middle-order batsman, and played initially for Western Province, before transferring to Eastern Province. Although only an average provincial batsman, it was as a superbly adroit captain that he made his mark, and which led to him being appointed vice-captain during his first tour (to Australia in 1963/64), and then captain of the 1965 tourists to England. Although this touring side bristled with batting mega-stars such as Eddie Barlow, Graeme Pollock, Colin Bland and Dennis Lindsay, Peter van der Merwe contribution with the bat should never be overlooked, and very often he would play outstanding inningses when the team was in the most trouble. It was his captaincy which proved his greatest strength however, as he engineered a decisive victory at Trent Bridge before an equally impressive draw at the Oval.

He retired from the active game shortly after this tour, but became heavily involved in the administration of the Eastern Province Cricket Union, wherein he held positions for several decades. Like alas so many South African sportsmen who had previously been so respected around the Western world for staying loyal to White South Africa in the face of extreme-leftist opposition, he was unfortunately prepared to remain in the “new” South Africa after the sell-out, and to continue life as if nothing had happened. He did however become heavily involved with the ICC rather than with the domestic “new” South African cricketing bodies, and indeed became a highly-respected ICC-appointed Test Match referee.

Our sincerest sympathies are of course extended to Peter van der Merwe’s second wife Rhoda (his first wife Margaret sadly died in 2002) and to his three sons..
