June 2002 Edition.

SPRINGBOK CYBER NEWSLETTER

June 2002 edition

One doesn't have to be in Britain for long at the moment to become aware of the overt upsurge in patriotism.

Union Flags and (in England at any rate) English Flags abound everywhere - on homes and in shop windows, and flying from cars, taxis and commercial vehicles. Although on the face of it this is for the double reason of celebrating the Golden Jubilee of H.M. Queen Elizabeth and England's soccer World Cup progress, it even so signifies the fact that far deeper patriotic sentiments have been aroused throughout the United Kingdom.

One group of British citizens who have clearly benefited from this upsurge in patriotism have been the people of Gibraltar, for the Gibraltarian Government has staged an effective and imaginative protest campaign against attempts by the Blair government to sell-out Gibraltar to Spain. A series of full-page advertisements in British newspapers have resulted in a massive response of support from the UK people for their Gibraltarian kith-and-kin - so great has been the response in fact that it has surprised even the Gibraltarian authorities themselves, and they have evidently been hard-pressed to cope with the sheer volume of messages of support.

The Gibraltarians have therefore shown clearly that they recognise the natural support for their kith-and-kin amongst the vast majority of British people in the UK itself. It is just a tragedy that the Rhodesians only vaguely understood this natural support from their kith-and-kin during the years of UDI - and the South Africans barely seemed to comprehend it at all.

SPRINGBOK CLUB "EMPIRE DAY" BUFFET-LUNCH

Held in a well-known central London club, the Springbok Club's recent celebration of "Empire Day" proved to be one of the most successful events ever staged by the organisation.

Although unfortunately ill-health prevented Springbok Club Chairman Peter Fisher from attending, the gathering was expertly chaired by his deputy Allan Robertson in his absence, and all in attendance were highly impressed by the sumptuous spread of buffet-snacks which were provided.

The Springbok Club was most honoured to welcome Mr. Jacques Arnold (the former MP for Gravesham, and junior Home Office minister) as Guest of Honour, and he certainly didn't disappoint. In a brilliant and indeed inspiring speech he outlined the history and development of the British Empire, and illustrated how it was originally based upon trade, and then went on to explain the great benefits which it brought to all its inhabitants. He concluded, however, by emphasising the importance of Gibraltar, and how it was vital that we all give our full support to the citizens of the Rock in their current plight against the attempted sell-out by the Blair government.

The Springbok Club was also most pleased to welcome Mr. Maurice Xiberras (a former Deputy Chief Minister of Gibraltar) to this buffet-lunch, and in a brief address he told the encouraging news of how the current Gibraltarian Government's campaign of action against the attempted sell-out had seemingly obtained success, as not only had the level of support from the UK exceeded all expectations, but it also now appeared that the negotiations with Spain had reached a stalemate, and were therefore to be broken off.

[Mr. Xiberras has agreed to speak to a joint Patriotic Forum meeting in mid-July, and full details of this event will be included in the next edition of the SCN.]

Supporters from Durham, Devon and Lancashire have also recently expressed interest in establishing branches in their respective areas, and it is hoped that these will all come to fruition in the near future. LONDON SWINTON CIRCLE MEETING

Details of the next London Swinton Circle meeting are as follows:-

Date : Wednesday 12th June 2002

Venue : Committee Room 15 of the House of Commons

Guest Speaker : David Burnside MP (UUP, South Antrim)

For those unfamiliar with the Houses of Parliament the procedure is as follows. Enter by St.Stephen's entrance, but do not wait in the queue for the Strangers Gallery. It is possible (though unlikely) that the Committee Room could be changed at the last minute, so ask for the Room of the meeting to be addressed by David Burnside, rather than its number or the name of any organisation.

David Burnside will speak on the themes "Alternatives to the Belfast Agreement; decommissioning; parades; policing and legal reforms; the ongoing attempts to denude Ulster of its British identity".

BOOK OFFERS

COVOS BOOKS of South Africa are specialist publishers of Africana, and offer a wide range of most interesting and illuminating books which will appeal to many of our supporters. Amongst the titles which they stock are:-

MAFEKING! by Malcolm Flower-Smith and Edmund Yorke
Psychologically affected by the fact that it was from Mafeking that the Jameson Raid was launched, the Boers determined to regain this key town. The exceptional military leadership, indomitable spirit and personal charisma of Col. Baden-Powell made him the ideal officer for the British defence - the source of inspiration for the defenders of Mafeking during the epic 7 month seize. By March 1900, the garrison was famished; death and destruction had become daily fare. When, in May, Mafeking was finally relieved, the British nation was swept by a wave of patriotic hysteria, unequalled since. Softback, 222x152mm, 214 pages, 50 b/w illustrations. R100.00.

HOW WE KEPT THE FLAG FLYING, by Donald MacDonald. Hard cover, 213 x 137 mm., 303 pages, with frontispiece and 7 illustrations and various diagrams. This enduring story of the Siege of Ladysmith is the first in a series of Anglo-Boer War reprints. Price R169.95.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

No.43 : Mr. CURTIS FULTON of Richmond.

Curtis Fulton came from a good "Imperial" family, his father, Stewart, being Canadian and his mother born in the UK - though both he and his brother (who was last known to be living in Walvis Bay) were South African born and bred. All the family were active in patriotic politics in the Durban area, though sadly Stewart died in the late 1980s. Although a fully-qualified civil engineer by profession, Curtis was last known to be running his own bee-farm in the Richmond area of the Natal midlands. We would be very keen to re-make contact with either Curtis or any of his family.

RECOMMENDED WEB-SITE OF THE MONTH

Although most people are aware of the total breakdown of law and order in the "new" South Africa, one of the most insidious manifestations of this anarchy is often overlooked, namely the escalating violence against women.

The "Rape & Violence Support Web-Site" is an excellent web-site which chronicles the violence against women in the "new" South Africa, and is well worth a visit. It can be accessed at:-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
---------------------

GOLLY!

Sir,

Whilst agreeing with some of your sentiments posted in the magazine [sic] I do take exception to one comment in the April edition in which you infer that Mbeki is better than Mandela. Whilst I have no time either for Mandela, who to my mind is the product of a public relations fraud, Mbeki is known by many people as a White hater, and apparently enunciated this in a TV programme in a Middle Eastern country - quite blatantly. I have also spoken to White police who he refuses to shake hands with. This would explain his reluctance to condemn Mugabe, as he I believe, in his heart of hearts, would like to follow Mugabe's example. And let us not forget that he is a Communist like his parents and spent time in the USSR where it would seem he did military training. Please do not try to white wash (unfortunate words) this Communist fraud.

Yours etc.,

Ann Phillips, South Africa

[Alas Ann Phillips completely fails to comprehend what we were trying to say in the editorial of the April issue of the SCN. Most people in the outside world are aware that Mandela is a convicted terrorist who was sentenced to life-imprisonment for his crimes, but far fewer know anything about Mbeki or his history, and indeed we have often heard comments to the effect that "at least Mbeki's an improvement on Mandela". It was our intention in this editorial to alert people to the fact that Mbeki was actually in the same league as Mandela and Mugabe therefore, and indeed what we actually said was "Mbeki MIGHT be an improvement on Mandela, but ONLY A VERY SLIGHT ONE" (emphasis added). The point which we were trying to make about Mbeki was therefore exactly the same point which Ann Phillips criticises us for allegedly not making! - Ed.]

ROGUES GALLERY

We would like to thank all those who supplied us with further information about Mr. Chas Lotter, the latest person who evidently thinks it "clever" to insult and defame complete strangers on the phoney "Rhodesia Yahoo Group". By all accounts Mr. Lotter has written a book of poetry about the Bush War; he certainly seems to a very odd method of generating publicity and increasing sales for his book therefore!

We have also recently received a number of copies of a very strange and incomprehensible e-mail, which although bearing the name of Robert Strickland has subsequently been discovered to have carried a false e-mail address, with the intention of causing any replies to be automatically transmitted to the "Rhodesia Yahoo Group". We have the suspicion therefore that "Robert Strickland" may be the pseudonym of one of the earlier trouble-makers who have been conducting vendetta campaigns against complete strangers on this phoney forum. Does anybody know whether any such person really exists?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

ZIMBABWE PET RESCUE PROJECT

There was much interest in the reports which we carried about the Zimbabwe Pet Rescue Project in the May edition of the SCN. Anthony LoBaido has contacted us to tell us about an article which he has recently written on this same subject for WorldNetDaily entitled "Mugabe's reign of terror extends to animals", which can be accessed at:-

http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=27551

[Be forewarned however, many of the details in this article make very harrowing reading.]

Finally, if you would prefer to be deleted from our "Springbok" mailing list then simply send us an e-mail with the word "unsubscribe" in it. Alternatively, if you liked this Cyber-Newsletter and think that any of your friends would like it also, then please let us have details of their e-mail addresses!

See you again next month!
