April 2010 Edition.

SPRINGBOK CYBER NEWSLETTER

April 2010 edition
Over recent years the town of Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire has engraved its name upon the British national consciousness by the dignified manner in which the loyal and patriotic citizens of that town have turned out to pay their respects to the returning bodies of the fallen national heroes killed in the War against Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not only have the various veterans' organisations such as the Royal British Legion honoured these fallen heroes by dipping their flags and colours as the corteges have driven past, but seemingly all of the town's citizens have expressed their solidarity as well.

Sickeningly, however, there was recently a plan by Muslim fanatics to stage a march through Wootton Bassett in support of their terrorist co-religionists who seek to destroy our Western civilisation, and who Western forces are currently combating. Happily this obscene plan was quickly stymied by massive grassroots opposition from British citizens throughout the country, but the question has to be asked why the authorities themselves didn't immediately step in to ban such an offensive insult - indeed one must ask why these same authorities allow these fifth-columnists to remain in the country at all!

On Sunday 14th March, however, a far different spectacle occurred in Wootton Bassett - an event which sadly didn't receive the publicity which it really deserved in the mainstream media. On that day a massive contingent of over 15,000 motor-cycle enthusiasts - an almost unheard of number for such an event - rode in procession through the town. By so doing (and they all made a financial contribution to a charity set up to aid the families of the fallen heroes) they were not only demonstrating their solidarity with the British and other Western armed forces fighting against international Islamic terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq, but also more specifically with the people of Wootton Bassett who have shown such inspiring patriotism.

It should be noted in this regard, of course, that these "bikers" are by very definition almost exclusively members of the younger generation - tomorrow's men and women and the future of the British nation. On the other hand those opposing the War against Terror, those who seek to appease Muslim fanatics both at home and overseas, tend to be members of an older worn-out generation (and how poignant that at much the same time two doyens of the pro-multi-culturalist Left - Michael Foot and Corin Redgrave - ended their days). They were yesterday's men, and their policy of appeasement towards Islamic expansionism has had its day.

On several occasions during the twilight years of his life the Hon. Ian Douglas Smith visited the UK, and in his speeches emphasised his optimism and confidence regarding the younger generation of up-and-coming Britons. They are of the same stock and calibre as former generations of Britons who built the greatest Empire that the world has ever known he reminded us all. He was right, and the recent displays of patriotism in Wootton Bassett can only increase our enthusiasm for the future.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

The Swinton Circle held a highly successful and inspiring meeting last month which was addressed by Mr. Frank Maloney, the famous boxing manager and promoter, and the prospective UKIP parliamentary candidate for Barking in the forthcoming General Election. Mr. Maloney gave a most enthralling address which was full of passion and wit, and in which he outlined his motivations for standing for parliament, and the promises which he pledges to the voters of Barking if elected. It was indeed a great honour for the Swinton Circle to be able to welcome such an honest and sincere patriot as guest speaker.

Details of the next Swinton Circle meeting are as follows :-

Date :  Tuesday 27th April 2010

Time :  assemble from 18.30 hrs., meeting to commence at 19.00 hrs.

Venue :  The PERSEVERANCE (the upstairs Function Room), 11 Shroton Street, Marylebone, London  NW1 6UG.

Guest speaker :  Mr. PAUL RHODES

Paul Rhodes was born in Derbyshire. His family history is one of farming in the Trough of Bowland, Lancashire, and goes back to the 1500's. He was an engineering apprentice in the telecommunications industry, and that work took him all over the UK and into every kind of industry. He became involved in exporting in the 1960's, working for a London-based radio communications company, where his work then took him all around Western and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. His UK company successfully competed against all European competitors, and so he had no hesitation in voting NO in the 1975 referendum on the UK's continuing membership of the Common Market. In 1975 Paul joined his first Canadian company, Northern Telecom, where he was responsible for business development in the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent. Again the work took him into every kind of industry and required him to work at high level in government and industry. In 1978 he met Osama Bin Laden in Jeddah, his company supplying the telecommunications systems for Saddam Hussein's palaces in Baghdad. 1978 found him working in the Shah's Iran just before the revolution, and he went back there again in 1992 just after the first Gulf War. Paul has worked for three Canadian companies, they being based in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. He has also worked in the charity sector, for example for the Red Cross. In 1978 he married a girl from Vancouver and has been visiting Canada for the past 36 years, and in September 2008 moved permanently from London to Sechelt in British Columbia. Paul will be giving an overview of Canada and the changes he sees now taking place. Canada is the second largest country on Earth and has grown rich on its natural resources, however major changes are afoot. Canada, just like the UK, is becoming, and to some extent has already become, a "multi-cultural/multi-faith society". Immigration levels are amongst the highest in the World, whilst at the same time unemployment is running at around 8.5%. Paul will examine some of the challenges that Canada is now facing. The Canadian political system is modelled on that of the UK and so many of the issues are the same, however there are significant differences and Paul will look at some of them.

[One of our supporters has reported receiving a request to renew his membership to the "London Swinton Circle" from Mr.Allan Robertson. Mr.Robertson was of course expelled from the Swinton Circle in January 2009 for gross misconduct, so therefore no longer has any connection to the organisation. We are uncertain whether his inclusion of the discarded prefix "London" prior to the Swinton Circle's name in this apparent act of deception makes it more difficult to take action against him for breach of copyright, but enquiries are taking place. In the meantime if any other supporter receives any material from Mr.Robertson or from a private P.O.Box address in south-east London claiming to be from the "London Swinton Circle" then we would ask them to disregard it and to inform us of the details immediately.]

REPORT FROM THE SANWILD WILDLIFE SANCTUARY AND TRUST

As South Africa prepares for the World Cup there is a more sinister side to the country. It is anticipated that tourism and soccer supporters will flock to South Africa in their hundreds of thousands, the sighting of an African lion will be high on their list of "what to see". Sadly very few people will be told about the terrible horrors facing almost 6000 lions held in the sordid canned lion breeding and hunting industry. Many of the visitors will hold a cute lion cub and will return home proudly showing off their photographs in which their hearts warmed to Africa's King of the Beasts. What they will not know and what is highly likely, is that in actual fact it is guaranteed that the cute cub in their photograph will eventually die a horrible death.

Watching a television screening of the Cooke Report in 1997 in the United Kingdom and subsequently in South Africa by Carte Blanche most animal lovers and decent people across the globe where appalled and disgusted when they found out that in a stunning country like South Africa the King of the Beasts where bred like broiler chickens to be gunned down by so-called ethical hunters. Since then this terrible industry has grown from strength to strength in South Africa. Only 4 years ago an average of 400 captive bred lions were gunned down by hunters, last year an alarming 1200 lions were killed in legal and illegal hunts.

For those of you who do not know what canned hunting is; it is the breeding in captivity of large predators with the only purpose of killing them in a "trophy hunt" when the animals reach an average age of about 5 years. Trophy prices paid for male lions are much higher than that of a lioness. Hunting prices range from about R220,000 up to a million rand for a full-maned white lion. In South Africa a number of breeding projects exist and some of them can hold as many as 400 lions in a single breeding project.

Although many international and local animal welfare and rights groups have lobbied against canned hunting, SanWild remains the only registered animal welfare charity that cares for lions confiscated from illegal breeding projects and intended hunts, but this has by no means been a walk in the park. The costs to feed the three lion prides for 2010 totals R620,500.

With no governmental support, and as much as possible support from the Foundation Brigitte Bardot, SPA (France) and the Humane Society International, it has remained an uphill battle to cover the huge costs of ensuring the safety and welfare of three prides of African lions. SanWild has received no additional support from the many other animal welfare organizations who lobbied actively against the canned lion hunting industry.

In 2009 SanWild issued a press statement to inform our supporters, NGO's and the public that should we fail to raise sufficient donor funding to continue to feed and care for three prides of lions, we will have no other option than to put 16 healthy lions to sleep.

You may very well ask why SanWild does not attempt to find other destinations to where at least some of the animals could be relocated to help ease the financial burden. For 5 years we attempted to find safe and secure homes for the lions in particular, but most possible opportunities lead to a dead-end when potential foster parents were told that they may not breed, commercially trade of hunt any of the SanWild lions.

During this time we found one individual who had agreed to sign a foster parent contract to ensure the lions' welfare and accepted all the terms and conditions contained in a legal document draw up specifically to ensure the animals' safety. However when we found a suitable foster parent our local conservation department in Limpopo Province [Far North Transvaal] refused to issue the required export and transport permits to Gauteng Province [the PWV area], resulting in the failure of the intended relocation.

It is now almost a year later and we are happy to report that with God's saving grace and with the help and support of various private donors, companies and the Foundation Brigitte Bardot we have managed to continue to care for the lions.

Our meat supplier also agreed to supply meat for our lions on credit for times that we ran short of funding. He has also gone out of his way to ensure that he could supply meat at a much cheaper rate by discarding his own profits.

To all and everyone who contributed and helped we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We are now standing at the beginning of yet another new year, but the danger to the very lives of the SanWild Lion Prides remain - if funding cannot be secured to continue to take care of them the horrible reality of putting them to sleep remain. Sadly SanWild simply does not have access to adequate funding to feed the animals without your financial support and help.

One cannot but help putting your heart and soul into loving and caring for these majestic creatures; their amber eyes, their strong vibrating voices, mighty roars and their love for the rest of their pride members is something that remains in one's mind and one cannot but wonder how it is possible for anyone to pump these beautiful creatures full of bullets simply to have a trophy and brag about how you killed a lion in Africa. Once life has passed from their bodies and the glow has left their yellow eyes, no beauty remains; only the horrible realization that all pride and strength have gone and only death remains.

For us the lions have always been an inspiration, but hearing their mighty roars in the middle of the night or in the early morning before sunrise, somehow always fills one with sorrow. Sorrow that these creatures can never regain their freedom as they are too habituated to man and because SanWild as a sanctuary is simply not large enough to allow for the release of all 16 lions.

Despite this sorrow we have seen the individual lions pretty content and happy with their large natural habitat enclosures. In a country that has become an extremely dangerous place for all lions - captive bred or wild, we realize that this is the best we can possibly hope to give them for now. As long as they have their families, good food and peace and quiet it certainly goes a long way towards giving them quality of life. Hopefully one day we will be able to secure safe foster homes where the lion prides can be returned to the wild. Daily new reserves are being established and it has always been our intention to release any of the prides to suitable foster homes. Maybe one day their "fairy godmother" will waive her magic wand and make all their wild dreams come true!

BOOK REVIEW by Mark Taha

South Africa's Brave New World: The Beloved Country since the end of Apartheid - R.W.Johnson (Allen Lane, 2009)

I highly recommend this book - I didn't spot many errors for one thing. However I really want the author to elaborate on his claim that Mugabe knew about 9/11 in advance.

Johnson is a veteran South African liberal, a former ANC supporter and excellent writer. His latest book, dealing with South Africa since 1994, is the work of a man who believes that apartheid was wrong but its successor hasn't been right. There have, of course, been quite a few like that. Of course, I don't want to gloat - the hell I don't!

He writes of a country beset with corruption, incompetence, cronies appointed to power, exhibiting "many features of a giant Bantustan." Their MPs are even more corrupt than ours!

On the credit side civil liberties have improved, the old censorship has gone, welfare payments have been equalised. Finance Minister Trevor Manuel and Revenue Chief Godlan [I think] did competent jobs, the latter by ignoring affirmative action.

On the debit side, everything else seems to have got worse. Things were better run under the old regime.
Whatever its failings - and I was never pro-apartheid, believe it or not - living standards generally rose, mortality rates fell, schools were built and taught their pupils. The old regime's failure to create a sufficient Black middle class to take over does not excuse the failures of the new rulers - for instance the old police and prisons were hard but generally fair. Today, they're just hard. Prisons, deaths in custody and crime have got worse - some Ministers' memories seem rather short. Recently-deceased Health Minister Tshabalala-Msimang believed in treating HIV with beetroot rather than ARV drugs. In 1997 the Public Service Act was amended because it was "imperative to get rid of merit as the overriding principle in the appointment of public servants." Far too many people in authority seem to have had no grasp of economic realities and to be as obsessed with race as the old verkramptes.

Of the Presidents - Mandela did an excellent job of reconciliation. However he was the servant of the ANC. With his prestige, popularity, and charisma he could have taken tough decisions and made them stick - but didn't. Most of the time he was the ceremonial monarch to Mbeki's de facto Prime Minister.

Mbeki's finest hour was the sensible GEAR economic policy of 1996 - it was downhill from then on. As for Zuma, Johnson compares him to Funamali (want-money), the populist leader who ruined South Africa in Arthur Keppel-Jones's "When Smuts Goes." I urge all South Africans who give a damn about their country to re-read it and heed the warning!

I'll close with two quotes - the first from Johnson: "It is painful to have to acknowledge that the racists over predicted the future better than we did" - ironically, Mbeki had Afrikaner bodyguards, and a lot of old racists and rich men "in" with the old government have got on well with the ANC. The second from the late HNP leader, Jaap Marais: "The rich will be able to buy their apartheid." Was he wrong?

RHODESIAN LIGHT INFANTRY DVD

The Rhodesian Light Infantry Regimental Association in the UK (part of the world-wide RLI Regimental Association) has recently had a series of films on a single DVD created which tell the story of the Rhodesian Bush War, as seen through the eyes of the men who fought in it. This is a new set of films which are not in anyway related to those that have been around for a number of years, and the proceeds are to be used to maintain our Troopie statue, smuggled out of Zimbabwe, as well as the creation and maintenance of an RLI
museum.

WORLD CUP WILLIES

A recent edition of "Project 2010 - Preparing South Africa for the World" (the official circular of the 2010 Soccer World Cup Local Organising Committee) makes very revealing reading, this time reporting on major concerns over local ticket sales. It reads as follows:-

"The 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) has acknowledged that the ticket-purchasing process is too complicated and has contributed to the poor sales in South Africa. LOC chief executive officer Danny Jordaan last week noted that fewer than 100,000 tickets have been sold to fans in the six African countries competing in the finals. He was particularly worried that few local fans were buying tickets for Bafana Bafana's Group A matches against Mexico, Uruguay and France. However, the few South Africans who have credit cards and internet access have had to contend with a complicated application process on FIFA's website, and the rest have to stand in line at First National Bank.

"SAFA is so concerned about the poor sales for Bafana Bafana that they plan to embark on a campaign to mobilise South Africans to embrace the team. 'We need to create a vibe in South Africa for the World Cup,' said new SAFA chief executive Lesley Sedibe. 'We need to make sure that our people rally behind Bafana Bafana. The first thing we need to do is to identify what the challenges faced by our people are regarding the issue of tickets.' The Sowetan reports that the SAFA chief executive said he was disappointed that most World Cup tickets bought in South Africa were for teams like England, Germany, Italy and Argentina."

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

No.137 :  Mr. LINCOLN ROBINSON of Midrand

Lincoln Robinson was a long-standing supporter of ours who was still based in South Africa itself. Recently e-mails we sent him started to be "bounced", and a subsequent letter which we wrote to his last known Midrand address was also returned. Does anyone know where he can now be contacted?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

QUEEN TO PAWN ONE

Sir,

Does everybody realise that everyone who has been knighted since 1972 [the date of the Royal Assent to the Accession Treaty to the Common Market], has not really been knighted at all, because you need a 'real' Queen to do that, and she has actually been a 'traitor' since 1972. A 'traitor' has NO authority, and certainly does not have the power to bestow knighthoods.

Yours etc.,
Michael Stuckey, Wessex, U.K.

----------------------

SMELLING A RAT

Sir,

It's been interesting to note the problems which you've been experiencing from Albert Weidemann. You've also been attacked by the BNP I believe. Could Weidemann be a sleeper for the BNP I therefore wonder?

Yours etc.,
H.Butler, London, U.K.

[Very doubtful. Weidemann professes to be a supporter of the Liberal Democrat Party. A very strange choice for an ex-Rhodesian serviceman however, given that the leader of the Liberal Party at the time of UDI, Jeremy Thorpe, advocated bombing Rhodesia! - Ed.]

----------------------

KICKING SOME IDEAS AROUND

Sir,

Regarding the Football World Cup 2010: Would it not make sense to join forces with other organizations that have raised their concern about this tournament being held in South Africa? A united voice would be far more effective that the fragmented collection of ex-pat and concerned resident web-sites and publications that exist at present. I know that an e-mail campaign to FIFA was mobilized by the now defunct RSA-Overseas site. True to form FIFA responded with the "all is well and the tournament will proceed in South Africa" platitudes. If all these warnings could be assembled on a single site/document and then be circulated to the western media - and in particular the British press - no-one can ever say that "We did not know". Sepp Blater and FIFA will have to be held accountable.

Another approach to take is to say no more. The warnings have been offered in good faith. They have been ignored. Whatever will be will be. Let the West wring its hands in angst if the predicted failure does materialize.

Elsewhere I read that the tourist authorities in Port Elizabeth are concerned that so far they have received NOT ONE accommodation booking related to the tournament. It could be that the word on crime and poor security is out and that the whole event could turn into one big damp squib. We do not have crystal balls and must now just wait and see.

Yours etc.,
A.B., Hertfordshire, U.K.

ROGUES GALLERY

Probably the most obnoxious and revolting comment which we have ever seen on an Internet discussion forum was recently posted on "The Voice of Reason" forum by a certain Andrew Slade, in which he stated (regarding the proposed march by the Islamic fanatic Anjem Choudary through Wootton Bassett): "I would love to march WITH him at Wootton Bassett in protest against British war crimes in Afghanistan from 1838 to the present day and ongoing" (http://thevoiceofreason-ann.blogspot.com/2010/01/why-bnp-should-support-choudarys.html). This Slade character is unfortunately well known to us. He mysteriously started attending Swinton Circle meetings a few years ago, before being quickly barred not only because of the lunatic and insulting nature of his questioning of guest speakers, but also because it was revealed that he was a member of the neo-fascist British National Party (BNP) - indeed he stood as a BNP candidate in the Epping Forest Council elections of 2007. Slade was furthermore one of the five uninvited and unwelcome gate-crashers who tried to cause trouble at the problematic Swinton Circle meeting of 22nd July 2008. Slade's pro-Islamic and anti-British views are not as surprising for a member of the BNP as many naive people may believe, for the BNP's official policy is to oppose their own country in the War against Terror in Afghanistan - surely only a small step away from Slade's overt support for Islamic expansionists. Yet further proof therefore that the so-called BNP is phoney, phoney, PHONEY. It is the LAST party which any self-respecting patriot should vote for at the forthcoming General Election!

OBITUARY

WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL

It was with great sorrow that we recently learnt of the untimely death of Winston Spencer Churchill. In many ways Winston Churchill was cut from the same cloth as his illustrious grandfather, Sir Winston Churchill. Both were true and sincere patriots who were not afraid to oppose the prevailing wisdom ("political correctness") of their times - in the case of the former against appeasement towards Germany, and in the case of the latter against non-White immigration. Whether it was because his forthright advocation of what he believed to be right, or whether it was because his decent from his illustrious grandfather proved a double-edged sword, the fact remains that Winston Churchill never achieved the high office which he so richly deserved and warranted. Towards the end of his years Winston Churchill devoted his life to supporting the UK National Defence Association - an organisation with which the Swinton Circle has managed to establish good links (indeed it was being planned for Winston Churchill to address the Swinton Circle at the time of his unexpected death). Our sincere sympathies are extended to Winston Churchill's family, and also to officials of the UK National Defence Association who have lost a stalwart champion.
