There has always been “something of the night” about the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, something unsavoury which doesn’t seem to apply – certainly not to the same extent – to other outdoor music festivals such as Reading and Leeds. The underlying reason for this sinister aura is undoubtedly because of its close association with extreme-Leftist political causes.
The festival is held on the land of a retired dairy farmer by the name of Sir Michael Eavis, who several years ago decided to turn part of the land on his Worthy Farm, near the village of Pilton in Somerset away from its usual agricultural usage, and into a site for contemporary music and other performing arts. Eavis is a very controversial person – to say the least. Unusually for a farmer from traditionalist Wessex he holds extreme socialist views. Once a keen member of the Labour Party (he stood spectacularly unsuccessfully for the Labour Party in the Wells Constituency at the 1997 General Election, finishing third with only 18% of the vote) he deserted the Labour Party for a while because of its perceived Rightwards shift and then flirted with the Green Party, before returning during the Miliband/Corbyn era. His political stance was even more extreme-Leftist than mainstream Labour however, as he opposed the West’s War Against Terror in Iraq and is an avid supporter of the treacherous Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).
It is not surprising therefore that under Eavis’s tutelage the Glastonbury Festival became a vehicle for extreme Left-wing causes. For a while it acted as a fund-raiser for the perfidious CND, a stage was named after the deceased Left-wing ideologue Tony Benn, and in 2017 Eavis himself introduced the unspeakable Jeremy Corbyn to the gullible crowds. But in 2025 the odious nature of the festival reached new heights, and included expressions of open pro-terrorist sympathies which all decent people must surely deplore.
Among the acts who performed this year were two bands who can only be described as evil. Firstly there was the notorious “Kneecap”, an extreme Irish nationalist grouping whose very name glorifies one of the most sadistic terrorist practices perpetrated by SF/IRA. Their lyrics, albeit mainly in Irish Gaelic, wreak of anti-British venom, but their hatred doesn’t end there as they have also sickeningly identified themselves with the Hamas terrorists! The other depraved act on display at Glastonbury this year went under the disgusting parody name of “Bob Vylan” (thus vilely insulting the great folk singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, who of course is himself part-Jewish!), whose lyrics not only conveyed repulsive anti-British sentiments, but who also openly called for the murder of Israeli Defence Force members. Quite clearly the authorities must act to prosecute these two incendiary anti-British and anti-Semitic practitioners, and to prevent them ever performing in Britain again.
But there is another quite disturbing aspect about the entire Glastonbury Festival, and that is its very name. Glastonbury is a beautiful and historic British town which furthermore has great spiritual significance and associations which date back to well before the Roman era – indeed dating back to the very beginnings of the British people. Was the name of Glastonbury deliberately chosen as an act of sacrilege against everything which is truly British we therefore wonder – especially as Glastonbury is not the nearest town to the Pilton site: it being far closer to both Shepton Mallet and Wells? We therefore call upon the authorities to put an end to this degenerate spectre, so that not only can Worthy Farm revert to its true agricultural purposes, but also so that the very name of Glastonbury can be restored to its historic and spiritually-enlightening status!

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS
The Springbok Club staged a trip to Petersfield in Hampshire last month in order to watch and support the annual parade of the Grand Orange Lodge of England through the town. Petersfield is chosen as the venue for this, one of the largest annual parades in the south of England by the Orange Order, because a majestic statue to King William III – William of Orange of glorious memory – stands in the town, and it is here where the parade stops to lay floral tributes and to pay respects, before proceeding to the town’s War Memorial where further respects are paid and then heading for Petersfield Heath where a service is held. Although the Orange Order is strongest in Ulster, the West Coast of Scotland and Liverpool and certain other northern English towns and cities, it does still enjoy significant – and evidently growing – support in the South of England. The Springbok Club party who watched this year’s parade and ceremonies certainly found it a most inspiring event!

On Sunday 20th July some members and supporters of the Springbok Club plan to watch a Cricket match featuring a team which the organisation has very friendly connections to. In August the Springbok Club with again hopes to be welcoming Mr. Geoff Hill as guest speaker, who will be giving a further report-back about the current situation in South Africa. During September however the Springbok Club will be honouring its promise to the late, great Peter Sladden by maintaining the annual “Raising of the Flag” ceremony, which this year will be held in Oxfordshire. More precise details about all these events will be given in future editions of the SCN.

PATRIOTIC FORUM NEWS
Following a short break, the Patriotic Forum will be resuming activities later this month with a most important and topical meeting where we will be welcoming representatives from the Chagos Islands - the British Indian Ocean Territory - who will be telling us something about the history and ecology of their islands, and their struggle to remain a British territory and to resist their attempted sell-out to Mauritius, a cause which we of course support greatly. The Cheshire Cheese is then right in front of you. Enter the pub via the right-hand door, then proceed up the stairs straight in front and into the upstairs function room.
A number of Chagos Islanders will be present to tell us something about their islands and their campaign to remain a British territory, including Mrs. Vanessa Calou, the co-head of the British Indian Ocean Territory Citizen's Forum and Mr. Lonny Bellefine, a leading representative of the British Indian Ocean Territory Citizen's Forum.

MESSAGE FROM THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION FOR ANIMAL PROTECTION
We have recently received the following disturbing message about the vile donkey skin trade in Africa from the International Organisation for Animal Protection. It reads as follows :-
“Hundreds of thousands of donkeys, mostly from Africa, are slaughtered annually and their skins exported, causing donkey population across the continent to decimate. The donkey skin trade is a cruel and largely unregulated international trade driven by the demand of skins from China used to prepare a traditional medicine (TCM), called ‘ejiao’, a gelatin produced by boiling donkey skins and sold as a powder or gelatinous block that can then be made into tea.
“The trade is said to have led to mistreatment of donkeys in different parts of the region. It has also caused suffering to donkey owners as this has pushed them deeper into poverty and misery with the loss of the animals from livestock theft. It is worth noting that most donkeys stolen and slaughtered in the region are taken from families who depend on them for their livelihoods.
“It is also very important to push for a ban on the commercial slaughter of donkeys as the trade in donkey meat and hides is growing at a very fast pace. The skin trade is gradually penetrating into the community. In just two weeks over 30 donkeys were killed in Tchabawol, a village in Bogo municipality in the Far North Region of Cameroon.”

THIS YEAR’S BRITISH LIONS TOUR
As always this year’s British Lions (and we emphasise, as we’ve done in the past, that the correct name is the British Lions, and not the politically correct title of the “British and Irish Lions” – Ireland, all of Ireland, is just as much part of the British Isles as Scotland, England and Wales!) tour of Australia has generated great interest amongst sports enthusiasts around the world. Competitive matches played by a united British Team is after all the pinnacle of Rugby Union excellence and achievement.
Much controversy has arisen this year however by the fact that a high number of “foreigners” – South Africans, New Zealanders and South Sea Islanders - have been selected for this year’s Lions’ squad. All these players have played previously for their respective Home Nations sides of course, and have therefore clearly met all the approved international qualification criteria. If there is a fault involved it is therefore clearly with the current international qualification rules, and not with the British Lions’ selectors.

BARBARIC CATTLE MUTILATION SHOCKS THE ORANGE FREE STATE
A supporter still based in the “new” South Africa has recently sent us a most disturbing report issued by the Transvaal Agricultural Union (SA) which clearly demonstrates the descent into primeval savagery which alas now pertains in that unfortunate land :-
“Following the shocking footage of 12 cattle that were gruesomely mutilated and slaughtered early on Wednesday morning, TLU SA is making an urgent appeal to farmers in the Goldfields area to work together and strengthen security structures.
“This crime, which took place on the farm of Edrich Wille between Ventersburg and Virginia, follows similar attacks on other farms in the area on 24 and 30 August, allegedly by the same cattle thieves.
“TLU SA Free State strongly condemns this barbaric act and will closely monitor the developments. ‘We are determined to work with other agricultural organisations to curb this horrific crime and will do everything in our power to hold the perpetrators accountable,’ says Bertus van der Westhuizen, regional chairperson of TLU SA Free State.
“’It is disturbing that such cruel criminals are still roaming free, and the public has reason to be concerned about their safety. We call on the authorities to act decisively and ensure these criminals are swiftly put behind bars. The laws violated here, including trespassing, animal cruelty, cattle theft, and trading in stolen goods, must be strictly enforced, and the culprits must receive harsh sentences,’ says Van der Westhuizen.
“The scale of cattle theft and these barbaric attacks has a significant impact on agriculture and the broader economy. In June alone, more than R9 million worth of livestock was stolen. These mutilated cattle were valuable breeding stock, and the farmer has not only lost his livestock but also his future production.
“’We extend our sympathies to the farmer and will continue to take all possible steps to ensure that the offenders are not only held accountable but remain locked up for as long as possible,’ Van der Westhuizen concludes.”

TWO-TIER JUSTICE
We have recently been made aware of the following most interesting and well-analysed report about the apparent two-tier justice system which prevails in the UK today, which was issued by the Civitas organisation, and then re-circulated with a forward by Baroness Fox by the Academy of Ideas :-
“Civitas has just published a new report by Hardeep Singh, The Many Tiers of British Justice: When identity politics and progressivist causes trump impartial policing. Hardeep is a freelance journalist, deputy director of the Network of Sikh Organisations and assistant editor of The Sikh Messenger. The report is hugely important, and I was very happy to provide a foreword for it, which is reproduced below. You can download the report from the Civitas website.

“On 5 March this year, the Sentencing Council – an unelected quango set up in the Gordon Brown era – published the revised Imposition of community and custodial sentences sentencing guideline, which was due to come into force on 1 April.
“The revised guideline states: ‘When considering a community or custodial sentence, the court must request and consider a pre-sentence report (PSR) before forming an opinion of the sentence’, and that a PSR ‘will normally be considered necessary if the offender belongs to one (or more) of the following cohorts’, which includes those ‘from an ethnic minority, cultural minority, and/ or faith minority community’.
“Justifying this change, the Sentencing Council said the quiet bit out loud, admitting its aim was to help address racial and other disparities in outcomes in the criminal-justice system. In other words, it moved from its dispassionate, impartial role of sentencing advice, based on judicial fairness, to a politicised attempt at manipulating sentencing outcomes to fix its perception of ‘institutional racism’.
“There was a huge backlash against this blatant racialising of criminal justice that would – in effect – mean that minority defendants would be far less likely to serve custodial sentences for the same offences. It shouldn’t surprise us that the public were horrified by proposals that were such a blatant slap across the face of impartial justice. Perhaps more surprisingly, however, one of the most vociferous critics of the guideline was the justice secretary, Shabana Mahmood. She was uncompromising when stating on X: ‘As someone who is from an ethnic minority background myself, I do not stand for any differential treatment before the law.’ She went on to vociferously oppose a ‘two-tier sentencing approach’.
“That mention of ‘two-tier’ justice from a government minister is important. After all, over the past year – specifically in the wake of the civil disturbances following the stabbings in Southport in 2024 – any mention of the phrase has been sneeringly dismissed as a far-right conspiracy theory. One article in the Guardian was titled ‘England riots: how has “two-tier policing” myth become widespread?’. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley described ideas of two-tier policing as ‘complete nonsense’. In April 2025, the Home Affairs Committee Inquiry into the 2024 riots doubled down, talking about ‘Unsubstantiated and “disgraceful” claims of “two-tier policing”’, which have ‘served only to undermine police officers’. Yet now, the government has been forced to introduce new emergency legislation – the Sentencing Guidelines (Pre-sentence Reports) Bill – precisely to ensure that two-tier justice doesn’t become embedded in the system.
“Hardeep Singh’s report is an invaluable record of why this all matters. It is rich in detail and doesn’t flinch from complexity and nuance. It’s important we understand this two-tier phenomenon beyond the phrase, which is fast becoming a meme-like cliché, either used as an insult to denote ‘far-right’ adjacent wrong-think or a short-cut slogan to signify distrust in the establishment.
“At its heart is the story of rot at the heart of criminal justice, and state institutions more generally. Under the guise of ‘diversity is our strength’, we are in danger of allowing police impartiality to be fatally compromised and a divisive, identitarian ideology to shatter the public’s belief in even the possibility of the state’s ability to treat everyone equally under the law.
“While reading Hardeep Singh’s substantial investigation into the underlying causes of the riots and the arguably one-sided responses from the police, the Crown Prosecution Service and media commentators to the riots in the summer of 2024, I could feel my blood pressure rising. Indeed, my blood was boiling at the injustice of it all, especially reading sections dealing with government blind spots in relation to, for example, the white working class versus the counter-protestors, or the differential custodial sentences doled out for some social-media posts, but not others. ‘Thank goodness this is being documented’, I reflected. In our rapidly changing world, with so much extraordinary news being created daily, it can be too easy to forget details. And we should not forget.
“But even more invaluably, the report helpfully creates a broader context. So much is covered: the ‘non-crime hate incident’ phenomenon; the Black Lives Matter and Edward Colston protests; the pro-Palestinian demonstrations since the 7 October attack by Hamas; and other examples of civil disorder, including at Manchester Airport, Harehills (Leeds) and the Notting Hill Carnival. It knits together a series of threads to reveal a fully formed garment that all policymakers, legislators, journalists and activists should read to help make sense of seemingly disparate phenomena.
“Inevitably, the issue of ‘grooming gangs’ features in the report. I write this foreword in the aftermath of a furore about Lucy Powell, Labour’s leader of the House of Commons, making controversial remarks during BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions? about a Channel 4 documentary, Groomed: A National Scandal, which detailed shocking accounts from victims of sexual exploitation. Powell’s retort, ‘Oh, we want to blow that little trumpet now, do we? Let’s get that dog whistle out, shall we?’ is likely to join the history book of infamy, alongside Gordon Brown’s ‘bigoted woman’ slur. Too often, identity politics are used to demonise opponents and shut down debate.
“This Powell incident reminded me of a recent exchange in parliament when Tory MP Katie Lam gave a harrowing account of one victim’s ordeal. She was then accused by other MPs of chasing headlines and privileging only one type of child abuse to stir up anti-Muslim tensions. Such uses of identitarian tropes – whether about race, ethnicity, religion or gender – to chill political debate is a scandal all democrats must confront. When I made a speech in response to the Inquiry into Telford Child Exploitation in the Lords some years ago, several of my fellow peers heckled ‘SHAME’. This was not aimed at the rapist perpetrators but at me, for daring to raise the issue.
“This report arms us all with details and arguments that should ensure readers will not be shamed into silence about the problems associated with the many tiers of British justice.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?
No.320: Ms. LINDA BOTHA of Durban
Linda Botha was the long-standing girlfriend of Paul Roper, and thereby a prominent member of “The Roper Set” (see August 2016 SCN) during the late 1970s. They split-up during the early 1980s however, and Paul Roper became extremely distraught for a while – before finding himself a string of new girlfriends! Linda Botha herself attended Durban Girls High School where, through their common surname (though they were not related in any way), she formed a close friendship with Lorna Botha (see April 2008 SCN). After school she enrolled at the Natal Technikon in order to study modern art (specialising in Dadaism), but worked part-time as a waitress at the Bell Inn, Durban North – and it was here where she evidently first met Paul Roper. A small, but still very attractive woman, it would be very interesting to learn what became of her.

A GREAT MAN REMEMBERED
Sir,
My dear husband John Redfern suffered from pulmonari fibrosis, and in the end was on oxygen 24/7, this in spite of never having smoked. I will always be grateful for John's and my 63 years together and that I was able to care for him at home to the end and that he passed away peacefully in his sleep.
I have settled well in Swakopmund Namibia with our youngest daughter and her husband.

CHANGE IN CLIMATE CHANGE CLIMATE
Sir,
The Global Climate Intelligence Group recently issued a report following their two day conference in Prague. These eminent climate scientists officially declared that "The Climate Emergency is at an End".
There has been very serious misinformation on the subjects of climate change and alternative/renewable energy since the creation of the IPCC in the late 1980's. Scientific reports since that time that have challenged the simplistic, but convenient, argument that "Global temperatures are increasing, there is an increase in violent weather, ocean levels are rising, glaciers are melting and polar bear numbers are in decline” are simply ignored by our political class and the mainstream media. These are complex subjects and not understood by those without an engineering or scientific background. However in a few countries, and the main one is Canada, a swathe of carbon and environmental taxes have been a Godsend to our various levels of government who have dramatically increased their levels of debt and run deficit budgets. ALL of those involved in politics, all journalists and environmentalists who preach on these subjects should be obliged to read this report from the Global Climate Intelligence Group, not difficult to track it down. Only a handful of countries out of the planet’s 195 have done anything at all/will do anything at all, to reduce their production of/consumption of fossil fuels. Even if levels of C02 released into the atmosphere were a contributor to climate change Canada contributes just 1.5% of all C02 and is an irrelevance.
Politicians and journalists have a duty/a responsibility to provide balanced and honest reporting on these subjects as the general public pay a very heavy price indeed, in terms of direct and indirect taxes, for the biased information/misinformation that has been presented since the late 1980's.
I have yet to meet a politician or mainstream journalist that preaches on these subjects but who has taken the trouble to do the research. Will the media here in Canada make any reference to this latest Global Climate Intelligence Group report? No prizes for guessing the answer to that one!

OBITUARY
IAN “MIGHTY MOUSE” McLAUCHLAN O.B.E.
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the recent death of Ian “Mighty Mouse” McLauchlan, the famed Scotland and British Lions loose-head prop forward.
Ian McLauchlan was born at Tarbolton in Ayrshire in 1943 and educated at Ayr Academy and Jordanhill College. He played his club rugby initially for Jordanhill, before moving to the West of Scotland club. He was however unusually small for a prop forward, being only 5 feet 8 inches tall, but this did not stop him dominating most opposing tight-heads, even those much larger than him – and this led to him acquiring the nickname of “Mighty Mouse”, a sobriquet which he bore with pride for the rest of his life!
He played the first of his 43 internationals for Scotland in 1969, eventually captaining the side on 19 occasions, a period which included Scotland’s shared Five Nations title in 1973. But it was as a valued British Lions player that “Mighty Mouse” achieved his greatest fame. He was surprisingly chosen for the 1971 Lions to New Zealand in spite of only being a regular in the Scotland side for a couple of years, and there being serious doubts about his short stature standing up to All Black pressure. These doubts were soon proved unfounded however, as he played in all four Tests against the All Blacks in the series where the Lions famously won by 2 games to 1 (with 1 drawn).
Ian McLauchlan was also selected for the historic British Lions tour of South Africa in 1974 (“the invincibles”), a tour which entailed considerable personal courage for those selected because of the pressure mounted against them by Leftist anti-South African elements, and threats made against their employment positions in the days when Rugby Union was still an amateur sport. He again played in all four Test matches against the Springboks during this tour (which the Lions of course won by 3 games to zero, with one draw), and became something of a cult-figure in the country, with SABC commentators invariably referring to him as “Mighty Mouse” rather than using his real name! This present writer was present in the main reception area of the Landdrost Hotel in Johannesburg when the victorious Lions team returned after winning the series with the drawn match at the old Ellis Park, and when Ian McLauchlan appeared at the entrance door – complete with a newly-acquired black-eye - there was a certain presence about him which conveyed to everyone around that this was a very special person!
After his playing days ended in 1979 “Mighty Mouse” was for a while involved in Scottish Rugby journalism, before becoming a highly-respected Rugby administrator in Scotland, serving on the SRFU Board from 2010 until 2019 and being President of the SRFU between 2010 and 2012. Our sincere condolences are extended to his family at this sad time.
