The Rugby world was shocked and bemused recently when Brendan Venter, the former Springbok centre three-quarters, and at the time the manager of Saracens RFC, gave a most bizarre and childish interview to Sky TV after his side's 21-24 defeat to Racing Metro in the Heineken Cup.
Venter's infantile performance was most certainly not what one would expect from a leading sporting official - certainly not from someone who is a fully qualified medical doctor, as Venter is. The idea of past South African rugby officials and administrators such as Dr. Danie Craven or Corrie Bornman behaving in such a foolish and embarrassing manner simply can't be imagined.
But was Venter himself to blame for this insult to the Sky viewers? It should not be forgotten that he was one of the first products of the "new" South Africa
Brendan Venter's woeful interview was therefore simply a classic concrete example of the rapid and radical decline of standards in South Africa

FUTURE SPRINGBOK CLUB EVENTS
A full itinerary of functions and meetings for early 2011 will be discussed and decided upon at the forthcoming AGM. The following two events have however already been planned.
During early Spring 2011 the Springbok Club will be staging a trip to Hatfield House in Hertfordshire in order to pay respects at the RLI "Troopie" Statue which is now situated there, as well as touring Hatfield House.
In April 2011 the Springbok Club will be holding a full day's events to celebrate Van Riebeeck's Day, which it is hoped will include a braai and a special video presentation by someone closely associated with the "South Africa Sucks" web-site.

REPORT FROM THE ZIMBABWE
We have recently received the following report from Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. Although extremely harrowing in places, this report is even so not without hope, and we believe that the more publicity given to the excellent work of the ZCTF the better:-
"It is now 10 years since the implementation of the Land Reform Programme and the very few game farms we have left, are still being invaded.
"I recently paid a visit to Denlynian and Tamari Wildlife Farm in the Beit Bridge
"The invaders have spent the past 10 years vandalising the properties and slaughtering the wildlife which was previously quite abundant. They have been especially targeting zebra and eland. The eland population has dropped from 973 to 374 - a loss of 560 animals and the zebra population has fallen from 871 to 163 - a loss of 708 animals. The invaders have slaughtered 300 zebra for their skins in the past 2 months alone.
"The owners of the properties checked with the Deeds Registry and found that there is no such organization as the Zhove Conservancy Co-operative registered. They took legal action against the invaders and the courts ruled that the invaders be evicted but this has been ignored and the police are reluctant to assist.
"In addition to the decimation of the wildlife, the invaders have also burnt approximately 200 hectares of trees, most of which have been standing for the past 300 years. No Environmental Impact Assessment was carried out and they are creating an ecological disaster. The game farms are situated in a low rainfall area which is only suitable for wildlife and the ecosystem there is now so fragile that if the land is tilled, the soil will end up in the river.
"7km of 16 strand game fencing has been stolen to make wire snares - making a total of 112 km of wire. All that remains of the game fencing are the bare poles.
"Thanks to the donations we received of M99, a wire snare was removed from a buffalo bull on Dett Vlei recently. Esther van der Meer of Painted Dog Conservation was alerted to the fact that a buffalo bull was wandering around with a copper wire snare around its neck. Esther, with the assistance of her husband and Peter Blinston darted the animal and successfully removed the snare.
"Ten elephants were burned to death during a bush fire at Derbyshire Ranch in Shangani, Matabeleland South Province Zimbabwe
"Three weeks ago, 13 elephants were killed by a gang of poachers in the Hurungwe Safari area. National Parks have recovered 8 of the tuskless carcasses and are still searching for the remaining five.
"On the 10th September, Hurungwe and Guruve Police arrested the gang of 9 poachers after they tried to evade the police at a road block. Upon searching their vehicle, the police found 25 tusks, elephant tails, an unlicensed rifle and machetes. In March, 10 elephant carcasses were found in Gonarezhou National Park
"7 suspected rhino poachers were arrested in the Chiredzi area recently and a 303 rifle fitted with a silencer, telescopic sight and a carbine was recovered. The suspects consisted of 3 South Africans and 4 Zimbabweans. The latest poaching activities in the Save Valley Conservancy resulted in the death of a rhino, leaving its calf badly wounded by gunshots. National Parks have deployed a team that is currently on high alert following the heightened poaching activities.

"South Africa 1 October 2010 in protest at the unlawful handling off into detention of the five youngsters among us. On Wednesday last, the High Court saw fit to condone the trampling on people’s rights, the storming into houses without warrant, the stealing of money and watches without giving receipts, and the hauling of people off into detention without properly arresting them, typical of the 'Oh-so-democratic' and 'Oh-so-full-of-human-rights'.

DIRTY TRICKS
As many readers and supporters may be aware, our movement has recently been subjected to a number of orchestrated attacks from sources which can only be speculated upon.
Firstly our main computer was hit by a vicious targeted virus attack, and then a leading official of our organisation was arrested on a spurious charge - though thankfully speedily released once the Police ascertained that there was absolutely no evidence. The most serious and worrying facet of this orchestrated onslaught against our movement, however, came when a vile and evil smear campaign was mounted against the editor of the SCN on the Internet.
This despicable smear campaign started when two obscene and defamatory blog-spots were created (happily both removed within hours of them first appearing) featuring outrageous lies about the editor and a number of disgusting pictures of a headless (significantly) naked male body in various perverted poses - which the deranged creator or creators of this sick site claimed were photos of the editor. As the headless male in these obscene photos was quite clearly much thinner than the editor, and as they did not feature a number of tell-tale marks on his lower body, these distasteful pictures can therefore be PROVED to be of a different person (the only "evidence" being that the pornographic pictures were juxtapositioned with a number of genuine head-and-shoulders photos of the editor quite clearly in a different venue, some of which were apparently doctored using - we understand - PhotoShop computer graphics software). As if this wasn't despicable enough the instigator or instigators of this evil smear then managed to "hack" into our computer and sent copies of their lies and degenerate fake pictures to our address list. Happily it would seem that good anti-spam and anti-pornography software prevented most of these disgusting postings reaching their destinations, and those which did were overwhelmingly dismissed with the contempt that they deserved. So far "over the top" indeed was this demented smear campaign that nobody with more than two brain-cells to rub together could surely take all the ridiculous lies and fabricated pictures seriously.
Quite clearly those responsible for constructing these perverted images not only have depraved minds, but indeed diseased minds, and must be put a stop to before they can enact similar libels against other innocent people. The whole distressing matter is now of course in the hands of the Police, who have advised us not to comment any further about our suspicions of who is responsible. We would however like to give our most sincere thanks to all our many supporters from around the world who have shown us complete support and solidarity during this most traumatic episode, and who have clearly realised the diabolical nature of these false claims. We would also like to ask all supporters to alert us immediately if these fake pictures appear anywhere else in future, and also to let us know if they have any evidence or suspicions about who was responsible in concocting these falsehoods, which we will then pass onto the Police.
