It was perhaps unsurprising that the election of a non-Unionist majority onto Belfast City Council (and for this analysis we regard the pathetic Alliance Party as being non-Unionist) would result in the cessation of the regular flying of the Union Flag over Belfast City Hall. What has however been surprising – and indeed most encouraging – has been the forthright reaction of so many Loyalists in Belfast to this vile insult against their nation and identity.

We say surprising in this regard because prior to this latest attack on Ulster’s Britishness the Unionist population of Northern Ireland seemed to have been cowered into inaction, as one concession after another was made to the Nationalist neanderthals. Indeed the very fact that the Nationalists and their Alliance Party poodles currently hold a majority on Belfast City Council has undoubtedly been due to this inaction. In spite of the fact that there is still (and in all probability always will be) a clear majority of Unionists living in Belfast, at recent elections apathy seems to have taken hold, reducing the turnout in Loyalist areas accordingly – with the most reprehensible mindset being refusals to vote because none of he Unionist parties were fully 100% to one’s way of thinking (a regrettable way of thinking which was also unfortunately adopted by so many White South Africans, which of course was a major contributory factor to the loss of their country).

Let us hope that the flag insult issue acts as a “wake-up call” to all Ulster Loyalists therefore, so that they will be re-motivated to ensure that never again do those whose loyalty is to a foreign country manage to gain control of that beautiful British city of Belfast. Let us hope also that at the next elections the absurd Alliance Party can be consigned to the dustbin of history.

But what has caused this sudden reawakening of patriotic sentiment in Ulster? Can it be, as we suspect, as a result of the patriotic sentiment which swept across the entire United Kingdom following the triumphs of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics? One significant manifestation of the Olympic euphoria which has been observed by both friends and foes alike was the far wider adoption of the Union Flag throughout the United Kingdom, with regional flags accordingly losing their appeal – in England in particular. As we observed in the August 2012 edition of the SCN following the Olympics “We have surely witnessed a great nation being re-born”. It would seem therefore that these recent forthright actions in Belfast demanding the continuous flying of the Union Flag over the City Hall have been yet a further sign of this re-birth.

Patriots throughout the UK – and indeed around the pan-British world – have of course taken great pride and inspiration from the pro-Union Flag actions taking place in Belfast. Our solidarity with our Ulster Loyalist brothers and sisters is not only because of our mutual love of the Union Flag however. It is because their cause is just – AND MUST PREVAIL!

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS

Alas a combination of both inclement weather and the economic downturn meant that the turnout at the Springbok Club’s December gathering was rather disappointing. Those who did attend still enjoyed a most convivial and memorable evening however!

The 2013 Annual General Meeting of the Springbok Club will take place on Wednesday 30th January 2013, commencing at 19.00 hrs. (All members will be informed of the precise details in due course, but if any current non-member wishes to attend please inform us so that we can notify you of the venue.)

You are reminded that all fully paid-up members of the Springbok Club are entitled to participate at this meeting, though only Honorary, Life and Full members will be allowed to vote or to stand for office. Non-members will however be allowed to attend, but not to participate in discussions. The agenda will be as follows :-

1) Organiser’s report for 2012.

2) Treasurer’s report for 2012.

3) Branch Development report for 2012.

4) Election of officers to the Executive Committee and other appointments for 2013.

5) Motions for debate (if any).

6) Any other business.

All nominations for office and motions for debate must be proposed and seconded by Honorary, Life or fully paid-up Full members of the Springbok Club, and must be submitted in writing or by e-mail to the current Executive Committee prior to the meeting.

Following the business side of the meeting Mr. Gary Vincent will be giving another of his highly popular illustrated “war gaming” talks. Members will probably recall that last year his talk was about Private George Comberton who fought at the Battle of Rorke’s Drift. This year he will be giving a follow-up talk about the build-up and origins of the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, which took place on 22nd/23rd January 1879, with special emphasis on the fighting around the hospital.

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club will be holding a pub-gathering during the afternoon of Saturday 23rd February in Canterbury. It is also anticipated the Hampshire Branch of the Springbok Club will be holding a re-launch meeting during early 2013

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

In December the Swinton Circle joined forces with New Britain in order to participate in the annual Falkland Islands Association Battle Day commemorations. This proved to be a most moving and inspiring event, commencing with a solemn ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall which was attended, among others, by Ms. Sukie Cameron (the Falkland Islands Government Representative in the UK) and Peter Pepper of the Falkland Islands Associations. After this ceremony coaches took those attending to the Union Jack Club near London Bridge Station, where an enjoyable reception and luncheon was held.

On 26^th January 2013 the Swinton Circle will again be joining forces with New Britain in order to take part in their annual Australia Day ceremony at the bust of Admiral Arthur Phillip at the rear of St. Paul’s Cathedral, and on 6^th February will be supporting New Britain’s New Zealand Day celebrations in London. Fuller details about both these events are included in the “New Britain News” column.

During March, April and May 2013 the Swinton Circle will be addressed by a prominent DUP MP, a hereditary peer of the realm and a leading newspaper columnist. Later during the year the organisation will welcome as guest speakers a current UKIP MEP, a leading national security expert and a former prominent Conservative MP.

NEW BRITAIN NEWS

New Britain will be staging their annual London celebration of Australia Day shortly, the precise details of which are as follows :-

Date : Saturday 26th January 2013

Time : 14.00 hrs (assemble from 13.30 hrs onwards)

Venue : The statue of Admiral Arthur Phillip (the first Governor of Australia, and founder of Sydney) in Watling Street, immediately to the rear of St.Paul's Cathedral.

At this event wreaths will be laid (including one from the Swinton Circle) and the Australian National Anthem will be sung, and other participating organisations will be the Freedom Association and the Royal Society of St.George. After the ceremony the Band of the Cinque Ports Corps of Drums will lead a procession through the streets of the City of London to the Church of St.Sepulchre (which is opposite the Old Bailey). A reception will then be held at 15.00 hrs in the Henry Wood Room of the church, at which the guest speaker will be Mr. Rory Bloomfield, Deputy Director of the Freedom Association. Messages will be read out from the High Commissioner of Australia and Alderman Sir Michael Savory, Chairman of the Admiral Arthur Phillip Memorial Trust. All present will then be invited to sign a special message of solidarity with the people of Australia which will be sent to the Prime Minister of Australia. During the evening the Swinton Circle will be staging an informal convivial gathering at a near-by hostelry with special Australian connections.

New Britain will also be staging a London celebration of New Zealand Day next month, and the Swinton Circle has again been asked to participate. The precise details are as follows :-

Date :  Wednesday 6^th February

Time :  12.00 noon (assemble from 11.30 hrs onwards)

Venue : The statue of Captain James Cook in the Mall (the Trafalgar Square end)

Wreaths will be laid will be laid at the statue, following which a lunch will be held at the Crypt Restaurant of near-by St.Martin in the Fields. At 19.00 hrs a New Zealand Reception will be staged in the Henry Wood Room of St.Sepulchre Church, where the New Zealand National Anthem will be sung and a message read from the New Zealand High Commissioner. There will also be a talk about Captain James Cook given by Ms. Julia Rae, the Secretary of the Stepney Historical Trust and author of a book on Captain James Cook’s endeavours. Although born in Yorkshire, Capt. Cook lived for much of his life at Shadwell near Stepney in east London. At the conclusion of the Reception all present will be invited to sign a special message of solidarity which will be sent to the Prime Minister of New Zealand.

APPEAL FROM THE SANWILD WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

We have recently received the following appeal from Louise Joubert of the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary :-

Two weeks ago SanWild launched a project to try to secure two young rhinos offered up for sale at a live game auction in South Africa. In recent weeks a growing number of live rhinos were exported to Vietnam; a country with no animal welfare legislation, where the abuse and exploitation of wild animals have been going on for a pretty long time.

Information received indicated that more rhinos were destined for export. Even young animals only a couple of months old are targeted by animal traders and those who speculate with live rhinos as an investment.

One young calf in particular caused us great concern as she is only 8 months old and still totally dependent on her human care-givers.

Unfortunately our efforts to secure her during a live auction failed and she was purchased by an animal trader.

Our efforts to secure a second young rhino was successful however, with the help of an international NGO. We are extremely happy to report that young Robbie will be moved to SanWild as soon as a boma has been completed.

We are making the final arrangements for the relocation as well as the fitting of a radio transmitter to keep track of Robbie’s movements after his release. To ensure his successful release back to the wild it will be essential for this young rhino to go into a holding boma until he has settled down and have adjusted fully to his new surroundings. We also need to gradually integrate him over a period of time with others of his kind to ensure he is accepted and can join into a social grouping.

THE QUARTERLY REVIEW

We have recently been informed that unfortunately the Conservative magazine The Quarterly Review is ceasing publication in printed form, and in future will only be available in downloadable on-line format because of escalating costs.

The Quarterly Review, which is edited by our very good colleague Derek Turner, has often been criticised for being too intellectual for most potential readers, and it would seem that its failure to become economically viable in standard format confirms that there is probably much truth in this observation. DEATH OF A NATION

Sir,

My grandfather left the UK during the mid 1800's to start a new life in South Africa, and started several businesses in Vrede, O.F.S. I felt that I had just as much right to live in the country as any other nation. Alas all is lost. At my age I give up, and accept my loss: my country, my house (which I sold for R135,000 ten years ago at Port Shepstone), the 25 years we spent working in institutions without a salary, living on donations and bringing up four children. Sorry if I sound bitter, but I feel all alone. Two children live in the UK, one in Holland and one in New Zealand. Of the 25 years I lived among Black people in Hamanskraal ten years were at a hospital, where I was told by a Black doctor that one day I would be used as fertilizer. I can still remember his name.

Keep up the good work, because there are not too many around who have the guts to stand up for what is right.

I’ve just read of the genocide of Whites in South Africa. This is a situation that is not acceptable in any place on earth.

Does any one know if voluntary immigration to the U.K. or the United States is difficult for Whites in South Africa?

I know here in the U.S. an immigrant can be awarded a permanent visa if one’s life is in danger upon returning home to one’s country. Of course, the US Immigration Service at present is probably not very open for Whites, but for Kenyans and any other minority it is a different story.

ROGUES GALLERY

Recently a few of our supporters encountered a most disturbing experience on a Conservative web-forum where they are contributors. The main instigator of these problems went under the surreal name of Criostoir O'Domhnallain, though it subsequently came to light that his real name was Chris Donnellan, and that he came from Santa Rosa in California.

This character started attacking all and sundry on this forum seemingly for no logical reason whatsoever, and propagated views which seemed the exact antithesis of the basic ideological stance of the forum. In particular he displayed a pathological hatred of all things British or associated in any way with the British Empire/Commonwealth – something which perhaps wasn’t surprising given the Gaelicisation of his name, and as a result, as he was evidently a fanatical Irish Nationalist separatist living in the United States, he gained the inevitable nickname of “the plastic paddy”.

After some on-line investigations by one member of the forum it was revealed that he was a well-known and notorious agent provocateur (or a “troll”, to use the Internet slang) on several other similar web-forums, and eventually he was barred from the Conservative web-forum in question – but alas only after he had managed to generate a considerable amount of conflict and ill-feeling.

There were two very mysterious, and indeed sinister, factors concerning this trouble-maker however. Firstly he had evidently purchased copies of S.A.Patriot in the past, but then openly criticised the publication quite vehemently – not only objecting to its previous “Odal Rune” logo and sub-title of “The Voice of the White Worker” without giving reason, but also condemning the magazine for attacking the sell-out South African Nationalist government. The big question therefore remains why he ever wished to purchase copies of a publication whose aims and opinions he evidently disagreed with so diametrically – unless, that is, that he had a long-term devious motivation for so doing?

Secondly he revealed that he had been a close confidant of another trouble-maker who has caused us great problems in the past, namely the notorious Mark Cotterill (see the “Rogues Gallery” column of the June 2011 edition of the SCN). Cotterill of course spent several years in the United States during the late 1990s and early 2000s after fleeing the UK following a disputed physical assault in Torquay where he was then living, so a previous link-up between these two sinister characters is therefore very possible. But one significant enigma remains. Cotterill always claimed to be staunchly pro-Ulster Loyalist, whereas O'Domhnallain/Donnellan portrayed himself as a fanatical Irish Nationalist.

Needless to say, we warn all readers against having any contact with the O'Domhnallain/Donnellan character – but we also wonder whether anybody else knows anything further about this sinister figure, and in particular anything about his relationship with Cotterill.

OBITUARY

SIR PATRICK MOORE

Like millions of other people around the globe, we were greatly saddened to learn of the death of the renowned astronomer and broadcaster Sir Patrick Moore. Sir Patrick was not only a leading expert in his chosen scientific sphere of astronomy, but was also a skilled broadcaster and communicator who was able to relay the most complex astronomical facts and discoveries to the layman in easily understandable language. In short he was a genius, of the type which the British nation is proud to produce in abundance.

But there was far more to Sir Patrick Moore than just his scientific and broadcasting genius. He was a very rounded person – a Renaissance Man of the Twentieth Century. He had a strong if somewhat underplayed Christian faith, a belief in God based upon scientific knowledge. He was a skilled musician, composing many works including operas, and also a skilled xylophone player. He was a keen (albeit not very proficient) Cricketer and Golfer. He was a great animal lover who campaigned tirelessly for the banning of the cruel practice of fox hunting. But perhaps his most well-known and loved attribute away from his astronomical expertise was his sense of humour and love of self-lampooning on television light-entertainment programmes.

Most importantly, however, Sir Patrick Moore was a great patriot. He volunteered for service in the RAF during WWII in spite of exaggerating his age and not divulging his poor health record. It was during WWII that he lost his fiancée during a German bombing raid, and remained loyal to her memory for the rest of his life by never marrying. This tragedy also engendered an abhorrence for all forms of Germanism, a loathing which was reinforced by a study of the part played by the German hierarchy in so many of the Twentieth Century’s demonic events. During the mid-1970s he toyed with the idea of joining the National Party of the United Kingdom (NPUK – see S.A.Patriot-in-Exile No.37), but after the demise of this party he joined one of the small breakaway patriotic parties called the Country Party. Towards the end of his life, however, he joined UKIP, and dismayed many of his broadcasting colleagues by his open acknowledgement of his membership and support.

All the time that the British nation can produce men of such rounded genius as Sir Patrick Moore then it has nothing to worry about for the future. Alas Sir Patrick Moore’s decision not to marry means that he has left no close family, but our condolences are extended to his protégé and heir apparent as presented of The Sky at Night Prof. Chris Lintott, his colleague and fellow astronomer, musician and animal-lover Brian May, and – if only he could understand – his pet cat Ptolemy.

The re-election of Barack Hussein Obama as President of the United States was as dumbfounding as it was terrifying. As we emphasized in the October edition of the SCN, this could well signal an acceleration of the de-Westernisation of the United States – and furthermore a surrender in the War against Terror, increased kow-towing to China and the Islamic world, and further betrayal of Israel. For other countries throughout the West the prospects seem frightening in the extreme.

There seems no rational explanation for this astonishing act of potential national suicide taken by the American electorate. Much has been made of recent rapid changes in the demographic nature of the United States, but the fact remains that even if the most doom-laden estimates of the ethnic composition of the US electorate are true (though of course most of these are undoubtedly wild exaggerations designed to spread pessimism and defeatism among White Americans), over 70% of the American population still remains of European (mainly British) ethnic stock. Furthermore, some of the most decisive votes in favour of Obama occurred in the New England states, where the percentage of non-White voters is the lowest. The much-vaunted “demographic time-bomb” in the United States clearly still hasn’t occurred therefore – though this is no reason for comfort, for even if the over-exaggerated doom-predictions are ignored there still remains a distinct possibility that non-Whites could outnumber Whites in the United States before the end of the century.

Obama’s second term in office will undoubtedly prove to be even worse than his first as far as traditional America and the West in general are concerned, but it is very doubtful whether he will be able to destroy the fabric of American society and Western hegemony completely – after all the GOP still controls the House, as well as most State legislatures.

At the 2016 Presidential elections it is highly likely that Joe Biden will be chosen as the Donkey Party’s nomination, but appalling though this prospect appears he will undoubtedly not be able to galvanise Blacks and Latinos to vote in the same numbers as Obama has been able to do. If a charismatic GOP candidate can emerge who wins the support of the vast majority of White electors (as well as those non-Whites who realize which side of their bread is best buttered on) then he or she could sweep to power in 2016.

But simply re-gaining the White House will not be sufficient for the GOP. They must realize that a “demographic time-bomb” – although clearly over-exaggerated by their opponents – does still exist. One of the first actions of the next GOP President must therefore be not only to halt all further non-White immigration into the US, but also to initiate some sort of effective repatriation policy. His or her appeal to the electorate must therefore emphasise their British/European roots in much the same way as Obama has taken advantage of his African roots. This could well prove to be the last chance for the GOP to save America as a Western nation – and we’re not being over-melodramatic.

SPRINGBOK CLUB NEWS

The Springbok Club’s UDI Day Dinner last month proved to be a good success. The guest speaker was Mr. Michael Thorburn, whose parents settled in the then Nyasaland shortly after WWI, before moving to the then Southern Rhodesia where he was brought up, educated, and spent most of working life. In his well-received speech Mr. Thorburn recalled not only his own childhood, working career and military and BSAP Reserve service in Rhodesia, but also told something about his involvement with the annual Ceremony of the Hoisting of the Flag event in Norfolk, which commemorates and re-enacts the foundation of Rhodesia on the 13^th September 1890. The venue where this event took place proved excellent, with the dinner being of the highest standard, and a happy and inspirational atmosphere being enjoyed by all who attended. It was furthermore provisionally arranged that a Springbok Club party would be participating in next year’s Ceremony of the Hoisting of the Flag commemoration in Norfolk.

In December it is still hoped that the Springbok Club will be organising a function to commemorate the Day of the Vow. Full details will be circulated to all members once full details have been finalised. In January the Springbok Club will be holding its 2013 AGM, and during spring the organisation will be visiting the gardens of a prominent ex-Rhodesian in the South of England.

SWINTON CIRCLE NEWS

In November the Swinton Circle held a special meeting which was addressed by Mr. Roger Knapman, the former Conservative MP for Stroud, UKIP leader, and UKIP MEP for the South-West of England (Wessex and Cornwall). Mr. Knapman’s speech proved masterful, and told of encouraging developments which were currently taking place within the broader EuroSceptic movement.

In December the Swinton Circle will be joining forces with New Britain in order to participate in the annual Falklands Islands Association Battle Day ceremony. This will take place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Saturday 8^th December. Start assembling at 10.30 hrs ready for the ceremony itself to begin at 11.00 hrs. We hope that as many Swinton Circle and New Britain members and supporters as possible will be able to attend this important event to express solidarity with our Falklands Islands kith and kin.

On Saturday 26^th  January 2013 the Swinton Circle will again be joining forces with New Britain in order to take part in their annual Australia Day ceremony at the bust of Admiral Arthur Phillip at the rear of St. Paul’s Cathedral.

In February, March and April 2013 the Swinton Circle will be addressed by a prominent DUP MP, a hereditary peer of the realm and a leading newspaper columnist. Later during the year the organisation will welcome as guest speakers a current UKIP MEP, a leading national security expert and a former prominent Conservative MP.

As mentioned above, New Britain will be participating in a ceremony to commemorate Falkland Islands Battle Day at the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Saturday 8^th December, and on Saturday 26^th January 2013 will be staging an event to celebrate Australia Day at the statue of Admiral Arthur Phillip (founder and first governor of New South Wales) behind St.Paul’s Cathedral, commencing at 14.00 hrs.

APPEAL FOR SUPPORT IN CAMPAIGN TO END WHALING

We have recently received the following important appeal for support in the campaign to end commercial whaling from Mr. Fred O’Regan of the International Fund for Animal Welfare :-

”Last year, Japan convinced fellow pro-whaling countries to walk out of the meeting. This was after the adoption of measures aimed at banning Japan's practice of 'vote-buying' at the IWC - the payment of cash to countries in exchange for their pro-whaling votes.

”In less than a week, the IWC is set to meet again, this time in Panama. Will real progress be made for whale conservation, or will Japan sabotage the meeting once again by leading a walkout? You can be the first to know.

”IFAW is sending a delegation to Panama to urge countries to protect whales and their habitats. They will be sending updates from the meeting, and here's how you can stay up to date with the news:

THE DEAFENING SILENCE

The following poignant reminder of Rhodesia’s 9/11 moments was recently circulated by Mr. Alf Hutchison of Obadiahoutreach (www.obadiahoutreach.org). We re-circulate it below with Mr. Hutchison’s permission :-

A somber message to all who claim to be Christians in this evil world

America experienced their 9/11, and the entire world stood aghast. Rhodesia experienced TWO such vile Marxist terrorist tragedies and the world said NOTHING…! Did America condemn these murders? ...NO.  Did the United Kingdom and the Queen condemn these heinous atrocities? ….No.   Surely the UN condemned this most foul Marxist act of absolute cowardice?... No they said NOTHING.

It was on the last leg from Kariba to Salisbury on the 3rd of September 1978 that Air Rhodesia Flight RH825 sent a Mayday call. The aircraft the ‘Viscount Hunyani’ with fifty two passengers and four crew members on board was hit by a heat seeking Sam 7 missile. It had been fired by ZIPRA terrorists. 18 survived the crash, but later the callous murderers shot and bayoneted 10 of them, one man, seven women and two young female children. Only 8 survived to tell of the horror they had witnessed. The second shooting down of a passenger aircraft was the ‘Viscount Umniati’- with 59 passengers on board, on 12^th February 1979. There were NO SURVIVORS in the crash-landing.

Altogether 107 people were brutally murdered, and still NOT ONE WORD OF CONDEMNATION. Like the Parable of the Good Samaritan…they all looked the other way and passed by. 

My wish from you the reader is simple… be a Good Samaritan. PLEASE pass this on to all on your address book; because on Sunday 2^nd September 2012 a beautiful memorial was dedicated to all those who tragically lost their lives. The memorial is in the grounds of the Voortrekkers Monument in Pretoria South Africa. Please show that you at least care that two civilian planes, the Hunyani and the Umniati, were first used as a cowardly means of reprisal, and in fact was the precursor to America’s 9/11.

Keith Nell, who was an SAS operative at the time, has written one of the most amazing classics  ever to come out of the African continent, ‘Viscount Down’… of how one brave soldier controlled the demise of the perpetrators of this most foul and evil deed.   

I have tried in my humble way to honor those killed in three poems, somehow the tragedy is made more poignant, but one thing is sure …We will remember them no matter what…

LEST WE FORGET HUNYANI

He lay in hiding like a snake in the grass,

Black mamba, deadly, loathsome and crass,

Waiting in ambush, his expression quite bland;

 Russian Sam seven clutched tight in his hand.

Kariba’s Air Rhodesia, flight eight-two-five,

Eight surviving adults now fell dead to the floor,

Butchered by savages all thirsting for gore.

“For stealing our land” one Black comrade said,

“We shall not stop killing, until all Whites are dead”

To the memory of passengers, pilot and crew,

To the survivors who battled to start life a new,

Upon all brave Rhodesians may the sun never set.

Rhodesia… birthplace of my heart and my soul,

Its destruction was ZIPRA’s ultimate goal;

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

No.169:  Mr. RON STEPHENSON of Pietermaritzburg.

Although he was already a pensioner when we first made contact with him during the early 1980s, Ron Stephenson was very active with the patriotic movement in Pietermaritzburg, and indeed stood as HNP candidate for Pietermariztzburg North at the 1987 General Election (thus giving the lie to the belief that the HNP was an Afrikaner-only party). The scion of an old Natal family, Ron Stephenson was a qualified lawyer and a keen tennis player, and represented South Africa at a World Anti-Communist League conference in Korea. In view of his age and the elapse of time it seems highly unlikely that he is still with us, but even so it would be most interesting to learn what became of him.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

BENEATH CONTEMPT

Sir,

We should not have talked with terrorists in Northern Ireland. We should have destroyed the IRA in all-out war and fully integrated NI into the UK. If all IRA men had been either shot, executed, or  jailed for decades, that would have brought peace and justice to Northern Ireland. Instead, the authorities turn a blind eye to terrorist rule in some areas.

Which leads me to Peter Hain's "honourable" record. A record of persecution, harassment and bullying of South African sportsmen, helping to ruin their careers. An arrogant bully whose "Don't Play With Apartheid"  was one of the few books to have made me foam at the mouth. One of the people who helped bring Mugabe to power in the first place and one of the many who owed Ian Smith an apology. That he supports sanctions on Zimbabwe does at least show some hope for him -perhaps he, like Helen Suzman, Garfield and Judy Todd, R.W.Johnson and Alan Paton's widow, is a sinner who gradually repenteth?

OLYMPIC FLAME OF FREEDOM

Sir,

Yes that was a surprise!! People in Britain don't really understand what enormous followings world-wide Brits like Beckham and Rowan enjoy!

The Olympic Opening Ceremony was partly spectacular, but had strong strands of the parochial left. The assumption that the industrial revolution was oppressive instead of the truth - that it emancipated us all and especially the ex-rural workers who suffered heavy labour in cold, rain and heat but then had by comparison much less strenuous mechanised lives! Obviously the pseudo-intellectual left have never worked on a farm (as Rowan and I did when we were young!)

The left never understand internationalism and the wealth which arises from free trade among free peoples and cultures. That is Britain's greatest achievement. Their aim is supranational where peoples and cultures are subsumed (as they were in this ceremony) into a "levelling" Statist mish-mash which inevitably leads to failure and conflict - as it did in the Soviet Union and is doing in the European Union!! (I once wrote an article on "Bean Blackadder and the European Union"!)

But of course this ceremony was a spectacular start to the opposite - individual achievement of the highest order by disciplined athletes representing nations and their cultures.

PSEUDS CORNER

In the September edition of the SCN we reported in our “Rogues Gallery” column about a mysterious character who gloried in the name of Ryan Marcovich who had been posting some offensive and indeed potentially libelous allegations about us on FaceBook. Subsequent to this we received a most bizarre and incomprehensible message, apparently from Mr. Marcovich, which read as follows :-

OBITUARIES

SIR REX HUNT

Sir Rex Hunt, who died last month, was the Governor of the Falkland Islands at the time of the Argentine invasion of the Islands in 1982. He had earlier enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic career, serving in Uganda, Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. He was considered a “safe pair of hands” when appointed Governor of the Falkland Islands in 1980, and was expected to follow the dictates of liberal Foreign and Commonwealth Office policy in seeking compromise and appeasement with Argentina regarding their illegal claim on the Islands. The liberal Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials didn’t know their man however, for once installed as Governor he saw it as his first duty to support his Falkland Islands kith and kin in their rights to protect their British identity. Once the Argentine invasion took place his courage and defiance acted as an inspiration to Margaret Thatcher’s Government (which at that time included the “wet” Lord Carrington as Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary) to stand firm against the Argentine invasion and to dispatch the Naval Task Force to rescue the Islanders. Although forced to surrender personally by the Argentine thugs, Sir Rex Hunt defiantly left the Islands wearing his full ceremonial Governor’s uniform – cocked hat, ostrich feathers and all!  More than anything else this act of defiance raised determination among both the Falkland Islanders themselves and Britons in the UK to resist. After the triumph of the British forces in driving out the Argentine invaders Sir Rex Hunt was briefly re-installed as Governor, but alas after a few short years he was replaced for no justifiable reason. He was then festooned with honours, and wrote a highly-acclaimed book about his tenure of office, “My Falkland Days”. There are those who claim that Sir Rex Hunt was the last of a bygone age of British Imperialism. He was not. He was the first of a new age of renewed British confidence and power, which is already bearing fruit during the early years of the 21^st Century (witness the 2012 London Olympic Games!). He will act as a great inspiration to all British Imperial patriots for decades ahead. Sir Rex is survived by his widow, son and daughter. Our condolences are extended to them all – but also our thanks for a man who has given us such renewed strength and vision.

VALERIE TOMLINSON

Valerie Isobel Southwell Tomlinson (née Barton) died at Fish Hoek, South Africa, on 12^th  August 2012, aged 94. Among her many achievements, Val played golf for Rhodesia, represented Cape Province in bowls, became secretary of the Women's Institute, and was exceptionally knowledgeable about all types of plants. She was also a published writer and was the author of a book on Fuchsias in Rhodesia, as well as being a gifted artist. She was married to the well-known Rhodesian and Springbok cricketer, Denis Tomlinson, son of Colonel A.J. Tomlinson, a former Commissioner of the BSAP and Commander of the Rhodesian Native Regiment in East Africa during the First World War. Val was a staunch member of the Cape Peninsula Branch of the Flame Lily Association. She is survived by her daughters, Anne and Patricia, to whom our sincerest condolences are extended.
